My Steelers fan friends say Spaeth was a blocking tight end that doesn't block well. Not sure if true, but I see him as odd man out.

"[expletive], WHY AM I STUCK WITH THIS TALENTED PITCHER?!?! OH, WOE IS ME." Are you really that clueless or just trolling? Who the [expletive] cares how talented is. A. He's not going to be around when this teams competitive. B. This team needs to be building for the future and acquiring as much young talent as it can. It's not rocket science. We need to turn him into multiple talented pitchers that will be around for when we are competitive, that's what I think most of us would prefer. It's impossible a 28-year-old pitcher will be around when they're next competitive? Don't be ridiculous. Management has given every indication they weren't planning on having him around. -

They were shopping him around because they wanted to, and now those efforts have been severely hindered. Exactly. I was mostly implying the whole Dempster ordeal which reported he was " furious" and " livid", but you know they were shopping Garza around looking for a huge haul with the extra year of control he had and now that's taken a huge hit. Not being able to trade Garza is more of an icing on the cake thing when it comes to the frustration. Dempster's move was the big blow. But not being able to trade Garza (rather than choosing not to trade him for what was offered) still has to be disappointing to anybody whose job description basically is to exchange assets for assets in a never ending quest to continually improve your team. Had they traded Dempster for whatshisname and Garza turned out to be injured and untradeable, I'm sure they'd shrug it off. But stop pretending it is not a setback.

Not to mention that the reason he can't be shopped is because he's injured and can't physically pitch right now, so that too sucks, in and of itself.

I think that is an overly rosy view with little basis in reality. The 1.5 years of control thing was real, and it will be gone this winter. Teams were almost certainly willing to take a chance on him right now, in what is a very hot market. An offseason trade will be tough to match what could have been done now, let alone "be better".

But keeping Garza is good. Not in the long run. Weren't you the "why are we afraid of good baseball players?" guy this offseason? Garza is a nice player. But I've been turned off by his downturn this season. And I feel that the results will always struggle to live up to the peripherals due to his putrid field and bat handling abilities. I feel he will struggle mightily to live up to the next contract (or the one after next if all he does is sign for 1 year). His age 27 season was probably his one off career year that won't be matched, but expectations and contracts will be influenced mightily by what has so far looked like a complete outlier in his career. If the market was truly as strong for him as has been reported this year, the Cubs will have missed a terrific opportunity to do what they have supposedly been trying to do all year if they can't trade him.

I wonder if there's some truth to what JJ Cooper (I think) said a few weeks back, something along the lines that Brett might've taken this "discipline" thing too far, becoming too patient for his skill level, as he doesn't have the hand-eye or bat control to get certain pitches in deep counts. I'm paraphrasing there, but the way Cooper made it sound, it sounded like Brett should be trying to go after good pitches earlier in the count. I don't know. I know the "s" word is bad to say, but it SEEMS like he's striking out a lot without taking many pitches. Especially when he was going at his worth about a month ago, I would look at the pitch-by-pitch and he had several 3-4 pitch strike outs. Could be he's taking a lot of 1st pitch strikes and getting himself too far behind in the count, kinda proving Cooper right. But there's really no way to spin the Ks positively at this point. I'm one of Jackson's biggest fans, but it's pretty bad right now. The scouting reports at the time of his draft said his biggest weakness was making contact. I do believe the patience issue has negatively affected his K rate; however, the biggest part of the problem has to be he simply swings and misses too much. -

That's the defense the cop's lawyer is using in an effort to get the guy's job back after being fired for calling Crawford the N-word. That's a real airtight defense. He didn't call him the N-word.

He felt he could give up more runs. Dempster had no business coming out after the 6th. Continuing in that situation played a pretty big part in some of how disappointing outcomes last year, like when he fell apart against Pittsburgh after he should have been pulled on opening day. He faced 74 PA last year after the 100 pitch mark and had a 911 OPS in those situations. This year he's had just 15 PA past 100.

The thing that he may very well have done wrong is lie to his bosses about his intentions. This isn't true unless you want to call the FO liars too. There have been reports that they themselves thought that this could be an issue. If Dempster had flat out said he agreed to the trade the FO would have been surprised with this string of events. That's a BS attempt at explaining away the realities of what's actually been said about the matter.

The Cubs going through this season without acquiring a top prospect in a trade is a really terrible outcome in a season of nothing but terrible outcomes.

And for the record, I don't really have great expectations for Garza over the next 5-6 years, so I'm not really in love with the idea of keeping him longterm anyway. He's not the guy he was last year, and he's not going to be young during his next contract.

Contract or control? Fair enough, he's under control. They can still trade him this offseason, next trade deadline or even extend and keep him. The amount of concern over Garza possibly not being traded seems misplaced. I think the concern is they end this trading deadline with no new longterm assets brought into the team when the only thing we've been able to look forward to in this god awful season has been the seemingly inevitable acquisition of top prospects. Garza was always the guy who could get them the most while Dempster was the guy who had to go. Just when it looked like they could get more than expected for Dempster, clearing the way for a bigger market for Garza, it all went to hell. It's not just about Garza not being traded, but rather nobody of value being acquired - potentially.

I'm not saying he couldn't have lied, I'm just not sure why he would do that. Wanting to look like the good guy while hoping everything would work out in the end and he'd be in LA.

It's a tricep cramp. Has no one ever experience a tricep cramp before? It goes away after a couple days, if that. Also "Hasn't pitched since his injury"? He pitched on July 21st when the injury happened. His next turn in the rotation would be tomorrow, with or without the injury, but he happens to be having a kid at the time so he can't make that. Not an injury, but a child, and he's slated to pitch when he comes back, a couple days off from his routinely scheduled appearance. You guys are chicken little-ing the [expletive] out of this. You sound ridiculous. Every report so far has indicated they aren't sure when he will pitch next. He might go Monday. But they don't know. If he can't go before the deadline, that's a huge problem. Pretending otherwise is idiotic.
