I think that is a risk some people would be willing to take. A year from now Texas very well may have gotten nothing for Brigham. It's not a huge deal either way, but I'd rather gamble on the young arm than the aging catcher. I love Geo, but I think there's a good chance he's done being productive player. I'm more or less neutral on the trade. My commentary was in response to somebody saying that if he played well in early 2013 you still wouldn't get anything of value for him. -

If he played well next year I'm sure you could have gotten significantly more. That's exactly how the Maholm deal happened. That is how Dempster's value went from non-existent to quite high this year.

He wanted to keep Garza and only wanted Soriano gone for contract reasons. I think it's more about him thinking this team was better than it is and about to go on a run.

And there's no cause for celebration once you get them. our bullpen FIP is 4.65 and has been below-replacement; good relievers are hard enough to find In a year when they didn't even try to find relievers that's not a big deal. They traded away 2 of their best relievers for more useful parts and another one retired. They didn't care, because those are replaceable parts.

Paul Sullivan @PWSullivan Since the Cubs are already paying part of Soto's salary w/ Texas, they'd get a refund on some if they don't choose PTBNL.

And there's no cause for celebration once you get them. The celebration is because while it may be realistic to think they'll both be bullpen arms, one could potentially be a legit #2 SP. And from reports that I've read, I don't think anybody would be surprised if Vizcaino wound up starting. I was referring to the 2 other guys as bullpen arms. I didn't realize anybody talked about Vizcaino as a reliever.

It seems to me that he would more likely be pulled as part of a potential trade rather than as a promotion in response to a different trade. There would be more urgency to prevent injury in the trade scenario rather than simply calling him up the next day. -
So did the Cubs really pick up the tab for Maholm's option next year? I thought I read something about that last night.

They got a guy who Law had as the 14th best prospect in baseball (and others widely had him top 50) going into this year for Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson. On top of it, they somehow also got a guy who can strike guys out out of the bullpen. TJS isn't really a huge red flag. If anything, it's nice that he's already had it. It'd be nicer if he had it earlier. Alright, relax a little. A prospect getting surgery is absolutely a red flag. It is the only way you can get otherwise highly rated guys for people like Maholm. Furthermore, I thought everybody hated Keith Law. It's a nice value for value trade, but they still just have a couple potential back of the bullpen guys and a rehabbing player. They've yet to make a huge deadline splash yet, although it was fun to see guys leaving left and right during the game.

Their biggest return so far this deadline is a guy who just had TJS. They really haven't gotten a whole lot.

According to Fangraphs he's been worth about $13.5 million thus far. Take that as you will. Fangraphs also has him as providing the 5th most defensive value in all of baseball (3rd most on a rate basis). He's certainly improved and was always underrated defensively to begin with, but that much? Soriano does currently have his best OPS+ number as a Cub though. With a coaching staff that actually does most of the work of putting guys where they should be, it is not an outrageous claim. no, it's probably still outrageous
