  1. its cool to get back from the gym, see the Cubs are up, and then go jump in the shower before going out thanks west coast baseball time, just this once
  2. With interleague and a relative competitive balance between leagues (it obviously changes year to year but not by much) just make the best record in MLB the home field owner. It at least gives a carrot to teams that have pretty much secured their spot to stay competitive in September. Isn't that what MLB wants for viewers to keep watching? (A month of games vs one All Star game)
  3. The astonishing thing about the Cubs drought isn't a legacy of playoff futility so much as a legacy of them making the playoffs merely 7 times in 70 years
  4. Don't get me wrong: I don't want to face the cardinals again - I don't want to give them the ~40% possibility of fluking a win on us - but if that is the case I'm just saying there are positives to it
  5. Upside to facing the Cardinals again: imagine how good it'll feel for us and how bad it'll feel for them if we beat them again. That's the beginnings of narrative making and crude sports stories about "playoff domination" (that, while, has no basis in reality, is very fun for rooting interests)
  6. When was the last time a team so outperformed their pythagorean that dramatically? I remember the...2007? Diamondbacks did something silly like that?
  7. I have gone over the course of the season from anger that a bum ass team was taking any attention from the Cubs, to laughing at how ludicrously bad they became, to just flat out feeling bad for Sox fans. Nobody deserves the indignity of saying "I'm going to see the baseball game at Guaranteed Rate Field" Well, maybe Cards fans.
  8. Chapman shouldn't have pitched in any game this series Just let Grimm finish it. This isn't hard, baseball. Be better at baseball, baseball culture.
  9. why? Wood is a terrible fartknocker and Cahill is better. He's better, though as I look at his stats his FIP is not as significantly better as I thought it would be (a 4.8 BB/9 is reaaaaally hurting him ) but beyond that he strikes dudes out more frequently and gives up less home runs and he's less of a dweeb I almost feel personally insulted every time Travis Wood comes into a meaningful game
  10. This is one of those games where our hitters have seriously hit like a half dozen liners and deep fly balls for outs that would typically infuriate a fan of this was a competitive game, but it isn't. They've been basically super impressive offensively since the All Star Break
  11. Trevor Cahill really needs to be ahead of Travis Wood in the pecking order
  12. I bet Willson was just as annoyed as I was that his OPS dropped under .800 I'm glad he heeded my aesthetic annoyance
  13. Absolutely. There was a period of time that I was starting to get worried the Cubs were trying to execute squeeze plays too frequently during the regular season (as I thought, hey, keep that horsefeathers under wraps and bust it out in the playoffs like last year) but they've been so good at executing that I'm cool with it.
  14. it would be cool, i would offer, to score runs in this inning
  15. One of the problems of Coomer (and yeah I flipped him with JD in my mind for some reason), is that he doesn't change the inflection of his voice when a ball enters play or not. So its impossible to tell if a ball is hit foul, or has committed an out, or was a basehit or *anything* until Coomer finishes his stream of consciousness. Even if he was bad but at least you know, spoke with a different urgency when a ball was hit into the field of play, he'd be 100 times better
  16. Hendricks gets the lead off man, nice
  17. Counterpoint: http://i.giphy.com/12xplSitgROgw0.gif I grasp your hand, as Dylan Thomas said to his dying father "keep raging against the dying of the light" I live in infinite serenity
  18. lol you're not gonna change people's nature dude, let the game thread be the game thread
  19. oh man Pat made me way too excited on that one
  20. lol. its almost awe inspiring how bad the Padres are this is incredible
