  1. Had no idea....good point. Knowing that, I think he'd be better off being limited to the number of innings he can throw his last 8-10 outings instead of just shutting him down in August. Thats unsettling... Looks like we're gonna ruin another great pitching prospect :x
  2. This thread was only 17 pages on premium? That's even more pathetic than the non-premium game thread. What does it cut out? Premium pages are 20 posts long, non-premium is 15. That's the only difference. And you pay for that?
  3. Those guys can't do any worse than the players we have been sending out for the last month. Don't say that, you and I both know that they can, and will.
  4. Theres something strange in seeing a complete stud pitcher like Smoltz up against some newbie the Cubs are trotting out in hopes of winning the lottery. Its strange and sad.
  5. Is this the right time to mention that wins are overrated? Yea? Ok. Wins are overrated.
  6. We both agree that Pierre has to get on base more, but as far as Youkilis goes, he was shoved into the position of being a leadoff hitter when Crisp went down and other than striking out too often and having little speed, he's done exactly what's been asked of him. As far as Ortiz and Manny are concerned, neither of them are setting the world on fire right now. Manny has been pretty much equivalent to our own A Ramirez and although Ortiz has plenty of RBI's which is great, his average isn't where it should be either. I think the interesting thing is that these two things don't really matter that much. While scouts and coaches may prefer to see outs recorded when the ball is put into play (for whatever reason), its really strike outs swinging that should bother scouts. Taking marginal pitches and being called out on strikes isn't the worst thing in the world. Stealing and speed on the basepaths is so unimportant compared to OBP, it almost makes me scream.
  7. I'd still trade his career average for Youkilis' beefy .431 (It is .350 BTW, and its been dropping for a while) epstein won't and where does youkilis play in chicago? he's a 1b/3b right? I don't, just having pipe dreams. I'm not actually proposing anything, I'm just saying, destroy the conventional thinking. Speed is far overrated, and fat guys hitting homers and walking...well...aren't. obviously, speed's not useful when you don't hit. pierre was a.355 obp guy before this year. then he became a cub and the rest is history. :x Other than the .326 year he put up last year with the Marlins. 14 steals and only 24 runs, c'mon now. There is some truth in the "load 'em up, and wait for the 3 run homer." Its certainly more successful then what we're doing right now. We've effectively purged any home run hitting from our lineup, so wheres our success with our speedy team?
  8. Welcome Mr. Hendry! I should hope the comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek.
  9. I'd still trade his career average for Youkilis' beefy .431 (It is .350 BTW, and its been dropping for a while) epstein won't and where does youkilis play in chicago? he's a 1b/3b right? Speed is far overrated, and fat guys hitting homers and walking...well...aren't. Youkilis is an example of that. Propose to one of the old timers a slow lead off man and they'll blow it off in one second. Unfortunately (for Cubs fans) he's proving them wrong easily enough.
  10. In a just world Neifi would be DFA'd. That would leave us with a bench of Hairston, Mabry, Bynum, Blanco. A 4-man bench. Even Hendry isn't that stupid. Don't forget Womack! w00t! *horns* http://www.delta.edu/jfrohm/sign/iloveyou-sm.jpg
  11. Dusty, Forget the fact that the Yanks have pretty consistantly held a team OBP over .350 for some time now, and they were consistantly over .360 from '96 to '2000 when they were on their run...they may not TALK about OBP, but actions speak louder than words... And why talk about it when you might influence schlubs like him?
  12. I've mentioned it, I believe its a full 70 points above his average, which means he's taken his fair share of walks. Its really puzzling why he's so anti-walk then. Maybe its some sort of conservative old-timer reaction to the 'Moneyball' precedent.
  13. I'd rather completely suck then win 70 games this year. Anyone with the same mindset?
  14. I'd still trade his career average for Youkilis' beefy .431 (It is .350 BTW, and its been dropping for a while)
  15. We've all complained about Pierre before, but man oh man, how has that speed helped us. At least he's that prototypical lead off man, right? Steals a ton of bases right? Lets compare him, to, oh a fatty that has no business leading off: How about Kevin Youkilis, the Greek God of Walks (As Billy Beane likened him) AVG OBP SLG OPS .317 .431 .497 .928 36 Runs scored (3 today) 5 homers, and just for fun, one stolen base. Pierre? Well, thats another story: AVG OBP SLG OPS .230 .267 .286 .553 24 runs scored 14 STOLEN BASES! (amazing considering how rarely he's been on base at all) Wow, that speed really has charged the team. Those pitchers are so scared with him on base they are still keeping us last in the league in runs scored. C'mon guys, walks aren't important at all. A fatty getting on base 43.1% of the time isn't gonna help us at all.
  16. What's their record when they out-walk their opponent? My guess is 0-0. Have the CUBS ever out-walked their opponent ?? Don't mind me being a smart ass..... I'm not having a good day. CUBS are 8-3 when they draw more walks than they allow CUBS are 4-2 when the walks are equal for both teams CUBS are 6-25 when they allow more walks than they draw. Go CUBS !! Not at all Fred -- my 0-0 guess was in the same vain. I'm actually stunned that they have out-walked their opponent as much as 11 times this season. Very un-Cub-like. Hmmmm...... 12-5 when they walk as much or more than the other guys.... Yep! That's it -- the only problem is just their hitting with RISP Andy and Jim! I hate that the team I root for is in the hands of stupid people. My smart ass-self : Try to find stats on how the Cubs do against the opposition by outhitting with RISP I'm sure its not the easiest stat to compile.
  17. Just came from the "Joe Morgan Appreciation Thread" in the rants section. Heres a great excerpt from one of the sites: EDIT I just realized i've been beaten badlyu i lost the game of life :(
  18. Par for the course, my friend. Par for the course. Actually, lately it's been a combination of bad pitching and bad hitting that's done the Cubs in. The pitching was pretty good today, all things considered. Marshall got himself into and out of a few jams, Howry did really well, and Eyre shut down the Braves. The offense, on the other hand? Blah. You just watch, tomorrow we'll put up 8 and lose by 7 runs.
  19. I think the point isn't that we aren't hitting with RISP, but more that we have absolutely no slugging on this team. Extra Base Hits get you runs. Singles do not.
  20. Par for the course, my friend. Par for the course.
  21. I don't understand this lineup. Murton doesn't have much slugging...Hairston and Pierre have woeful OBP...it just doesn't add up.
  22. Thats what I'm saying, Dusty is being too brash with some of his players...and well, not brash enough with some of his others. (He's moved Murton and Cedeno and Ramirez all over the lineup, yet he's kept Pierre in the lead off spot permanently.)
  23. i understand what you are saying but no one would do that deal Willis has sucked this year anyways You would suck too if you pitch 9 shut out innings and get credited with the loss.
  24. ...is wrong, nothing will. After yesterdays...gallery of terrible plays, Neifi Perez should probably be DFA'd. If he brings historical badness to the plate, the only thing he helps us with is defense- and yet he almost single handedly cost us the game yesterday. But with Dusty Baker as the manager, he's almost guaranteed a starting spot, HECK PUT HIM IN THE 2-HOLE! While our player with our highest OBP is sitting on the bench. Incredible. Either Neifi somehow saved Dusty's life from a Bus or something, I mean, I can't even understand this "man-love." Its just completely ridiculous.
