  1. What's the name of the squirly guy that looks like Robin?
  2. I don't think statheads value anything that can't be measured.
  3. Yeah, you're supposed to swing, not throw the bat at the ball. Unless you are Ricky Gutierrez.
  4. that's pretty stupid with 2 outs That's like spiking the ball on 4th down.
  5. I think we should put in Bynum for Blanco and sac him over.
  6. If you could make a trade like this every two or three years, it might be more effective than developing your own star players. If your system wasn't extremely deep, you could just use the rest of the minor leagues to develop bench player, relievers and borderline rotation guys to fill in for your perenial world series contender. There would be times when the other team got good players in return but a guaranteed star coming up every couple years would be hard to pass up. Maybe it's a crazy idea...
  7. Those are 3 pretty big "IF's". Agreed.
  8. I think if Maddux resigns with the Cubs for 2 more years, the Cubs win the world series, and he averages 15 wins, he'll go in as a Cub.
  9. What would happen if a GM wanted a player that wasn't availible but was willing to grossly overpay? For example: Wuertz, Hill, Guzman, Pawelek, Pie, Harvey for Felix Hernandez I would do that trade from the Cubs side. It's the kind of trade you could only do once because it guts your farm system but I think it would be worth it.
  10. OBP. Remember, a lot of the advantage speed gives Player 2 is already reflected in OBP and the other metrics. There's still some value outside of that, but not nearly enough to make up a 50 point OBP differential. So if both have 700 PAs, player A is on base 266 times, player B 231, and both have the same SLG%. You like 266 times with Mo Vaughn vs. 231 with Ricky Henderson?
  11. I have no idea if two players like those two have ever existed. I just don't see the point of having a guy who gets on base a lot but is the slowest player in the league vs. the guy who gets on base less but is the fastest player in the league. Let's look at this way: Two players, both bat leadoff in average lineups and neutral parks. OBP, steals and runs are the only stats that differ. They are both .270 hitters. Everything else is exactly the same. Player 1 has .380 OBP and Mo Vaughn speed/baserunning Player 2 has .330 OBP and Ricky Henderson speed/baserunning I guess what I want to know is the value of speed vs. OBP, not speed vs. SLG.
  12. Doesn't that depend on where in the order you want the player to bat? They both bat third. Let's say both players have 5 season in the majors. Player A has Mo Vaughn speed and is a station to station base runner. Player B has Juan Pierre speed. Player A's average and OBP dip considerably with runners on because he presses every AB with a man on trying to get the big hit and he strikes out a lot. Player B has his best numbers across the board with runners on. They play in similar parks with similar lineups.
  13. Which is the better season: Player A: .300 BA .380 OBP .550 SLG 30 HRs 90 RBI 80 runs 1/3 SB Player B: .250 BA .330 OBP .500 SLG 20 HRs 115 RBI 100 runs 55/60 SB
  14. He's 4 of 24 with a walk since opening day. Then which of these are classified as bad games: 1 for 4 2 runs 2 SB 1 for 4 1 run 1 for 4 1 RBI 1 for 3 1 BB Getting on base 1 out of 4 times is awful. That projects to 162 runs, 54 RBI and 108 SB. That seems alright to me.
  15. No, I'm saying he has had 5 good games (Cubs 4-1), 2 bad games (Cubs 1-1) You are the one saying 5 good+2 bad=terrible start
  16. He's 4 of 24 with a walk since opening day. Then which of these are classified as bad games: 1 for 4 2 runs 2 SB 1 for 4 1 run 1 for 4 1 RBI 1 for 3 1 BB
  17. So Pierre goes 0 for 9 in two games (Cubs went 1-1) and has 5 good games (Cubs went 4-1) and that equals a terrible start? He's a big part of the Cubs early success regardless of what his current OBP/OPS is.
  18. Answer-Bring up some non-prospect from the minors to do it.
  19. Believe it or not, Maddux is higher on the alltime K list than he is on the wins list, despite only reaching 200 Ks in a season once.
  20. How can you say that? It's only been 7 games, and Pierre hasn't been very good in them, terrible actually. OBP and OPS don't always tell the whole story. Pierre has 6 runs and 2 RBI in 7 games. That projects to 139 runs and 46 RBI. That's 31 runs above his career high and 22 more than his best season's combination of runs and RBI. He's doing a great job of helping us score runs right now. That's the name of the game. Runs and RBI are dependent on the people around you. If he weren't hitting so terribly, or if we had someone else there that wasn't hitting terribly, we'd have more runs and RBI from that spot. Yeah, of course he won't keep this pace up, and it is dependent on other players as well, but the speed factor comes in when you are saying someone hitting a little better would have done better.

  22. When I first saw this thread, I thought it was going to be another discussion about fish analogies, haha. Pierre has worked out for us too. I still say it's a good trade for both teams.
