  1. Yeah, and that's good to hear. My comments were mostly general, although based on what Theriot did last year, it could be easy to be discouraged. Then again, based on Piniella's decision to start the season with Theriot at short, Ryan probably didn't have a huge reason to feel a lack of confidence in his abilities. Certainly his manager didn't. It's certainly nice to see the increased patience and productivity this team has. Fans can't really tell why the change has occurred, but whatever the reasons are, I'm enjoying it.
  2. I'm not a big believer in players thinking in terms of stats. I think over the long term you can measure success in a player's adjustments in stats, but it's not going to do a player a whole lot of good to be thinking about his numbers every day. They have to worry about the fundamental and philosophical adjustments all the time and it would seem that a focus on stats can do more harm then good. They have to be aware of progress they're making that doesn't produce immediate results in a measurable way. They also have to stay away from "bad" stats. If a player focuses primarily on their batting average and strives with being a Juan Pierre-type player who leads the team in hits, they're going to overlook a lot. Now, he should be concerned with his stolen base percentage, but that is mostly up to the coaches to work with him on when to run and when not to.
  3. According to the Trib, Mark Bradley had his knee scoped. They don't know if he'll be ready by the start of camp.
  4. 2006 (134 ABs) - .328/.412/.522, 26.6% LD, .363 BABIP, .1069 BB per PA 2007 (537 ABs) - .266/.326/.346, 21.0% LD, .287 BABIP, .0821 BB per PA 2008 (169 ABs) - .325/.401/.408, 24.5% LD, .355 BABIP, .1088 BB per PA There sure are a lot of similarities between his 2008 and 2006 numbers aside from the power. If his walk rate and LD% starts to drop, so will his value.
  5. I know you have DirecTV, but do you have a DirecTV DVR, as well? I'm not sure if it works with old TiVO DVRs, but if you have your login information for DirecTV.com, you can set it to record remotely.
  6. I've disabled all sigs and avatars on the board. I can't take any chances on having the match spoiled before I watch it this evening.
  7. How the labor situation might impact Hester's contract negotiations:
  8. I went with Houses of the Holy. The other albums vary more to me depending on what mood I'm in and Over the Hills and Far Away is my favorite Zeppelin tune.
  9. Holy crap, indeed. I just got back to my apartment and went to NBA.com. When I saw that the Bulls won the lottery, I spit up the apple I was eating. Wow.
  10. Mid-90s FB (tops out at 97), plus slider, passable change. Hard thrower. Lemme guess... control issues? He has 8 walks to his 23 Ks in 21.2 IP so far this year at Iowa. Last year, he walked just 18 in 78.0 IP with 71 Ks at AA. He has also allowed just 1 HR this year and just 1 all of last season in the minors.
  11. Purdue safety Torri Williams was suspended indefinitely last week for allegedly stealing condoms from a grocery store the week before. He was already on probation for a drunk driving charge. That's not how you want to end your career going into your senior season.
  12. Four 110+ pitch games so far this season and none over 120 pitches, but since his first two starts of the season, he is averaging 109 pitches in 6.1 IP. He has yet to pitch more than 7 innings.
  13. If some sports writers don't understand how sports work, I'm not sure they should be expected to understand basic concepts of how computers work.
  14. This comes several days after Piniella said during a pregame show that he was paying "very close attention" to both Hill and Marshall pitching at Iowa since he wants to have two lefties in the rotation.
  15. That's a nice transition by Piniella from not knowing anything about Hill's back injury to proclaiming it's more of a mental relief than anything phsyical. But it's so unlike the Cubs to go to the media to promote the idea that Hill's problems are all mental.
  16. Going into today for Lilly: Innings 1-3: .497 OPS against Innings 4-6: .973 OPS against
  17. For any event in Illinois, regardless of whether or not the buyer and/or seller lives in Illinois, tickets can be sold legally for above face value. Whether or not that should apply to the proposed forum is another issue. Tim may very well not want tickets to be sold above face value for other reasons. It might be possible to hide the forum from non-registered users to prevent people from making first-post ticket offers.
  18. I went with allowing the DH in the AL. I could never vote for a scoring rule over a game rule, either.
  19. Assuming Hill will be on the DL for the minimum 7 days, I'm guessing he'll effectively skip his start since Iowa doesn't have an off-day coming up. I'm not sure how their rotation looks, but I figure he'll go on 9 days rest as opposed to 7.
  20. It looks like it will be in HD. Sweet.
  21. The called strike 3 sure looked low to me, but I'll take it.
