  1. Wow. That's pretty ridiculous. Matt Murton<<<< It breaks my heart to disagree with someone cool enough to have Jack Bauer as their picture.....but I do. Matt Murton is already a good player and I think he's going to be a great player. I think he'll be as productive as Lee next year at a small fraction of the cost. And I'm not even talking about how much more I'd like to have Murton over the course of the next 5 seasons, just this next one. Over the next 5 its Murton hands down.....But gosh I love Jack Bauer.
  2. He's hit over .300 with an OBP near .400 the past 3 seasons. If he can be decent defensively, I would love him for 2B or CF. EDIT: the past 3 seasons his AVG with RiSP are .299, .321, .250. With the dip in clutch juice this past season I dont know if we should risk it. He was a real gamer in 05, but apparently he tweaked his clutch bone this year and I dont know how serious that is. All things considered, he might not be consistantly griddy enough.
  3. I have absolutely zero interest in Coco Crisp. They can have Dempster if they'll just take his salary on... but I'd rather save the cash and the roster spot than pick up Crisp. Oooh, a Dempster for Crisp deal wouldnt be bad if we made Crisp our 4th outfielder. I think he would be great for the bench, but I definitely dont want him starting.
  4. No thanks to Crisp, I cant see him being much more productive than Pie. And I really hope the rumors that Boston bid close to $50 million on Daisuke are true and that limits what they can offer Drew. It seems the Cubs are much more interested in Soriano. I'd be happy if we signed Soriano, but Drew fills our needs so much better and will be a few million cheaper.
  5. I just thought about something. This may have been mentioned somewhere already, but here's what I've noticed. The Tribune might sell the Cubs, they've put a huge emphasis on winning THIS year, a Cubs team with a WS victory would add several butt tons to their value. Does anything think the Tribune might really spend whatever it takes to win this year? They could spend an extra 30 or so million and potentially add several hundred million to the Cubs value.
  6. Reserved for when he misses out on all the non-cub FAs. It is funny that he's suddenly getting some love even though the 2007 team is identical to the 2006 version so far. Yeah, but minus Pierre. But c'mon, you gotta give him some credit. So far he couldnt be doing much better.....so far. I agree the Wood and Ramirez deals were very good moves, I just find it a little funny. Yeah, I think we should save the praise til we have a $100 million caliber team with our 100 million dollars

  8. I was just thinking about that. I doubt they would risk it early on, but if we're contending towards the end of the year and one of our starters goes down, having Wood on the team could be huge. I was also thinking about how much talent we're going to have with our pitchers. I dont know how much quality we'll get, but we have pitchers that have put up these types of numbers: Prior: 18-6 2.43 Zambrano: 16-8 2.75 Wood: 14-11 3.20 Miller: 15-4 3.28 and think if we add Zito: 23-5 2.75 I'm going to pretend that they'll all put up those numbers next year, nobody tell me otherwise. Prior is going to be the biggest key to any World Series hope next year. I think it could be done without him having a huge year, but if Hendry goes about planning this team as if Prior is a non-factor, then he has a year like he's capable of, we would be in very good shape. And I really feel like eventually Prior's going to turn it around and have a very good career.....I just hope it starts soon.

  10. Haha, I was gone for the weekend and the first 2 things I read when I got back were that Ramirez was gone and Boston had won the bidding. I was about to jump out of a window when I decided to dig a little deeper. I still dont think we'll get Matsuzaka, but having Ramirez signed and still having a shot at Daisuke is a lot better than what I thought the situation was.
  11. I never wanted a 26 year old man from Japan, sorry. ZIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNG!
  12. I'm not sure I wouldn't rather keep Jacque (never thought I'd say that) and put Drew in CF... (with the rest of your moves in mind) Murton Giles Lee Ramirez Drew Barrett Jones Izturis Looks better to me... Small issue, but I don't know why Drew would be BEHIND the big RBI guys. He's a career .393 OBP guy. Lee has only been that good at getting on base, once....and that was his awesome 2005. Drew's my #3 hitter. I could understand 4th to break up the RHs and have Lee 3rd, since he would still likely be the team's best hitter. But yeah, Drew in CF would be great. Of course, this is all just speculation until Hendry actually signs the guy, but if he is signed I think I would bat him 3rd as well. Depending on who is hitting around him, Drew and Jones might be the only left-handed bats the Cubs would have. If J.D. along with maybe a 2B were the only offensive FA signing, the line-up could read... Theriot or FA 2B Murton Drew Lee Ramirez Jones Barrett Izturis Its not the Yankees line-up, but with the right pitching staff, it would be enough to compete, thats for sure. Ok, I know the injury risk would be enormous, but imagine if we got Drew for CF and Sheffield for RF and they stayed healthy. Theriot Murton Drew Lee Sheffield Ramirez Barrett Izturis
  13. Maybe if we remind them that we saved their season by sending them Neifi.
  14. Man, for some reason I feel like I'll be really disapointed if the Cubs dont get him even though I dont really expect them to.

How about this lineup... Giles Murton (or Murton-Giles) Drew Lee Ramirez Jones Barrett Theriot Oh man, I know this probably wont come close to happening.....but I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.....in a good way.
  16. Just putting it in play should never be the focus. I think the focus can be more on hitting it far in the air, but unless the defense is conceding the run, and/or the runner on 3rd is fast, putting it in play might not help much at all. Putting it in play, to me, just means making easy outs. They need to put some authority behind their swing. At 2 strikes you can't be as picky, but you also can't just slap at anything that comes up there. Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of a situation where basically any contact will score the runner, such as the defense conceding the run. If they're playing in, then its probably different. Also if the game's not very close, it might be better to play for the big inning. I should have put more thought into my post.
  17. i am very happy with this signing. what an amazing switch in philosophy. nobody that i know has ever advocated going up there looking for a walk. it's exactly like perry says, shrink the strike zone, look for a pitch in that area. if the pitch is borderline, don't swing, even if you have two strikes. the likelihood that a hitter is going to get a good swing on a questionable pitch is poor anyway, unless the hitter is pujols, vlad, or aram. I am with you until 2 strikes - at that point you can't let borderline pitches go IMO. I wonder what he thinks of a platoon partner for Jones? the chances that a borderline pitch will be called a ball is much greater than a player putting good contact on it. i'm not inclined to believe the conventional wisdom of "choking up on the bat and putting it in play with 2 strikes" for the simple sake of putting the ball in play. there are worse things than striking out on a 2-strike pitchers pitch. if you can't hit the ball effectively and the pitcher happens to put the pitch in an unhittable position in the strike zone, tip your cap as you walk back to the dugout. there's nothing a hitter can do. i detest the idea of swinging at a pitch you can't do anything with, it's useless. major league hitters CANNOT be afraid to strike out on a called third strike. hitters that are are usually ineffective. I'd agree in most situations. But situations such as having a runner on third with less than 2 outs, with 2 strikes I think you have to just focus on getting the ball in play.
  18. Same here, I don't want either of them. Sheff is just one of those players I do not like. I like players that help the Cubs win - I remember that whole "going with good guys" after 2004 didn't pan out so well... If Kim-Jong Il had a nasty slider I'd want him in the bullpen. Why not as a starter? Durability issues? Have you seen his skin color? He couldnt last as a starter in that summer heat.
  19. Paul Depodesta is certainly not the answer to any of our problems DePodesta was unfairly made the scapegoat for the Dodger's struggles by baseball Neanderthals like Bill Plaschke - he's a smart, competent GM. Did you know that on average, the brains of Neanderthals were 13% larger than modern man's? We have also discovered a great deal of evidence for sophistication, such as sewing needles. Sorry for posting this, I know its completely unrelated to anything. Stuff like that just really is a pet peeve of mine...but I forgive you.
  20. Did Zito really say he won't play for the Cubs? What is the source? "Why would n e 1 want to play for the cobs with fat hendry" -Hendryisfat from the Cubs.com message board. I'm pretty sure thats the source.
  21. I think that Nomar would be a great option for 2B or SS actually. Hopefully we will pursue him even if we do sign Aram back. He would be invaluable playing all over the infield, and maybe even in the oufield. From everything I've heard, Nomar cant play SS anymore. I wouldnt mind trying him at 2B, or maybe a platoon partner for Jones in RF. And I think he would definitely be a good option for 3B if Ramirez leaves.
  22. Notice there is no mention of the Cubs. Benson and a reliever is way overpaying for a 39 year old ex-steriod using pain in the butt like Sheffield. Benson isnt exactly top-of-the-line, so unless its a really good reliever, I wouldnt consider that way overpaying. I think Marshall would have more value than Benson and I'd be willing to give him up, although I'd rather give up Eyre.
  23. I guess the question would be what qualified for a genuine interest in signing him. Would offering Matsuzuka a 6/30 deal qualify as genuine? I don't know and I don't know if the commisioner would agree or not. Definitely, Daisuke has no room to complain about a 6/30 deal. That wouldn't be a bad deal for a team. Submit a 50 million posting fee and then offer Daisuke 6/30. At worst, you have him for a cost of 80 million which is like 13 million a season. That's cheaper than offering a 30 million posting fee and then paying him 10 million a season. He may turn it down, but then he's kept from signing elsewhere. The only damage may be that he won't negotiate with that team when he returns as a FA next season. That's not taking advantage of the system though. If a team won with a 30 million bid, they could (and should) offer him a deal like that. Look at Ichiro for an example of a posted player's initial contract. What was his initial contract?
