  1. Hey, Tiger what exactly does the fielding bible say about Jacque Jones' fielding and range. I found a little bit on one web site but not specifically what I want to know. Any insights would be great.
  2. yeah manny does still have a good arm. I saw him hose somebody from deep left at the cell last year. No bounce either. Straight into Varitek's glove.
  3. negrons winter numbers are awesome but is he destined to be a 4th outfield type or could he actually be a starter? seems alot like pagan, good speed, good defense, power in spurts ( probably more than pagan)
  4. I think you're correct that right field is tougher because of the throws you have to make to third base. Plus I think that when righty's hit opposite field the ball slices so that can be difficult to judge. Plus right field is even tougher at wrigley. I'm not too sure that manny could handle the winds along with all of the ground to cover.
  5. Actually eight seasons ago, 1999, is the last time he played center with any sort of regularity. So I wasn't wrong in the context of the coversation. Anyways my original post was concerning Jacque's ability to play the position.
  6. I'm pretty sure I heard it was bone chips in the elbow. Could be wrong though but it would basically be a clean up surgery unless they saw something else. I think he could have it done now and still be fine for the season.
  7. good catch vance, I was hinting at that. With manny's contract and soriano's it would make sense to play a major league minimum guy. I was thinking Jones, Wuertz and another. For Manny and maybe a prospect. and we take on all of his contract.
  8. He'd fit best in the A.L. but the Bo Sox probably want him in the N.L. If we get him we'd better have one hell of a Centerfielder to keep Manny and Soriano in check.
  9. I found an excerpt from the fielding bible that has Jones among the bottom fielders at his current position. http://www.baseballinfosolutions.com/images/Bible2006Sample.pdf its a pdf. scroll down to right fielders rankings. Funny thing is if you continue to scroll down you'll see he's among the best arms in 2005, his biggest asset as an outfielder. I'd like to see his 2006 overall rankings.
  10. Oh i know, but he keeps telling me how Jones has played 10 games as recently as 2005. So I just wanted to show him that during those 10 games he wasn't stellar. I wish I had the fielding bible becuase that would probably clear everything up.
  11. Kenny just wants to win and from what I've heard he questioned sosa's at bats in game 6 and 7 of the nlcs. I am all about kenny still even though his arm is only slightly better than Juan Pierre's. Defesively he covers as much ground and is a smarter player in general. He make things happen on offense too and he's exciting to watch. I was a big fan of his before 03 and have been a bigger fan since. Its hard to believe that he still doesn't have a ring. Back to the topic though, wilkerson would be a great low risk high reward signing ala dempster and W. Miller.
  12. In 2005 Tori hunter only played 98 games but Jacque only played 10 games in center. he also posted a terrible range factor of 1.88. they needed a centerfielder, why didn't he stay there? I think that it is safe to assume that twins thought him in capable of playing center and put him back in right where he could still be an asset. Ok, preston wilson do you want him in centerfield? Sure he could play there for a few games but that doesn't mean he can still handle the position full time. Or how about Darren Erstad? I wouldn't want him on my team at all and certainly not in centerfield. And both of these guys have a longer history of handling the positon than Jacque and are one year younger. Its naive to assume that he can still play there because he is a toolsy player. His range has gone down since 04, as has his fielding %, and put outs, while his errors have gone up in the same time. Not to mention those thousand hoppers he throws to the infield, he'll have more chances in center and his flaws will be glaring. He still has trade value in rightfield, or can stay here and play right but the stats point to the fact that he will be a terrible center fielder.
  13. My point about frank thomas is that alot can happen in eight years. I think that most people can agree with that. Also, it will be 2007 very shortly so I'm not far off. What, seven years instead of eight? He played more in left than center in 2000: 90 games vs 63. Since then he has played exactly 14 games at center field, not exactly a vote of confidence. Am I supposed to be impressed by the fact that he played 10 games there in 05? His range for those 10 games was horrendous. I think you're the one grabbing at straws here.
  14. Yeah but that was eight years ago. frank thomas was still playing first base eight years ago, you wouldn't want him there now. I think Jacque takes terrible routes to balls. And I don't think he has the legs to play cf. ANd I don't want to hear about how its easier to run in cf than anywhere else. A ball that slicesoff of a righty into left center is one of the hardest to judge as is a ball that draws to right center off of a lefty. Not to mention the fact it is not that easy to judge the height and depth of a ball hit right at a center fielder. Center field should be reserved for guys with a quick first step and a keen sense for judging the ball. Jacque's defense just isn't that good anymore. If he can play it his bat looks alot better there than most but I think that is a big if, which is why the cubs are looking elsewhere.
  15. Via Free agency: Lofton, Finley, Erstad (I doubt he can still play center though). Via Trade: One of the Devil rays most likely Baldelli, possibly V. Wells, possible wily mo pena (heard the red sox are sour on him), others? Though, Hendry recently said in one of the papers that he wouldn't want to "block" pie with a longterm guy in center.
  16. well, Hawpe has only put up that ops once. See Joe Charboneau. One year doesn't make the player.
  17. yeah but the fact is there really arent that many left handed outfielders that produce as much as him, at his price. And there are plenty of teams in the slim market for an outfielder these days.
  18. I dont think that rotoworld is very accurate in their assesment of Jacque. He is much more consistent than Dellucci and Nixon. Those guys are essentially regulated to a platoon positions. Nixon has had a huge poweroutage and Dellucci is all over the place Jacque while terrible against lefties still has a few good years ahead of him, and is the safest bet for the remainder of his contract. Plus his deal is very cheap in todays market. That said he should be very attractive to any team looking for a lefthanded outfielder with power that doesn't speciallize in on base percentage. Throw in a decent young pitcher like marshall who has potential and can step right in at theback of the rotation and you've got the starting point for a pretty good trade. I'm not convinced jones can play centerfield, so I'd like to see him moved for someone who can man the position as a defensive anchor making murton and soriano that much better. Preferably it would be a player with decent on base skills.
  19. sure with bill hall we'd be among the leaders in power but we'd also be among the leaders in strikeouts and would probably be doomed to repeat 2004 otherwise known as live or die by the long ball.
  20. I know that Gallagher is "untouchable" but that is probably the type of guy that it would take to get peavy. But in my oppinion, Veal is the cubs top pitching prospect, not Gallagher. Anyways, you'd be getting back a proven talent vs a ?. Up until last year Gallagher was considered by most scounts to have little upside. Things change quickly with prospects. Not that I'd like to get rid of him but if you have a better chance of getting to the playoffs and the world series in the next couple years without him than so be it. I get the feeling alot of people on this board would rather see the cubs field a team of homegrown talent than win the world series.
  21. I'm not too sure that the Padres would trade Peavy even if the deal was jones, Marshall, and Gallagher. They have a couple of good pitchers in their system but they are probably a year a way. It would make sense, they need a left fielder and someone to go with Adrian Gonzalez, Mike Cameron, and Giles. Plus they could use a couple pitcher who are close, if not there but there are other teams out there that could offer more than us.
  22. Even though I don't think Pie is 100 % ready to play in the majors I would love to have him in center. With murton in left and Soriano in right we need a defensive anchor and that is pie. Yeah his k/bb ratio is not the best but he is advanced beyond his years when it comes to defense. I think we'd have a nice little outfield. I wouldn't expect him to hit much more than .250 with 10+ homeruns though. If we can get lugo for short and spin jones/izturis for westbrook or another interesting starter. I'm on board. Plus with the way this off season is going it will be nice to have another guy making the league minimum. And, in general I'm always opposed to a team with out a rookie. More often than not they bring energy and enthusiasm into the clubhouse. Then again, I'm also opposed to a team full of rookies. The 06 marlins being the exception.
  23. beyond his attitude problem he just had surgery done on his knee. as per rotoworld 11/19/06
  24. thats what I thought but it says it. it is Muskat though
