  1. I for one am glad that Blanco beat out Moore for the 1B job now that Lee is out attending to family matters. Who wants to see some rookie play in September on a team 29 games under 500 when we can enjoy a crafty veteran who has been in the league nearly 10 years and sports a career OPS+ of 64? Tell me, who?!?! Umm...I think pretty much everybody except Baker, duh!....Oh wait, I still havent caught on to the whole sarcasm thing.
  2. I did the math, Kerry Wood has made $14,171.51 per pitch the past two seasons. And considerably more per strike. This year he has made $53,140.10 per strike. More than most people make in a year. I'm not saying all this because I dont want him back, I would love to sign him as a reliever...I just thought it was interesting.

  4. It'd be an interesting statistic to figure out how much money Wood has made per pitch the past 2 seasons. I might try to figure that out. That said, under no circumstances should the Cubs resign Wood with the intent of having him be a starter. I do think he could be an absolutely amazing closer. I remember watching him in relief last year and the hitters just looked helpless; it was one of the most enjoyable times I've ever had watching baseball.
  5. Oh man, if that happened I would crap my pants every hour on the hour. Can you imagine how big a deal ESPN would make of Soriano and ARod being on the same team? But imagine that lineup: Murton Soriano Lee ARod Ramirez Jones Barrett Pie That could be the best 2-5 in history......Why am I even thinking about this? Its just going to make me cry when I see what we really get.
  6. Alright, so is this something that's actually going to happen, cause I've heard this several times before. I dont want to get my hopes up if this isnt the real deal. And Cuban doesnt seem like the kind of guy that would want to settle for the Pirates. He seems like he's the kind of guy that goes all out. I would buy him flowers and a cute stuffed animal every valentines day if he bought the team.....and after he brought us a championship I'd have another name to add to my sig.
  7. I'd prefer a balanced lineup with righties and lefties but I would take the 8 best hitters regardless. But if there were two equal choices and one was a leftie and one was a rightie, I'd choose the lefty.
  8. If I couldn't make trades for players that would help the team and I couldn't sign any FA, then I'd probably unload all my vets for more prospects because the team as it is now can't compete. That would be making trades, you're not playing by the rules [-X . But I was more talking about playing Macgyver than realistic scenarios.
  9. Here's a little twist to the playing GM game: How would you construct the team if you couldnt make any trades or sign any FA(besides those already on the team that you'd be re-signing)? In other words, what do you think would be the best team with the players we already have? I think I'd have this lineup: SS- Theriot LF- Murton 1B- Lee 3B- Ramirez RF- Jones/ Restovich C- Barrett CF- Pie/ Pagan 2B- Moore (I'd experiment with him there, if it didnt work I'd put Theriot at 2B and have Izturis and Cedeno fight for SS) Zambrano Hill Prior Miller Marshall/ Guzman/ Marmol/ Mateo Wood Howry Eyre Wuertz Dempster Ohman Marshall/ Guzman/ Marmol/Mateo Bench: Blanco, Restovich/ Jones, Pagan/ Pie, Izturis/Cedeno/Moore, Bynum If a few things went right I think that could be a pretty decent team. Then again if a few things went wrong it'd be awful. Not saying I dont think we should make any moves, I just wanted to do this for fun.
  10. If Kent was a possibility he'd be my first choice. But since he's not, my top 5 choices in order would be Soriano, Loretta, Giles, Castillo, Durham. Giles would probably be my first choice if it werent for injuries. If we got any of those five plus a power bat in CF, RF, or SS (or a good OBP guy if we got Soriano) then I think we'd be in good shape.
  11. The Cubs are on the list of teams Hunter counldnt be traded to, so it seems unlikely that he'd want to sign here as a FA.....at least I hope. Hunter went on record stating that he would play for the Cubs. Hopefully he was joking. But i do remember reading something about that now. I dont think he'd be awful, there are just a lot of better options, or options that are equal production wise but much cheaper. But I'm with the other/original Vance in hoping that Hendry goes after Andruw Jones...I think that'd be my first choice.
  12. It's pretty hard to compare something like runs scored when Posednik plays for a team with an outstanding offense (with a DH) and Pierre plays for a team with a pitiful offense. Put Konerko, Thome, and Dye in the Cubs' lineup and Pierre would have more runs scored. Also, there has been talk of going after Soriano for CF. I wasn't comparing Pierre and Podsednik to see who has had a better season. I just was trying to give a basis for comparison to show how mediocre Pierre has been this year and show that despite this very ordinary season, the Cubs are willing to offer him a multi-year deal. Couldn't Matt Murton equal these numbers in the leadoff slot at a fraction of the cost? I think Murton could far exceed those numbers, while many times cheaper. Here is the comparison, and this is Murton's first full year: AVG (Pierre's strongest stat): Murton +.011 OBP: Murton +.034 SLG: Murton +.061 And in 235 less at bats, Murton has 10 more home runs, 23 more RBI's, and only 18 less runs scored. Put Murton at leadoff or the 2 spot for a whole season and he will dominate Pierre's stats while making like 20 times less. But he doesn't have the speed to steal bases  Touche.....Disregard everything I said, Pierre must be the better leadoff hitter  <---- How it makes me feel that Hendry really believes that.
  13. A few questions open for anyone to take a crack at: How serious do you think Toronto will be about trading Wells? How much is he making? What do you think it would take to get him? Do you think he's worth it or do you think this year is a fluke? Would you rather go after him or Jones or someone else for CF?

  16. Petition to ban people making outrageous claims about Mark Prior. Petition to ban the phrase "petition to ban". I win. Petition to let me do this " " every time TT says Petition to ban rolleyes. Petition to eat candy for dinner and stay up really late even if my parents tell me not to.
  17. Is Kent a free agent or would you try to trade for him? I havent heard anything about him being a FA, but if thats the case I think he'd be an amazing pickup. If he could produce the numbers of any the 9 seasons previous to this year, along with us adding someone like Jones or Wells for CF, or someone like Tejada at SS, then I think we'd have one of the top 3 linesups in the league.
  18. The guys I would try to sign would be Schmidt, Loretta, Wood, and Miller. I would let Pierre, Blanco (even though I love him), and Mabry go, and try to trade Izturis for whatever I could get, even if it nothing. Then I would trade for Andruw Jones. I think a decent package would be something like Marmol, Mateo, Ryu, Aardsma, and Moore (I'd try not to give up Pie, but I'd be willing to). Then I'd platoon J.Jones with Restovich and let Cedeno and Theriot fight for the starting SS spot. 2B-Loretta LF-Murton 1B-Lee CF-A.Jones 3B-Ramirez RF-J.Jones/ Restovich C- Barrett SS- Theriot/Cedeno Zambrano Schmidt Hill Prior Miller/Marshall/Guzman/a surprise like Gallagher Closer- Wood Howry Eyre Wuertz Ohman Dempster Miller/Marshall/Guzman Bench: Soto Pagan Restovich Cedeno/ Theriot FA bench player with decent power/ or someone like Bynum Edit: First I would sign either Girardi or the Braves guy as manager, and get a whole new coaching staff, maybe Sandberg as hitting coach because I'm in love with him. Also, if I couldnt trade for Jones, I'd try to sign Soriano and try him in center. And if that didnt work, I'd try to trade for Wells for CF. If THAT didnt work, I'd put J.Jones in CF and sign Catalanotto or Nixon for RF. That would be my last choice because we'd still lack power, but we'd have OBP.
  19. Oh Matt Murton, how I love thee. Him not being on this team next year would be a big big mistake. He just keeps on earning his spot as my favorite player.
  20. I think he would be a horrible alternative. He's fragile, old, inconsistent, overhyped and a guarantee to be overpaid. And his solid 2nd half has taken place in half the innings than his horrible 1st half. Andy has had a nice career, and he's had some very good to great seasons, but most of the time he's been right around average, or juts a little above. And just to emphasize, he's been dogged by elbow issues for a very long time. Well that answers my question. It just seemed like a lot worse pitchers were being brought up, but with his injuries and high salary I guess it makes sense.
  21. Miller's last couple starts will be interesting. It'd be great if he could return to his pre-injury self and resign with the Cubs. Imagine if he returned to his potential along with Prior and the Cubs signed Schmidt. Zambrano, Schmidt, Hill, '03 Prior, '01-'04 Miller. ....There I go being all optimistic.
  22. I havent seen many people mention Pettitte as a possibility for next year. Is it because of his bad year (bad first half, he's had an ERA of 2.89 since the ASB), think he'll ask for too much, is it assumed he'll return to Houston, or do people just not think he's very good? I dont think he should be the first choice but it we lose out on Zito and Schmidt, he doesnt seem like a horrible alternative.
  23. its been a trend for a few years now. ERA's of 3.52, 3.53, 2.70, 2.98 arent exactly horrible. He may not be as good as he used to be, but I'll take an ERA of 3.50'ish. Any year previous to this year and he'd be in the top 8 in the NL. But the original question remains, are his 2006 stats going to become a trend?
  24. Thanks to goony for pointing out this thread. I mentioned in my irrelevent thread that if the Cubs made this trade then signed Loretta, they would be pretty solid. A line up of Loretta, Murton, Lee, A.Jones, Ramirez, J.Jones, Barrett, Izturis/ Theriot has a lot of potential. Add in a rotation of Zambrano, Hill, Hudson, Prior, young guy/ Miller/ FA like Meche or Padilla, and that looks like a contending team.
  25. I think there might be a topic about Andruw Jones already, but I couldnt find it. But anyway, I found this in the Barry Rozner article in the Daily Herald: I know Hudson's had a bad year, but he's been very good the rest of his career. Unless there's something wrong with him that I dont know about, he doesnt seem like a huge gamble. If the Cubs were to trade for Jones and Hudson, what do you think it would take? I'm thinking maybe Marmol, Ryu, Mateo, Pie, Moore, or something along those lines. But if we made that trade and then signed someone like Loretta for 2B, I think we'd have a very good team. Loretta Murton Lee Jones Ramirez Jones Barrett Izturis/ Theriot Zambrano Hudson Hill Prior Marshall/ Guzman/ Miller/ or FA like Meche or Padilla Does this seem possible/ a good idea?
