  1. Personally I think the contract year stuff with Maddux is kind of ridiculous. I think his improved performance due to his offseason workouts is a matter of self pride. Maddux was not satisfied with his performance the last couple of years and he did something about it, not because of it being a contract year. Maybe, maybe not. His agent has been all over the place talking money and possible destinations, so that sort of hints at the contract year concept. When/where has Boras been doing that? I haven't seen anything. He talked to the beat writers while they were in LA and talked about socal as a possible destination. There was an undocumented story on this board from somebody saying Mil was a possibility due to his brother being there. Not sure if that's true at all, but it would fit the mold of Boras's negotiating techniques (stories about every team being interested and offers from all over).
  2. Juan is going to have to earn an extension with his own production, not a theoretical ability to mentor Pie. He'll be getting way too much money to just be an example for good behavior.

  4. Alou part 2. If form holds, he'll be good again next year.
  5. and that very well could happen. he just needs to find out what Maddux did last off season! Get less fat? I don't think that's going to help Edmonds.
  6. If somebody offers him AJ Burnett money this offseason than the Cubs should let him go. But if he can come back and have a good remainder of the season, I believe they need to try and bring him back, at least on a 1 year deal.
  7. do you buy what I said about the calls on CPatt and Murton? no have you been to an eye doctor lately? seriously, Murton has gotten hosed on several calls as of late. I admire your desire to be a stand up guy about officiating, but how you can deny that some of the pitches Murton was called out on in LA and St. Louis were clearly balls is beyond me. I think this is just another case of perception not equalling reality. Murton isn't getting called out on pitches that should be balls because he's replacing Corey Patterson who swung at everything.

  9. The solution is obviously not as simple as you would make it seem. It would not be solved in a day, but it's been a problem for several years and the front office needs to start emphasizing the value of walks. It would help if they realized the value of walks and didn't carry themselves with a "a run scored with the help of a free pass is less manly than a run scored solely due to swinging the bat" attitude.
  10. I don't buy for a second that the Cubs low walk totals is due to umpires screwing them over. It's not a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. The Cubs aren't patient, and that damns them to bad offensive numbers. It's not the jersey, the logo, a curse or the umps. It's an oft-stated organizational philosophy that completely disregards the value of the walk. It's no accident.
  11. That doesn't make a lot of sense though, since Guzman has been just as unreliable, if not more. It's out of necessity, and nothing more. You're correct however, at some point, I'm hoping Hendry and Baker quit counting on anything from Prior or Wood. Define counting on. The fact is, the Cubs are very likely to get a significant amount of inning from both of these guys this year. 33 starts and 230 innings? No, obviously not. But they could still provide a lot to this team, and it would be foolish to deny yourself that help because you've grown sick of the injuries. Now, I think it was asinine to construct the team the way they have this year, completely ignoring the repeated offensive shortcomings and expecting defensive upgrades to carry the load. You should never count on your pitching to be so great that it carries and subpar lineup to the promised land. But that's not just a "Wood and Prior are unreliable" sentiment, that's a "don't put all your hopes on the most unpredictable and oft-injured component of any team".

  13. I'll eat them almost any way. Preferably, roasted and salted in shell. I crack them open and eat whatever is in there. Occasionally I'll get lazy and eat the whole shell. In NY, for years I could not find salted peanuts in the shell. The ballparks had unsalted only, as did the local grocery. But about 3 years ago they started stocking them and now they're everywhere.
  14. Yes Acquired INF Freddie Bynum from the A's in a three-team trade. Sent LHP John Koronka and a player to be named to Texas in the deal; optioned INF Ryan Theriot to Triple-A Iowa.
  15. I don't really care who hits leadoff. As long as the Cubs don't foolishly overpay due to the perceived "leadoff premium", or try and turn a player into something he is not capable of being. Ideally I'd like whichever non 3/4 hitter with the best OBP to hit leadoff.
  16. Mistake #1 was eating at Denny's. I've never had a bad time when eating at Denny's was involved. You're not black are you? I thought he was referencing the quality of the meal as opposed to the racist behavior at some of their locations. I don't know much about Westwood, or if that Denny's location has had similar problems as the ones involved in earlier disutes. Fun facts

  18. Not enough World Series rings.
  19. You compared their career path, which insinuates comparing them at similar ages. Lofton is going to be out of baseball in a year or two. You can't compare Pierre now with Lofton now.
  20. Lofton's power is a thing of the past. Only thing he does better than Pierre now is take walks. If you want to talk about the Lofton from 5 years ago, then yeah, he's a lot different from Pierre. Well if you are talking about career paths, you are talking about them at similar ages. It doesn't make any sense to say a 28 year old Pierre's career path is going to be the same as the 38 year old Lofton.
  21. Why would anybody compare Pierre to Kenny Lofton? I don't see much of a similarity at all. Other than the superficial (fast, black, lefthanded centerfielder), their games aren't much alike. Kenny was a significantly more well rounded player. Juan is all slap and run. Lofton hit homers, slugged well into the 400s nearly every year, and drew a lot more walks and strikeouts. Kenny exceeded a .400 OBP by his 2nd full season (age 26) and did it 3 more times in his career. He was .360 or higher every year until his age 34 season. For his career, one of his most similar comparisons, according to baseballreference.com, is Ken Griffey (Sr., not Jr.), and Damon is close behind. Pierre is Willie Wilson. There's no comparison here people. If there were, I would strongly advocate a 3-4 year contract.
  22. That just puts Marshall and Rusch back to back, which gives you the same problem of guys who might need to come out early.
  23. I'm actually sick of waiting. The NFL does a great job of capturing the attention of the masses all year long. They freaking had a live unveiling of next year's schedule. But I believe this is the latest we've waited for a draft, at least in a long time. It's usually in mid-April. I can't remember it ever being this late in the year. I thought it was always last weekend in April. Yep. 23-24th last year, 24th-25th in 04. I thought it was the 17th or so a couple years ago. Anyway, the Bears sign Manning to an offer sheet. http://www.chicagobears.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=15041
  24. No, they aren't the 2004 Cubs. But they are very similar. Week offense, with no patience, relying on pitching to carry them through. True, but on paper that offense looked devastating. Walker, Sosa, Alou, Ramirez, Lee, Patterson (before he fell of the earth).... But that's why they play the games. That's true. That's why they play, so let these team play!! I wouldn't agree this team has no patience, this team has WAY more patience at the plate than 2004 Cubs. Not really. They're already at the bottom for walks, and without Lee, will stay there all year. Either way, there's no reason to call people blind for feeling this team is in deep trouble.
