  1. Why should you be able to get 2 good pitchers out of a group of 3 bad ones? Because one was once a top 100ish type prospect that actually pitched fairly well for us last year and the other two have excellent stuff, but are still raw? The world is filled with such players who amount to nothing. You can't take a group of 3 arms like that and just assume 1 to 2 of them will be good.
  2. That's a quality disinformation campaign coming out of the Harbaugh camp. You think Ditka's stroke was a coincidence? I don't.
  3. You think Gould will miss the extra point after the defense scores? Because the defense is probably going to be the only thing that scores.

  5. No bidding. He's free to sign with whomever he wants. Which will be a bidding process.
  6. Isn't Kasper's strength his willingness to explore the world of modern statistics?
  7. I agree. 1 game automatic (unless there's a bye week following the concussion) is a good rule to put in place. It takes away the temptation and guessing games. Although it could make it more tempting to not diagnose the concussion in the first place.
  8. My guess is it comes from a combination of media members wanting the ability to throw their local team's best player a bone and just an overly cautious attempt to cover all possibilities.
  9. I don't really understand why they vote for as many players for MVP as they do. Why doesn't everyone just vote for, say...top 2. That should surely be enough to break any ties. Voting down to 10th place seems ridiculous. It is dumb, my only guess is that it was negotiated in the labor agreement so guys can use finishing in x spot within the 10 gets them some sort of bonus. The Baseball Writers Association of America labor agreement? No.... The agreement with the union/league. And how would that come into play with the BBWAA voting process?

  11. Aside from numbers, didn't Clevenger do a lot of stupid Theriot-like things last season? I didn't watch a hell of a lot of games but I feel like he was picked off, bunted on his own, fooled by defenders and a couple other things that stood out as stupid mistakes. Maybe it's just a matter of showing they mean business with the whole fundamental thing without pulling Quade and blaming it all on Castro and other guys who matter.
  12. Wouldn't it make more sense that the one area it could make a difference is at starting catcher?

  14. That would strike me as a terribly inefficient way to get a potential future coach into the system. I will gladly pay you 1.6 million today for an opportunity to pay you $250,000 to coach when you retire. More like, I can only pay you 250K later, but I've got the money to pay you handsomely now if you'll hang with us. Sounds good to me. I had thought about this myself, and then dismissed it. Not because it doesn't make sense, just because its a huge leap. And makes no sense.
  15. So you think we should assume owners will act in the best interest of fans and the city? What the hell does that have to do with acting in good faith?

  17. It's not so much a bad thing as it's a worthless thing to get "certainty" in the form of poor performance.
  18. Those were the "other options" only if you insisted on wasting a roster spot on a proven veteran backup catcher.
  19. I assumed he was writing it with the idea that you can't really expect a billionaire, especially someone like Loria, to act in good faith. that's a pretty stupid basis for an article
  20. you said league wide
  21. Brees was a success in San Diego before he ever had success in New Orleans. I have no doubt that Drew Brees would have been a good quarterback on the Browns. I have plenty of doubt. Going to a dome team with a high powered offense mentality was perfect for him. At the same time, it's not like New Orleans has a great history of making QBs. It was just the right place at the right time for all involved.
  22. There are a handful of teams who have done a great job getting QBs. The Colts are not among them since they lucked into it, without question. Most teams struggle with it, and some teams are horrible at it. It is a league wide issue.
  23. I...you too, huh? I don't understand how anyone could think the tone of the piece was appreciative. It was rather sarcastic, and to its credit, it did NOT read like something written by Matt "subtle as a sledgehammer" Taibbi. Appreciative or admiration is probably the wrong word, but personally the lack of judgment towards Loria(he does use "I don't blame him", "I'm just impressed", and "I'm just in awe" in one paragraph without sarcasm that I can tell) falls short of what anyone who looks at the situation reasonably should conclude. And personally, I found the effort to stretch this firesale as progress towards being contenders because of economic factors such a distortion that it colored my opinion of the rest of the article. He didn't get the benefit of the doubt after that. I'm between your two interpretations. I didn't sense as much sarcasm as CSC, but I think he did miss the boat with the "I blame the system and not the scumbag who is reaping the benefits of a flawed system" analysis.
