  1. Well people make accusations about players' mindsets "without really knowing" all the time. It can be overplayed at times, but it is painfully obvious the sort of negative stance people have taken on all sorts of players. Sammy Sosa's ego was overlooked because only an idiot would dwell on his ego when he was the best player on the team by a mile and a half and playing really well. The minute he struggled however he was treated with a hell of a lot more disdain than Ryne Sandberg was when he quit on the team midseason.
  2. Brad Biggs ‏@BradBiggs Tice: "Chris is over there on the left side. I didn't feel like the other player was up to par."
  3. Does Lovie not understand that there are world championships every year and lots of meets/competitions in the interim? I think he understands that but also understands about the timeliness of using the Olympics as a way to motivate his players.
  4. way too much discussion for an activity that is essentially practice for real sports.
  5. those mountain bike races were some of the more entertaining things I saw these olympics, so much better than road races.
  6. That is a ridiculously silly thing to say in 2012.
  7. Sorry Tim, but that is ridiculously gloomy. Disastrous as it gets? I could think of much bigger disasters than what Castro has done this year. Nice cherry picking of quotes. Fine, remove the defense and it's as disastrous a season as could have been realistically expected. The only offensive category Starlin has shown improvement on is HR. Every other category has regressed. That's pretty [expletive] disastrous. I'm not cherry picking anything. I condensed the quote because it is a ridiculous statement. There is nothing disastrous about regression by a 22 year old in his 2nd year. Regression is perfectly normal if not expected. It's moderately disappointing at most but it's not "disastrous as it gets".
  8. tried to get soriano out high and completely missed his spot. That could have been something.

  10. Really? How do you figure? Prospects have been valued more and more around the league in recent years when they used to be throw-ins for veteran/veteran swaps. A highly touted hitting prospect on the verge of making the majors will get you tremendous value in a trade.
  11. well, maybe just beer this time http://deadspin.com/5933659/the-red-sox-are-losing-because-john-lackey-likes-to-double+fist-beers-writes-moron god I love these idiots
  12. Maybe the dime a dozen guys, but Gonzalez, Teixeira and Cabrera are three guys who were traded at fairly young ages that brought a ton of interest on the market. It's not there's a dozen guys with a 900 OPS out there these days. Teams will still pay up for guys who actually produce a lot. Whether it's an established veteran or a hot young prospect on the verge a bit bat is a very valuable commodity.
  13. a 1161 equals 235 OPS+? How boring is that league? my god, there are only 2 eligible guys with an OPS over 900. You don't even go past the top 10 to see a guy below 800, top 25 to get below 700 and top 40 to get below 600.
  14. Would it really be that bad to shift Rizzo to a corner OF spot assuming Vogelbach is still hitting like a boss and can actually physically handle 1B? Or trade him when he's got a couple arbitration years remaining. If Rizzo really peaks at the "quite good but not particularly great" level many have assigned him then 3-4 years from now, if/when Vogelbach is ready, it could make a lot of sense to trade Rizzo if you could conceivably get more for him.
  15. When the most iconic name/face of a popular franchise that has been talking about winning the super bowl all summer just ups and disappears from camp without explanation you have to expect questions.
  16. Doesn't he have a crazy baby momma? I've just been assuming it has something to do with that. stripper baby mama and he's dating a crazy vaccine denier. There's plenty of crazy in his life that could lead to any number of personal issues. I'm guessing he has whooping cough.
  17. I can't imagine he would be excused from practice as part of negotiations. He's under contract, guys who sit out to renegotiate are subject to fines.
  18. twitter said williams played RT with the 2nd team.
  19. you don't draft a guy who looks like a whale when he's 17 years old and hope that he suddenly drops 50 lbs. most players get thicker, not thinner, as they get older. by most accounts, he's actually in better shape than he was during high school. he's always going to be fat or at least chubby, so you can pretty much assume that he's going to be a minus baserunner and first baseman. the hope is that he turns into a 30+ hr, high OBP guy and that overcomes his deficiencies in the field and on the basepaths. I've seen plenty of instances where fatty 17/18/19 year olds get into much better shape in their 20's. It's not that hard to do. As for their leverage, they decide if/when he gets a promotion and if/when he gets called up to the majors. They have plenty of leverage to try and force him into better shape.
