  1. I believe he stole a base and hit a triple in the instructional leagues.
  2. Paul Sullivan (@PWSullivan) 11/23/11 8:50 PM Cubs offer arbitration to Ramirez, Pena, not Wood, Reed, Ortiz, Lopez or Grabow. Wood still expected to re-sign.
  3. I saw that as well, this would be particularly effective when a draft class is weak at the top. Just don't sign the top pick, use that money to get guys that might slip due to signability and get another first rounder next year when the draft class is possibly stronger.
  4. Boras is just mad because it effects his own pockets.
  5. Can we still sign this guy before the new CBA's international cap goes into effect?
  6. Couldn't you conceivably draft a bunch of guys with some of your higher picks that you know won't sign for slot and then use your "pool" money to over slot guys in the later rounds? do you not technically go over slot until you have signed players? or till you have expended your "pool"? Seems like the system is open to some loopholes. Or at least it seems hella confusing.
  7. Wait, what? I'm not an expert on this stuff and I may have missed some of the news, but why would players who aren't already our property be training at our complex? isn't the purpose of an academy to teach? My idea of how it's been done in the past is you recruit players you think are good place them in your academy and then teach them the game until they reach a stage in their development where they are ready to be signed into pro ball. since there is a cap now we'd only be able to sign a small amount of the players we develope there. Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way?
  8. *sigh* this is terrible. I'd love to hear from Theo, get his thoughts on how it effects their strategy going forward. WTF can we do? This is going to kill highchool talent coming into the draft for the next 5 years not to mention overall talent going to other sports.Selig is smoking some serious crack if he thinks this is going to effect the level of talent availible in the draft. When does the international cap go into effect. I'm glad it doesn't effect the older players like Cespedes or Darvish but damned this is gonna kill player development on an International level as well. Are we really going to shell out millions on a Dominican training complex to develope players for other teams? That seems like a total waste of money now.
  9. http://muskat.mlblogs.com/2011/11/21/1121-cespedes-jaramillo-ryno-santo/ Muskat mentions McLeod being down there but not Theo or Jed. She also says that the Cubs contingent will see Cespedes workout for them tommorow.
  10. Link: http://www.csnchicago.com/blog/cubs-talk/post/Kaplan-Theo-Jed-in-Dominican-Republic?blockID=598278&feedID=619 Is it a pretty big deal that Epstein and Hoyer travelled al the way there to see him or is that pretty standard procedure for a top international prospect? I think they normaly have international scouts that handle most amateur signings. With something like this involving so much money and years I'm sure they wanted to take a much more hands on approach and actually see the guy and talk to him themselves before getting further involved, it only makes sense.

  12. Saying he could potentially be very good is just ignoring the facts about what he has done in his career and the trajectory that baseball players take over their careers. I think if we do stuff like give him a shot we will struggle to be mediocre and there is no good reason to purposefully tank a season because you want to see if there is a one in a bilion chance that Bryan Lahair turns into a very good everyday first baseman. I guess I feel its very unlikely that playing LaHair is going to be the difference between playoffs and tanking. I think its more likely he'd just be the difference between mediocrity and tanking and to me if your going to be mediocre I'd just rather you tanked anyway.
  13. Why would it be a "throw away year?" To say it more clearly I don't think that the team we will field this coming year will be a playoff caliber team. I also don't think we'll sign Fielder or Puljos, but it remains a possibility. I just hate seeing people write off a player who could potentially be very good just because he was a late bloomer and it's a rarity for his type to ultimately produce at the major league level. I think if we are going to be a mediocre team we may as well give the guy a shot. If I thought we were defiantly going to be a playoff team next year I probably wouldn't want to risk it. My opinion about how LaHair is used in 2012 is largely based on how I see the off season playing out under Theo/Jed and I realize that most people here are trumpeting the 2 front war theory here. I just don't see our odds of being able to compete and build simultaneously in 2012 as very realistic. I think that 2013 will likely be the year that 2 front strategy begins to be a realistic possibility. There are just to many holes in our roster. If it pans out differently it will be because Theo/Jed pull off some real miracles this off season.
  14. My personal feeling is that 2012 will be a throw away year. Theo won't say that publicly but I think that's the way he will look at it as well. I think there's gonna be a lot of unhappy people here when that becomes obvious, although it may never be that obvious. it's the perfect time to try LaHair and see if he's for real. The popular opinions here bother me sometimes and there are a lot of bobble heads here that just go along with that opinion and join in running off whoever disagrees with them. Hell I could be wrong and maybe Theo will go out and get all of the pieces needed to make this team competitive in 2012. LaHair could just be a other Zuleta. That's not my opinion though.
  15. Welcome to the forums, popular opinion here on the forums is that once you reach a certain age your done for and no matter what kind of numbers you put up at AAA you don't deserve a shot at playing in the majors. I don't agree, but that seems to be the prevailing thought here. It seems to be based on what other players have done at similar ages after putting up similar numbers. Apparently thier numbers are suppose to be written off as some sort of fluke that can't possibly be replicated at the major league level.
  16. His father suggest a rule change that would make it where the top three bids would be able to negotiate with the player posted. I doubt they'd ever agree to something like that. My understanding is that the bidding process is blind, meaning that the bidders have no idea what the other teams interested are bidding. You could have one team bid 30 million and the next closest bid 15 million. I'm guessing whichever team the player decided to go with would be the one to pay the actual fee? So the Japanese team would stand to lose millions in that scenario.
  17. Twitter 11/19/11 5:21 PM (@PepeBeisbol) An MRI Will be taken to Carlos Zambrano tomorrow in his mouth,he can only have liquids now .. #cubs #mlb.
  18. @JimBowdenESPNxm JIM BOWDEN Cespedes bidding could reach a record $40m according to one MLB GM:FLA, WSH, NYY, NYM, TX,BOS,&Phila have all been linked to having interest He's apparently not aware of the Cubs interest.
  19. Twitter: George ofman (@georgeofman) 11/18/11 9:09 PM Prince Fielder might fit one of the Cubs needs, but he doesn't fit their budget. If this was two years later...... Apparently he doesn't have a good understanding of our budget.
  20. I thought Rhee had his fastball back into the mid 90s and had a plus change at the end of the year. If what your saying is true then I guess I don't worry so much about him getting picked up.
  21. Rhee is the only guy that really leaves me scratching my head. If we sign Cepedes and the 19 year old do we have to give the 19 yr old a major league contract? I forget his name, it was Jorge something wasn't it?
  22. that doesn't make any sense. So you risk losing someone so you can trade them? wtf Rhee is a legitimate starting pitching prospect who pitched very well last year. You risk losing him so you might be able to trade him? Very unlikely to make it through the rule 5 draft.
  23. Same here, that just makes no sense at all. Rhee Is the best of all the players they left unprotected. Any thoughts to why they would leave Rhee unprotected Rasin?
  24. Statement from Mike Maddux I’d like to congratulate Dale Sveum and the Chicago Cubs on Dale’s appointment as manager. Dale is one of the best baseball people I know and will make a fine manager. His tireless work ethic, commitment, and communication skills give him the recipe to succeed. I would like to thank the Cubs for the flattery and opportunity to be considered a managerial candidate. Possibly in the future a managerial position may come to fruition for me. I am blessed to be with a quality organization, the Texas Rangers, and am looking forward to the 2012 season with high expectations. The DFW area is a great place to live and my family loves it here. Also, I would like to thank the fans whose support of the Rangers has made our jobs even more gratifying. PS–To the fans I’ve met at the airport, grocery and home improvement stores, thanks for your support. It means a lot. http://trsullivan.mlblogs.com/2011/11/18/statement-from-mike-maddux/
