That would be a really strange argument to try and make. They were elite and they took a significant step back from elite. They missed beats. Why would anybody try to pretend otherwise? Maybe I'm misinterpretting your argument, but it sounded to me like you were arguing that they were elite five or six year ago, then went to average. I disagree if that is what you're arguing and I think the weighted defensive efficiency shows that. This may be a semantics argument, but I felt the tone of your post was basically indicating that they were an average defensive team. In fact, you states that. You also said they were not close to elite, and I disagree with that too. Yes, they went from elite to average in a hurry. They "missed beats" as others suggested they never did. They got better since, but they haven't gotten as good as they were when they were the best defense in football and actually a threat to score, let alone prevent the opposition from scoring. -
I don't think there is a lot of expectations that Rizzo will become a superstar. A solid player at 1B for many years, sure, but superstar requires a hell of a lot from a 1B.

It needs both. They need super starts a hell of a lot more than they need more average players. There's plenty of average guys already here, or easy to acquire in a hurry. Every team needs superstars more than average players. But the Cubs don't have a lot of either (especially pitching-wise) and, like you said, average guys are easier to acquire/develop. But some teams already have them, the Cubs do not.

How can you possibly say this? They went from an elite defense to just about average in a hurry. Then they ticked a bit higher again but are still not close to elite. They very much did miss several beats. They are very susceptible to the pass and have been for a few years after once being virtually impossible to throw against since you wouldn't get much yardage or would turn it over anyway. If you're judging their pass defense from last year, it was actually pretty good. Teams passed a ton on them, mostly because rushing was futile, but they held opposing QBs to a 79 rating. This all considering they played Rodgers and Stafford twice, Brees, Rivers, Newton, and Vick once. Their pass and overall defense in general the past 5 years compared to the couple years where they were elite. They missed beats, they've missed multiple beats. -

Eh, expectations are high, Vegas over under for wins isn't that much and most people still have them 2nd in division. Definitely not highest they've ever been. I think the line was 9.5 last I saw. Luckily I got 7 from a colts fan. -

Not sure where you get that impression... I'm liking Jackson and Castillo plus obviously Castro and Rizzo, but the rest of the lineup is meh and the rotation is far away from making the team competitive. I still think Vitters will be a decent player and soon. Plus I'm not convinced that Theo and co. won't improve the big league team as well. Improvement on this team could still leave it in very horrible territory.

You spelled ridiculous wrong. I said, it's a possiblity he will never play football again. Possiblity. That's two years in a row of season ending injuries. If you think it's a given that he comes back for sure, you are the one being ridiculous. Actually you said 'quite reasonable' which to me is a lot different than 'possible'. He said it's quite reasonable to say it is a possibility.

He missed his last college season and his first pro season. It's probably a good idea to never expect anything out of him. I don't really buy into the idea of injury proneness. That's nice.

Played well enough to get a job somewhere, I would think. Def. That's why we had to go with Blanchard for the practice squad. They'd never be able to keep McCown there. By rule they can't put McCown on practice squad, right?

Comparing football and basketball is asinine and there is nothing crazy about sudden death in football.

Sudden death isn't awful and the people who get their panties in a bunch about it are misguided. You also completely missed the entire point and glossed over the problems with how a football game would be played under NBA rules. The rules don't "easily allow" for a game to go 5 quarters. It's actually kind of hard to do.

I open to overtime if there's a good way to do it. I'm just not super convinced there is a good way. I've never understood why football does this differently than pretty much every other sport. If it's tied after regulation, play another period. If it's still tied, repeat. Doesn't seem that complicated to me. Well all sports do it differently. Plus there's very obvious reasons why they don't do it that way (it would be a horrible idea). Basketball scores change every 20 seconds, football does not. Timing for television is paramount for the entire business plan of the NFL. The equivalent of 19 inning games is an impossible thought for football, both for timing of the game, and the physical ability to have the players play.
