  1. they've sucked for three years, i can only hope we're well past the mid-point
  2. how much longer is Lahair going to be playing?
  3. the cubs need to replace the hookers they use to recruit players.
  4. I don't get this. You think he's going to replace Maholm in 2013? That's madness. From a value standpoint, I think we're absolutely no worse off in 2013 with Vizcaino + 6.5 million dollars than Maholm. Maholm is simply not a high bar. I still don't see how this says anything different about the fact that they are going to suck in 2013 and it's going to be a long time until they are good.

  6. What in the holy hell are you talking about? We have to wait for this season to be over to have an opinion on how good the team is? Where is the overreaction? The Cubs suck. The way things are going, on many fronts, it seems plainly obvious that the best we can hope for next season is to suck less. Yeah. Calmer than you are dude. Way to get all doom-town with months of reconstruction left before the first pitch is even thrown in 2013. Get all doom town? I'm looking at the team rationally, and with the assumptions that the front office actually is going to be continuing the plan they've had all along. There's next to no chance of being good next season.
  7. Him pitching in the majors seems like a very stupid idea to me. If there is any hope of him starting, he'll need the work to stretch out in a controlled minor league environment. If he's going to the bullpen, he'll still need regular work that isn't as easy to come by in a major league bullpen.

  9. How was he not a key cog in the rotation? Because he's easily replaced? Maholm had value, but it was as a guy you can count on for 200 IP of not-bad pitching. He was traded for great value that is set to be MLB ready next year, so I'm going to be skeptical if he's viewed as the tipping point for someone thinking that the front office is tanking future seasons. He's not a tipping point, he's one of many pieces that won't be around to help the team be respectable. I have no idea what sort of weird line of thinking you are trying to use here, but the fact is the 2013 Cubs are getting worse and worse. A year ago the 2013 Cubs had a chance of being respectable. That is becoming less and less possible with every move. I'm not against the trade, but the fact is a guy who can give you 200 IP of not bad pitching is something the 2013 team is going to be desperate for, as none of the people in the organization project to coming close to that.
  10. Better than what? Than this season's team. Oh, goody. It shouldn't be hard to improve upon this god awful team. Doesn't mean they will be any good.
  11. I think the trade of Maholm and the intention to trade Garza and Soriano say more about the 2013 intentions than any quote could. Maybe, although for 2013 the value of Vizcaino and Chapman might not be all that different than Maholm's 200 IP of 2 WAR. Considering how many of their trades have brought MLB or near MLB talent(Vizcaino, Wood, Rizzo, Delgado*, Stewart, Volstad), I'd want to see what the deal for Garza or Soriano looks like before taking it as a white flag. And even then, incremental improvements that are not enough yet is long ways away from Greenberg's "3 years away minimum, and maybe more" tone in the article. Regardless of the tone of some article, the Cubs have put themselves in a very difficult position to even pretend to try to win in 2013, and that's really all that matters. They are making this an unnecessarily long and painful process.
  12. no, they lost yesterday
  13. Sure, but we were talking about Olympic swimming It's naive to think that it's pretty easy to catch the dopers. Everybody who follows sports knows that the drugs are ahead of the tests. There's a lot more money in cheating than in catching the cheaters.

  15. I don't know how you can cheat in the Olympics any more (outside of throwing matches). They test the ever-loving [expletive] out of your blood. Blood-doping would seem to be pretty easy to catch And yet bike races still happen.
  16. It has to take years because that is how the front office has decided to go about doing the rebuild.
  17. We brought up Castillo and Cardenas for the 2 position players, so they need to fill the other rotation spot. Volstad and Raley would seem to be the favorites. Garza, Shark, Wood, Germano, Coleman should fill the 5 man now, right? Wood should go tomorrow on normal rest and then an off day allows them to slot Garza in next week. I forgot that Germano was taking Garza's spot temporarily. It'll be interesting to see if they keep both Germano and Coleman in there, or if they just viewed them as rubber arms that they can use to mop up innings while the roster was in flux. Well, with the lack of guys below them that need the spots I think they could view them in both ways.

  19. Park/league factors have to be taken into account when making the comparison. Yes, plus how do you just dismiss a 2 year age difference? Not to mention Villanuueva's fielding advantage. Vitters at Villinueva's age now was in AA with nearly the same OPS Villanueva is posting in A ball this year.770 v. .777. I don't think either are elite prospects. I just like Vitters hit/contact tool so much I'd rank him higher. Plus Villanueva's been hit 20 times this year that irrationally inflates his OBP/overall OPS. And one guy is good at defense while the other is bad.
  20. Not that I expected them to but I'm glad they didn't get tunnel vision looking for pitching.
  21. you can't just look at the numbers in a vacuum for these guys. on the surface hendricks looks good
