A lot of the problem is so much sports media is sycophantic. The beat writers can’t help but write things line “the $100 million hitter struck out”, but everyone else in the sports media/blogosphere arena wants to have their connections to the people who make decisions. It’s nothing new, but the austerity porn of the aughts led everybody to praise cost cutting as a concept. It’s a lot like the baseline of the press presenting church goers as automatically good. Spending less is better. Paying players less is by default better than paying more. The criticism of overpaid players vastly outweighs the criticism of overpaid owners. the owner class has done a good job of melting the brains of fans, it’s not much different than other aspects of the entertainment industry. -

It’s so depressing talking about spending floors for the bears and Blackhawks. We should be talking about ceilings and ways to finagle the cap instead of collectively bargained mandated spending levels not yet reached -

What the hell are you talking about? Getting fired in the middle of your 4th consecutive lackluster season is hardly unique to any sport.

I was thinking that may have been the case but they were already in the free fall when that move happened. It may have been the substitute URL that destroyed this team

Jed is signed through 2025. Presumably they won’t fire him until at least after 2024 so they aren’t double dipping on a presidential salary. They could even let him work through his contract. But if they tumble my guess is they’d put limitations on what Hoyer can do, so as to not handicap his inevitable replacement. Hard lines drawn on the cap, limits on years offered to free agents. If 2025 starts out good and they end up contending, he might get a short extension, otherwise they’ll start looking for his replacement in the middle of that season.

I know I'm generally more of a pessimist than some, but come on guys, Hendricks is hanging by a thread. It would be nice to get 10 not terrible starts out of him this year. Then let him go.

I still think they do something with those picks other than make all 5 selections. But you can make a case that the organization has plenty of space for all those guys

Beat writers have speculated that Jones is in line for the gig. In theory it makes sense that he would be for the next 2-3 years. But eventually he won’t be the obvious choice and stripping him of the C would be more difficult than just never giving him one. -

The best the cubs can do before Memorial Day, is get back to .500, but not over. They could theoretically get over .500 ON Memorial Day, if they sweep the next two series and beat Tampa in game one. They are on pace to lose 92 games. They need to go 62-54 the rest of the way to finish above .500. That’s an 87 win pace, which may be a bridge too far for this squad.
