    "The Bears are one of the few teams that make special teams part of their foundation. Thirty-one other teams would do this, too, if they had a return artist like Devin Hester." Not sure about that for a couple reasons. The Bears emphasized special teams before Hester showed up. It was always going to be a big part of their scheme. Additionally, they went after Hester and Manning in the same draft largely because of that emphasis on special teams. I think some teams would do what the Bears have done if they had Hester. However, most would simply hope Hester would do what he does while treating the rest of their special teams unit exactly as they do now.

    LA seems to be the NL team willing to spend the most, so he should be on the phone with them often to try and clog their payroll and take advantage of them.

    Exactly my point. Coletti came out of this trade deadline with 4 big additions to his team without giving up his top prospects. Explain to me how this makes him an idiot or a bad GM. 4 big additions?

    Theo might be a very smart guy, but it bothers me that posters refer to most other GMs as idiots and somehow any success that they have had has been luck. Most of these guys have been in and around baseball all of their lives. I'm sure most owners wouldn't leave an "idiot" in the GM post for many years. All of the sabermetric analysis that Beane and Theo initiated has been implemented by most teams. Hendry ran the Cubs for a decade and he's a glorified gym teacher that doesn't understand a thing about numbers.

    He has no role as a starter on a team because he can't hit lefties and he's not particularly good against righties, plus the defensive limitations.

    He came on 3 years after Hendry, has just as many playoff appearances and a much better record. Comparing him to Hendry does nothing for me because I was shocked he held onto a job as long as he did, too. These guys are widely regarded to be idiots but the people in charge are either oblivious to it or feel obligated to keep them around because of their "success." Well, he's had relatively decent success, during a time when the ownership was in complete upheaval. I really don't think he's widely regarded as an idiot. It's a relatively small portion of the baseball following population that thinks he is.

    I hope they made the Colvin trade because they highly valued (and ultimately misjudged) Stewart rather than because they just decided they wanted to trade Colvin just because. Otherwise the Colvin trade would be a pretty good example of why that's not a sound philosophy, particularly when it's involving young and cheap palyers. That's ignoring the fact that Colvin was a 26 year old major leaguer, and we had a pretty firm idea what he is and what he isn't. Vitters is 22 years old and is improving his patience by the day. I'm willing to let Vitters hit his ceiling rather than decide it for him. It's not like this organization doesn't have the time to allow it. Yes, we need pitching. We also need someone to play 3B for the next few years until Baez is ready (assuming Baez is moved). I hope they made the trade because they thought there was value in Stewart and didn't have longterm hope in Colvin. Similarly, they could hold the same opinion of Vitters (all the talk of going after 3B, plus their insistence on quality defenders and the fact that they actually did acquire a 3B suggests they do have a relatively dim view of Vitters) and there is nothing wrong with putting him on a "we should trade this guy while he still has value" list. You just don't publish that sort of list.

    I don't know how bringing Jackson up will make him feel less pressure. I'm not sure if pressure is the issue, but it's conceivable that a prospect could feel pressure to make it up, and once they do, they might relax a bit and play more to their natural abilities. If you struggle because you feel pressure in college and you struggle because you feel pressure in the minors then I have no idea how it would be possible to avoid struggling while feeling pressure in the majors. Everybody says it's a lot easier to make the majors than stay in the majors.
