  1. Murton? I wasn't aware there was a knock on him, he's been hitting fine. He's hardly been too patient, no matter what Cubs coaches say.
  2. Doublefest, Jones is alive. Pat sounded a little funny there, he was all excited talking about Jenkins chasing it, then he just non chalantly mentioned that it hit off the wall.
  3. First off, using average as your only tool is weak. Second, terrible does not solely describe the worst player. There isn't just one terrible player per team. Juan Pierre is not a terrible player, but he has been playing terribly.
  4. What if you overpay for Clark? My love for Choi has fallen quite a bit. But he's hardly worthless. Choi actually could very easily have a career similar to Clark's. And Clark is no guarantee to produce much of anything.
  5. that's the sad thing. True, but I also agree the angst should be directed at Hendry for bringing him in at ridiculous $$$$, rather than at Jones for being himself. Jones has been worse than his normal self. Plus, when the angst is directed at Hendry, you get people yelling at you to leave Hendry alone. You can't win. I just say let people write what they want as long as it's about the Cubs and fits within the rules of the board.
  6. Do you think Goony wrote the original quote and then argued against the quote? Wouldn't put it past him. :D
  7. Maybe you've never read my opinion on this matter. I don't boo Cubs players. I'll rip him in dicussion with other fans when talking about the Cubs, here or in the real world. I'll express my opinion on his game and talk about his terrible numbers to back up my opinion. But I don't have an audience with management, so there's no goal of "savaging him". Jacque Jones is not good. He's been really bad this year. He was a terrible signing. It was a predictable terrible signing. It pisses me off that he's on the team. But I'm not going out there to boo him, I'm not trying to make him cry, and I'm not trying to influence management (if I had access, I would, but it wouldn't be on this board).
  8. I actually haven't seen a ton of Pierre at bats this year, but I've always thought of him as a guy who will swing at anything within a few inches of the strike zone. Pitchers can really make you look bad with that type of approach.
  9. This doesn't hold up to any analysis. Hairston hasn't made the most of his chances in the lineup? Neifi has made less of his chances. You make a lot of claims, but don't back them up with anything substantial. Jerry's current OBP is 133 points higher than Neifi's. He was about 40 points higher last year. How is Neifi better in a limited role? Jerry has played all 3 OF positions for the Cubs, plus 2B. He's more versatile the Neifi, and a better hitter than Neifi. The only thing Neifi does better is play defense at SS, but that's hardly a quality to put one player over another. It seems pretty clear to me that you saw Neifi come up with a couple big hits, then let that cloud your perception of the rest of his time as a Cub. I'm not a big Hairston fan, but it's pretty clear he's better than Neifi.
  10. That's fine if you don't want to call Pierre terrible. Fact is, he is playing terribly right now. The numbers do tell the story. They are facts, not feelings, opinions, hunches or biases, they are facts. I'm more than willing to give him a chance past 20 games. That doesn't mean I can't say he hasn't been terrible his first 20 games, because the numbers prove he has. Why would you be afraid to admit that? If Murton was terrible his first 20 games, I'd say he was terrible. I wouldn't use that to judge his entire season. But it doesn't make any sense to ignore it.
  11. A) He's actually underperforming his bad numbers with terrible numbers. B) He whined about not be supported enough even though he sucks and insinuated that absentee Twins fans are more loyal than Cubs fans (you expect Cubs fans to not respond to that?) C) He said he's being pitched around and needs to be more patient but continues to flail at crap first pitches. D) HOW MANY FREAKING TIMES DO PEOPLE HAVE TO HEAR THAT COMPLAINTS ABOUT A PLAYER ARE IMPLICITLY COMPLAINTS ABOUT MANAGEMENT FOR EMPLOYING THAT PLAYER?
  12. This isn't a matter of differing opinions. You are complaining about people expressing their opinion, and you do it everytime they say something bad about one of your boys. Somebody posted an article that came up on ESPN.com, and then you go off accusing people of people homophobes for it.
  13. Do you realize you are whining about CUBS FANS ON A CUBS FANS MESSAGE BOARD MAKING FUN OF A CARDINALS PLAYER.
  14. No, not fair enough. The rules of the board are pretty clear that you don't take shots at other posters. We're making fun of Edmonds, not you.
  15. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the intent of the "Rivalries" forum. If I am, then please feel free to re-explain the rules and format to me. Rivalries doesn't mean, place where Cubs fans can't make fun of Cardinals. This is still a Cubs-centric website built and run by Cubs fans with a vast majority of Cubs fans as users.
  16. Edmonds would have made a great jerk from an 80's high school movie, jocks in half shirts were always the meanies. I like how it's okay for Edmonds to be a jerk in that chat because "we don't know the context of that site" and it's all about sarcasm and political incorrectness, but then we're all jerks for picking on Edmonds on this site, even though this site is all about picking on Edmonds. If he gets a free pass for being a jerk since it's part of his schtick, then we get a free pass for picking on Edmonds because it's part of our DNA.
  17. Jones was written off based on his career, not a bad streak.
  18. Jones can't be dealt till June anyway and I actually think you would find a market for him -- I believe a significant portion of his deal was in the signing bonus.... as long as the Cubs didn't try to pass that cost off on the acquiring team, I'm sure there would be a few GMs interested in JJ @ $3-4mil/year. Didn't the Royals make him the same 3 year / $15mil offer or even offer him more? There is not going to be a market for Jones, and Hendry isn't going to try and trade him. KC had an offer, it wasn't accepted, so they went elsewhere. They don't just have $15m laying around they want to spend. Jacque Jones of 3 years/$16M (2006-08 ) signed as a free agent 12/05 $4M signing bonus (paid 1/06 to 1/08 ) 06:$3M, 07:$4M, 08:$5M
  19. Why are people trying to claim he "flipped the bat"? He didn't flip the bat. The bat turned end over end, but from the time it enters the screen to the time it hits the ump, it's traveling in a straight line. It wasn't flipped into the air nonchalantly like so many ballplayers have done. It was a deliberate act to direct the bat at a high rate of speed at the umpire. It wasn't "flipped". The SS flips the ball to the 2B on a double play. You flip your buddy a can of beer when he's too lazy to get his own. You don't flip a bat and have it travel in that motion towards an ump. That's a throw, underhand or not.
  20. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060427sullyoncubs,1,7816354.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines You have to do a better job of reading the story and explaining what you read. There is no indication that it's even a thought in the Cubs minds. It's just an idea written down by Sullivan in an article about how Lee's injury could have lasting effects on many different people.
  21. Murton, Cedeno, Walker and Barrett aren't liabilities. They are all better than Pierre, at least so far this year. Ramirez, as bad as he's been, has been better. Pierre has been better than Jones and Perez, but that's not really an accomplishment.
  22. In the video I saw, he walks off screen, then you see the bat come flying back into the picture and hit the ump right in the chest. You don't see the throw itself, but it seems pretty clear he was throwing that with intent. Or maybe he was pulling a Roger and just getting the bat out of the way.
  23. I'd want a mid-first round pick, but I know it's not going to happen. I'd really like a 2nd rounder. But I think they can get the best deal by packaging him with some of our own picks. Or, if Indy wants him, send back Dallas Clark.
  24. You know that he won't be here three years. They just gave that to him to sign him. I still don't understand this line of thinking. A) Why did they feel the need to overpay to convince him to come? Are their negotiating skills and the "lure of playing for Dusty" completely worthless? B) The Cubs do not hand out money willy-nilly. They don't eat contracts. Sosa was the exception to the rule because they desperately wanted to get rid of him for more than just baseball reasons. They aren't going to cut Jones, they aren't going to pay for him to play for somebody else. C) He sucks so freaking much that it's going to be very difficult to trade him. D) Jones is actually exactly the type of player Hendry loves, and he's here for the duration. People have been talking about Hendry and Jones for a long time. It was predicted long ago. The talented athlete who is past his prime and doesn't have much in terms of real baseball skills is prototypical Hendry stuff. Jim wanted him. Jim likes him. Jim is going to keep him. Jim thinks he did a good thing by signing Jones. He didn't shrug his shoulders and settle for Jacque, thinking to himself, "Well, I'll be able to get rid of him in a year or two." Teams don't sign guys with the intent of trading them later. This isn't the NFL where you sign 7 years deals knowing full well the guy will only be there for 4. Jones has an albatross contract. He's going to be a Cub, and hurt the Cubs, for a long time.
