    You know damn well this isn't how it works. Some head coaches come from a defensive background, others come from an offensive background. Whichever one it is, they generally oversee that side of the ball and the other is left more under the control of the coordinator. This is how it works throughout the league. Also, one unit is pretty much half the game (a little less, but they've been consistently excellent on special teams too), so being elite on one whole freaking side of the ball is pretty damn impactful and important. And, what's your point? I stated his team has been barely above average and sulley stupidly tried to claim the defensive rankings refute that. This is an offensive/passing first league. That is what matters. Lovie is a 54 year old coach with 3 playoff appearances in his career. He's got a year left on his deal already. There is absolutely no risk of losing Lovie if you don't want to lose him.

    Only to the extent that Lovie finally changed his stance on how the offense should work. I hated Lovie's defense and run the ball first devotion. When in doubt punt. I hated what he did with personnel when he got more power after the SB season. But I have consistently noted that Lovie gets the most out of people. As long as there is greater offensive/passing influence elsewhere on the staff (and as long as he went away from that stupid "college teacher" attitude toward his staff") and they actually win more, he's fine.

    Just nitpicking this point, but you don't think a lot of teams would like to have Lovie? There's a lot of bad head coaches in the league. Absolutely not. Lovie is a joke among a good part of the population. Head coach is as much a strategist as he is a salesman, and you aren't going to sell fan interest with Lovie. He's been in Chicago for a decade and that team has a reputation as defensively dangerous but offensively inept. This is an offense first league. You win with offense, specifically throwing the ball. Lovie's had multiple first round QBs to work with, multiple offensive coordinators, and the best they can do is be respectable with the ball (so far). He's fine here, and probably has more value to the Bears since they like consistency and "good people". They don't want Rex Ryan types and they've shown little to no interest in putting their faith in an up and coming offensive mind. But it would be pointless to sign him to an extension today. The season started out as playoffs or bust, don't be stupid and assume the best from a solid start.

    He gets the most out of these guys, but they've been barely above average for years now. FO's weighted defensive rankings since Lovie arrived: 2012: 1 2011: 1 2010: 5 2009: 21 2008: 7 2007: 4 2006: 2 2005: 2 2004: 12 his defenses have been consistently excellent, not merely "barely above average for years now". He's the head coach, not defensive coordinator. Who the F cares what one unit was ranked. If he wants to go back to being a DC he'll be in demand.

    He gets the most out of these guys, but they've been barely above average for years now. I see no reason to jump the gun. It's not like they are at risk of losing the guy. He is not in high demand around the league and is already under contract through next year. An extension now is pointless.

    Then you have to pay more. Do it now, maybe get a discount. Lots of bad coaches out there. Lovie's at least decent. I don't think they'd have to pay that much more. Going into this season it was playoffs or bust. They fully expected to have to pay up for Lovie if they did well. Now let's wait and see if they actually do well. I see no reason to sign anything today. I assume any talks were about what will they be expecting if/when they actually do accomplish something this year.

    It's hardly sudden. Pittsburgh has a built in love/respect based on years of solid performance.

    I don't get where the Eagles apologist comes up with that. Philly is lucky to be 3-2 and he says "they don't deserve better than 3-2." The Bears are a bit unsteady right now, but I have absolutely no doubt they are better than the Eagles, not to mention the rest of the always overrated NFC East. http://espn.go.com/nfl/powerrankings/_/year/2012/week/6

    In all fairness, would you want to tackle Lance Briggs if you were 40-60 lbs lighter? Head on, no. But coming up on his heals yes, absolutely. Why wouldn't you? It's less of an impact than having a safety trying to tackle you.

    That WR should be getting ripped watching film. As the INT occurs they are essentially moving toward one another. His momentum is already back toward his QB, and a few steps after the INT he's within 2-3 yards of Briggs, and never gets any closer the entire time.

    I don't trust any "proven veteran" WR who is currently on the street without a team and available to sign.

    wtf? Grow up? What the heck is Cutler doing that's not mature? Sorry he's not a media suckup and doesn't really open himself up to the public, but taking shots at him like that is just odd. Oh poor Terry got an interview request turned down (presumably) and now wants to act like an interview with him is the biggest honor you can get in the NFL. Sorry but I can't stand the people who hate on Cutler because he refuses to reform into the stereotypical NFL personality. You have to love one of the most childish morons in sports media chiding somebody for maturity issues. I had heard something about Terry Bradshaw bad mouthing Cutler, and then in the postgame there were comments about it from the other Fox guys, but didn't know what he said until I saw that this morning. I think it was David Haugh who keeps harping on that issue on twitter.

    Marmallard has been yelling at his teammates and coaches more vocally, frequently and obnoxiously for a longer time than Cutler. I wouldn't even compare the two. Back when they faced each other and were mortal enemies and I was an unbiased observer, I could not stand Rivers and the way he acts on the field. He just yells at everybody out there the entire game.

    That's what was befuddling about the cheers. Yeah, Cassel's been atrocious and Quinn might be a step up from what they've gotten from Cassel (almost anyone would be), but it's not like they've got a hotshot young stud waiting in the wings. Quinn is in his sixth season in the league already. Sad to admit, but it kind of reminded me of Bear fans with backup QBs, and delusions that he will somehow make everything OK I don't think it was a matter of the new guy making everything ok as much as it was "oh my god Matt Cassel is the worst QB in the history of the world." he was pathetic

    He caused Brigg's interception with his hit on the back. Yeah, when a player is right in front of him with no blockers and no room to maneuver, Urlacher can still make the hit. But if you put a blocker there, or worse yet, a teammate, and he's essentially out of the play.

    My first thought was some sort of taunting thing, but then I realized where the clock was and assumed he was contemplating killing it. With a smaller lead, that's smart. With that score you might as well get your own.

    Second in yards per game behind Megatron. I didn't realize that Reggie Wayne has over 500 yards receiving in four games. Didn't he just have like 250 yesterday?

    The main factor is they went cheap when they first had the lights installed since they figured they'd only play a couple games a year at night anyway.

    Cousin Sal said something about the disappointment of losing to an average at best Bears team last week (and thought the Jags was an easy bet to win). I understand having doubts about the Bears. The offense is just so sloppy at times and the most high profile defensive player looks like he's done. But this team has 9 wins as a low end and is quite easily capable of having a bye week to start the playoffs. They are well above average.

    I actually sorta agree with this. I'm of the boat that Villanueva has been a bit over-hyped. I'm still not sure he's significantly better than say, Arismendy Alcantara, but Alcantara got hurt and people forgot about his season. It's not that I buy Alcantara - still wary of the bat the upper levels ... just not sure Villanueva is this stud. Here's hoping though. Have people sold Villanueva as a stud? I haven't noticed anything close to that.

    I don't think I'll ever get over the hilarity of sportswriters, by far the nerdiest group of people in the sports world, taking a never ending series of jabs at sports nerds. I mean, it's probably the same thing that causes otherwise normal human beings to haze younger people just because that was what they had to deal with. But it's still funny to me.
