  1. Clutch defense? I dont think there is a such thing. I think I said "clutch hitting". For example: The Cardinals had runners on 2b with 2 outs the whole world series. Their hitters found a way to get that run in. That's clutch hitting. LOL! Next you're going to be telling me that gritty players are over-rated.
  2. Not if the mighty Ball State Cardinals have anything to say about it next week.....oh my goodness thats going to be bad. Has a football team ever won a game by more than 100 points?
  3. I've laughed out loud more reading this thread than watching Blue Collar Comedy Tour (I've laughed about 3 times....so 3 times more than BCCT to be exact). I think what this thread proves more than the importance of pitching and more than the importance of hitting, yes even more than the importance of clutch defense, is that ESPN and Joe Morgan need to be stopped. Joe Morgan's book "Baseball for Dummies" is just that. P.S. abuck is my new favorite poster.
  4. co-sign adding a 3rd signature. Finally a rotation that doesn't depend on Prior. 8) So you hate any rotation that has Prior as the 5th starter, but a rotation with "5th starter" at the 5 spot works for you? And hoping Prior can be the 5th starter is not depending on him in any crucial way. Penciling him in at the 5 spot could give you the best 5 pitcher in baseball, or you could have to replace him with someone like Marshall or Mateo and get league-average 5th starter quality.
  5. Exactly. Typical garbage from them. In all fairness, it wouldn't be very smart to spend 17-20 million per year on him when we have so many other holes to fill. Unless the posting fee doesn't count towards the payroll budget, it wouldn't make a lot of sense. What the Cubs should do is try and get Kuroda as quickly as possible, while at the same time get Schmidt/maybe Zito locked up as quickly as possible while other teams are focusing on Matsazuka. But multi-tasking doesn't seem to be Hendry's best quality. Thats what I would hope for, except I doubt Schmidt and Zito sign before Matsuzaka is off the market so they can get teams in a bidding war for them.
  6. I agree, he's only had a couple good seasons in his career. This season seemed more like the norm.
  7. If we sign another cheaper guy from Japan to be our 4 or 5 pitcher, doesnt mean we wont go after someone like Zito or Schmidt too. And Kuroda probably has a better chance of having a great year than any other 4 or 5 starter we could sign. And over $20 million just for the rights to negotiate with Matsuzaka seems pretty steep. I think the Cubs would be doing the right thing in not going crazy in that bid as long as they sign another top starter.
  8. i'll take going to hell and seeing the cubs win it all What if there's baseball in heaven and the Cubs win every year? ....This is getting pretty deep, I think we need the Pope to make a ruling on this.
  9. "And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." -Romans 5:3-4 "My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in." -Proverbs 3:11-12 I think there's a special place in heaven for Cubs fans.
  10. I'm pretty sure he linked his source to the cubs.com message board, more specifically the post entitled "JIM HENRY IS AN IDOT!!1!"
  11. I can die a happy man now, thank you for that link.
  12. It really sickens me that the Cardinals are in the World Series. They are just not very good. At least it gives us more hope for next year. If we can pick a big bat and a couple starters there is no reason we shouldnt easily take the division.
  13. If I remember correctly, Lofton "questioned" Sosa's committment ot playing to win, or something like that. And people say Lofton isn't the easiest person to get along, but Sosa pissed off alot of people in Chicago (Wood/Girardi/Grace, etc, etc) so I tend to believe Kenny was in the "right" with his altercation with Sosa. Why do people continue to sign the Soriano to CF song? I don't get it. I think Lofton went after Sosa after Game 7 for not taking more pitches in the 8th inning. There was a rumor that someone threw a punch. That doesnt seem like it would bode well for Kenny, he's not a big guy.
  14. That was one of the most amazing plays I've ever seen. I thought for sure the Mets were going to pull it off after that. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061019&content_id=1718403&vkey=ps2006news&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
  15. They booed Santa Clause, that's all you need to know It wasn't that great of a movie, to be fair. What movie? That actually happened. It was a joke because the e was added on to the end of Santa Claus, which made it the movie with Tim Allen in it rather than the person. I faintly remember hearing about them booing Santa, but could someone refresh my memory on the whole story? And nice reference with Santa Clause....cant wait for the conclusion of the trilogy. You mean the "greatest holiday trilogy of all time?" I dont know about the greatest holiday trilogy, but its definitely in the top 10.

  17. How great would it be to get ARod with only Francis Beltran type players. Not going to happen, but that'd be pretty sweet.
  18. Their treatment of very good players is really weird. Do that fans hate these guys or just managment?
  19. Hey! Quit stealing my thoughts! But, I don't ever remember reading or hearing anything suggesting that Rothschild was at odds with Baker, which makes me believe he was just as responsible, or maybe even more, than Baker. I think Bruce Miles strongly implied it.
  20. He may have OBP near .400 and SLG over .500, but what was his average with RISP in the 8th inning or later in games within 3 runs in the last 2 months of the season? Huh? HUH!? I've mentioned Burrell being available in a couple threads and how I'd love to get him. But I agree that we should find a spot for Murton. I think Murton's defense is very much under estimated and he could fairly easily handle RF. Not saying he'd win a gold glove or drive in as many runs with his glove as Izturis, but I think he could handle it. And I dont think it would take much to get Burrell. Everyone knows Phily wants to get rid of him and he's not very highly valued anyway. I think Jones and a B prospect might do it. Get Burrell for LF, move Murton to RF, sign Lofton for CF, and Soriano for 2B and how about this lineup: Lofton, Burrell, Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Murton, Barrett, Izturis. Not too shabby, and very realistic.
  21. Craig Wilson would be a nice addition to the bench, but I'd rather just replace Jacque with Austin Kearns. It would be nice to have a RF who might throw someone out at the plate once in a while. Craig Wilson is a FA, correct? Why would he sign with a team to be in a platoon or be on the bench when there are many teams he could start for? He was labeled a platoon guy with one of the worst teams in baseball, I'm not sure the rest of the league is dying to give him a starting job. Plus, money is the reason he might accept a platoon role. I just checked his numbers the past couple years and they werent nearly as good as for some reason I thought they were. I now understand him being platooned......carry on.
  22. I havent looked through the whole thread so I dont know if this has been discussed yet, but can Pat Burrell play RF? The Phillies are looking to trade him and even pay part of his salary. What would you think of a Jones for Burrell deal?
  23. Choi Salary dump. Florida was going to non tender Lee after the Baltimore deal fell through. Hendry swooped in and made a decent deal, but Choi's value wasn't near Hill's at the moment. How about Francis Beltran, Justin Jones, and Brendan Harris? Yeah, Nomar was injured, but Jim still sold pretty high and got Nomar and Murton out of it. Without Murton, that's not that great of a deal. We got 35 games out of Nomar in 2004, and 60 or so in 2005. Not that we gave up a lot, but we didn't exactly get what we were expecting from Nomar. Yeah but you cant put hindsight into that. At the time Nomar was a big deal. At the time that was a great deal.
