Yeah I'd be pretty devistated by losing Rutgers as a conference-mate too. Considering what was left in the Big East when they decided to join I'd bet the opportunity to travel into the NY market, however disconnected from the actual overall NY market, was pretty much the best part.

What is this swap and for what reason would Cleveland be dealing away a quality young 3B?

An entire state that kind of doesn't really care about Rutgers. South Jersey is just a Philly suburb, with no real ties to NYC, and it is Penn State country. Penn State, with a little Temple and other Philly college basketball teams of interest. North Jersey has NYC ties. But people don't grow up hoping to go to Rutgers. They want to go to Princeton or any other Ivy League school, and then you have a Penn State, Virginia, West Virginia tie to big schools. Rutgers is an after thought for the most part. They occasionally grab headlines when they have an outside shot of a really big bowl game. But James Gandolfini isn't much of a celeb anymore and Schiano/Ray Rice are gone.

Don't know much about Maryland, other than it sucks and produces horrible people. But NY essentially ignores Rutgers unless it makes it late into the season undefeated. This would have to be something where they are thinking longterm and getting promises out of Rutgers to rebrand itself or something. I guess having Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, Nebraska and a couple other brand name schools show up to High Point Solutions Stadium (yeah, that's what it's called and I had to look it up just now, does any other conference school play in a similarly horribly named stadium?) could peak some more interest, but it's going to take a while. NY already does have a fairly strong presence from other big ten school alumni.

Why should you be able to get 2 good pitchers out of a group of 3 bad ones? Because one was once a top 100ish type prospect that actually pitched fairly well for us last year and the other two have excellent stuff, but are still raw? The world is filled with such players who amount to nothing. You can't take a group of 3 arms like that and just assume 1 to 2 of them will be good.

I agree. 1 game automatic (unless there's a bye week following the concussion) is a good rule to put in place. It takes away the temptation and guessing games. Although it could make it more tempting to not diagnose the concussion in the first place. -
My guess is it comes from a combination of media members wanting the ability to throw their local team's best player a bone and just an overly cautious attempt to cover all possibilities.

I don't really understand why they vote for as many players for MVP as they do. Why doesn't everyone just vote for, say...top 2. That should surely be enough to break any ties. Voting down to 10th place seems ridiculous. It is dumb, my only guess is that it was negotiated in the labor agreement so guys can use finishing in x spot within the 10 gets them some sort of bonus. The Baseball Writers Association of America labor agreement? No.... The agreement with the union/league. And how would that come into play with the BBWAA voting process?

Aside from numbers, didn't Clevenger do a lot of stupid Theriot-like things last season? I didn't watch a hell of a lot of games but I feel like he was picked off, bunted on his own, fooled by defenders and a couple other things that stood out as stupid mistakes. Maybe it's just a matter of showing they mean business with the whole fundamental thing without pulling Quade and blaming it all on Castro and other guys who matter.

That would strike me as a terribly inefficient way to get a potential future coach into the system. I will gladly pay you 1.6 million today for an opportunity to pay you $250,000 to coach when you retire. More like, I can only pay you 250K later, but I've got the money to pay you handsomely now if you'll hang with us. Sounds good to me. I had thought about this myself, and then dismissed it. Not because it doesn't make sense, just because its a huge leap. And makes no sense.
