  1. Bingo. It has nothing to do w/ Ks or "he saved us last year" (and boy, is that getting old around here). People resent starters with multi-year deals for big(ger) money who are hitting below the Mendoza-line. And Burnitz wasn't as bad last year as Jones has been this year. Plus we have one more year of frustration. I think K's play a huge role, as well as the constant praise he gets from not only Dusty, but the radio people as well (Santo especially loves him). And lowered expectations always play a part. Plus, many fans just don't realize how bad he is.
  2. I don't think booing Jones serves any purpose whatsoever.
  3. I would suggest just looking at his career at not hoping he can have a career year (a cubs management specialty - that is hoping for career years, not getting them). Guys are not defined by their career years, they are defined by their careers. And Jones has had a long enough career and is at an age where it's perfectly reasonable to make assumptions about his abilities. It's not a matter of optimistic or pessimistic. It's a matter of realistic. Jones is not the .300/.341/.511 hitter he was 1 year, in 2002. Jones is much closer to the .268/.322/.443 hitter he's been from 2003-2005 combined, or maybe the .278/.326/.455 hitter he's been throughout his mediocre career.
  4. Unfortunately, neither does Hendry. Nor do the announcers for that matter. They were talking about Jones first pitch swinging and making lots of outs and one said "that's not Jacque Jones". Yes it is. It baffles me how much baseball people like to pat each other on the back. There is no such thing as a bad baseball player (except for a guy who strikes out too much, no matter how productive he is) when these guys talk about each other. Everybody is just great and brings so much to the table. I realize that compared to the general public, these guys are the greatest ballplayers you could possibly conceive. But these guys compete against one another, so they should be compared against one another. The worst ones actually are bad major leaguers. Guys who have been around for a while but have consistently put up poor numbers actually are poor major leaguers.
  5. Tony Clark is very inexpensive. Around $1M for 2006. He does have a NTC though. But what do we do with Clark when Lee comes back? Clark can only play 1b, and he's not going to get much time with Lee in front of him. Doesn't seem to be a fit for the Cubs IMO. Bench players don't all have to be midgets who can't hit a lick but can run and play 5 positions. It is legal to have a hitter on the bench.
  6. Everyone decided he was a bum before he got here. They weren't basing it on two crappy games or 25 crappy at-bats. Furthermore gocubs1982, why are you acting as if all the fans act as 1? You're saying that 40,000 people collectively booed him from game 3 on, and that those same people went to all the other home games, booing whenever possible, and then those same 40,000 collectively asked for a curtain call. I think what's more likely is about 10-15 drunk idiots said some rude things out there, Jones heard them, and lumped them together with people who booed after he repeatedly flailed at first pitches that were outside only to ground out to 2nd, and decided all Cubs fans treated him like crap from the beginning.
  7. I don't see anything wrong with sulley's post (I was actually surprised a bit with the direction he took it).
  8. ab's or plate appearances?
  9. Oh screw you, man. They were wining and didn't draw...and their fans are the greatest? I'm done with Jones  After a couple quotes and below average play ... 20 games into the season. Ok... "A couple quotes" is quite the sugar coated version of the story. He's whining and complaining about Cubs fans while pining for the good ole days of no fans in Minnesota.
  10. If they dumped Bynum off the 40 man, I'd like to see it. But the guy doesn't have much of a history of hitting.
  11. .258/.343 (8BB/11K) Murt is the only player on this entire team (other than Lee) who could put up a pretty solid OBP even when he is hitting .258. Very impressive patience at the plate. :D Aram could too. Not sure about that. Aram don't like to walk. The last time his AVG was low for a long time (as a Cubs in 2003), he hit .259 with a .314 OBP. In 2002 he hit .234 with a .279 OBP. His OBP is generally just a little more than .050 points higher than his average, which means that with a .258 AVG, he's probably be no better than a .310-.315 OBP, which is bad.
  12. Wow, this keeps getting more and more pathetic the longer it goes on. Shouldn't be suprised though, par for the course. I guess this is why this part of the forum is here.
  13. He's a human. He admits that he probably shouldn't have done it (and handled it much differently when given the opportunity last night), which is more than some guys do. How dare you accuse him of mortality. Pujols is no mere human, subject to the rules and regulations of mankind.
  14. He's a human. He admits that he probably shouldn't have done it (and handled it much differently when given the opportunity last night), which is more than some guys do. He doesn't sound like he regrets it all. It sounds like he feels nobody should be allowed to ask or comment on his behavior, and that he had plenty of time to plan his retalliation. That completely rips apart the "heat of the moment" excuse.
  15. All those numbers mean is that he is due for a hot streak to get back to career norms. The team has been winning despite his struggles, so hopefully they continue winning when he comes around. Same canbe said for Aramis Ramirez. No, the same cannot be said. As bad as it is, he's still not that far off from expectations, which were low. Ramirez can be expected to get on a hot streak to get back to norms, because he's far below normal. Jones is just a crappy RF who is playing a little more crappy than normal.
  16. I don't think anybody expects him to be Barry Bonds. And I don't think anybody should be happy with a faster Burnitz. Burnitz led the Cubs to some of the worst RF production in the league last year. Right now Jones is worse than that. He's dangerously close to Neifi territory (although Neifi has been even worse than he normally is). People should expect more out of Jones, and they should expect a heck of a lot more out of RF. But that's where Hendry's misguided focus hurts the team. It's not Jones's fault he sucks (though it is his fault he keeps swinging at crappy first pitches).
  17. He'll turn 28 in the preseason. If all they can get is a 3rd round, then no way should they trade him. He's a starting RB, not a nickel back. There are several teams on the bottom half of the rushing list who fancy themselves as contenders and could be in need of a quality runner. I wonder if Dallas Clark's name has entered the talks between CHI and IND.
  18. I would love to get value for Jones right now. He's a nice RB, but his value is at its highest since he was drafted. He's got 6 seasons under his belt, though as a part-timer most of those years, he's only endured maybe 4 years worth of carries. And I don't think it's realistic to think he'll get any better than he is now, which is well below the elite backs. If teams are only thinking about trading the Bears a 3rd round pick, then no thanks. But if they can get serious upgrades elsewhere, I'm fine with Benson and Peterson backed up, possibly, by a later round rookie. I didn't want them to draft a RB last year anyway, but now that they have, they should make the best of it and use him as the featured RB.
  19. I used to think that, but then I watched the team collapse in 2004 and 2005 (not to mention 2003) and I fail to see how Dusty could be a good motivational manager (in comparison to other managers) and allow that to happen.
  20. Jacque is hitting .209/.271/.442 He's got 12 K's and 3 BB's. Yes, he has 2 big homeruns, but that doesn't change the fact that he's sucked this year, continuing a career of suckitude and bringing it to new depths. Then again, it doesn't excuse ridiculous booing by the fans. But then, yet again, I don't think he should be out whining about how much more supportive Twins fans were, and talking about how nobody is giving him pitches to hit then swinging at the first pitch out of the zone following 4 pitch walks. Oh, and I don't think it makes a lot of sense to "give Hendry credit" for having a plan. I think he had a plan. I think it was a ridiculously misguided plan, with poor implementation. But he had a plan. That doesn't mean he's a good GM by any stretch though.
  21. Couldn't they have reported it accurately from the start?
  22. Pierre? He's been arbitration eligible for a few years. The Cubs had to start the arbitration process with him this year before signing him. He's a free agent this offseason. In order to get compensation for losing him, you'd have to offer him arbitration. His choice then would be to accept it, or reject and sign somewhere else, at which point the Cubs would get compensation.
