  1. What? I'm not umpire techniques expert, but I can't see how you are even close to right here. You never see baseball umps look around for help before they make a call. They make what they thing is the right call. Then if another ump thinks differently they talk about it. There is no hesitation, and no way would it be just a split second delay if they glance over their shoulder for help. They make the call, then deal with the problems if somebody disagrees.
  2. While I would love to see it....does anyone think we'll actually see this staff for even one full time through the rotation this year? much less several turns through? Just curious if I'm the only one who doubts we'll see all 5 of those guys at the same time for any extended period of time. I'm pretty sure they can get 1 time through, and wouldn't be surprised if they go 5. But they're going to have to get Glendon Rusch in there sometime to mix it up with the cra(pp)fty lefty.
  3. Lots of people on this board have.
  4. I don't get why they announce when they will make an announcement.
  5. I had great seats (free) to last night's Mets game, and there's still a significant blind spot all the way down the LF line.
  6. Pre-injury, he posted 134, 130, 107, 129 ERA+. That's not too terribly shabby. But his last full season was that 107. The 129 was in less than half a season. Wood, who is a year younger, put up a 133 in his last full season. I still believe you have to try Wood in the rotation when he comes back, as he's still a little younger and has been a little more dominating when able to pitch. I'm not begging for Miller to go to the pen, but I think he's a better candidate than Wood. By the way, for all the Wood and Prior bashing, let's just look at Miller, who has 1 major league season with 200+ innings and is older than both.
  7. Um, I most certainly will not "get over it". Please don't ask me to. Why don't you whine about water being wet while you're at it. Neifi is on the team, with a 2 year contract no less. He's not going to ride the pine for 162+ games. I didn't sign him to that contract. If the government decides to take 70% of your income, are you going to simply smile and just "get over it". I like the fact that water is wet, so there is nothing to whine about there. But, if it was dry, you bet I'd be in line to complain. Just because you are pleased as punch that Neifi is on the team for the next two years doesn't mean we should all conform to how you feel. It's unreasonable to even think this should be the case. The difference is water always has been, and always will be wet. There's nothing you can do about it (and there's nothing you should do about it), unless you want to talk about turning it into its gas or solid forms, but that's another topic. Starting Neifi Perez is not something that has to be. You complain about something you want to see changed. Telling people to stop complaining about stuff they want to see changed is fascist, or something else that isn't good.
  8. I'm still not convinced the rotation is the best place for Miller. His last full season wasn't even that good.

He's not going to ride the pine for 162+ games. Seriously BBB, the Cubs aren't good, just deal with it and stop complaining. There are starving children in China who would love to have a team as bad as the Cubs to cheer on. Oh wait, that doesn't make any sense. Neither does telling somebody to "get over it" about Neifi playing. Just because the Cubs made a dumb decision in the past doesn't mean we have to accept dumb decisions on a daily basis.
  10. I don't buy it. I'd love for someone to prove to me that the Cubs wouldn't have scored many more runs last year if Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez had better hitters hitting 1/2 in the order all season long. That's a different question. If they had better hitters, the lineup would be better, no matter the order. The problem is if you have sinkholes like Neifi in the lineup, anywhere, it'll hurt. One thing to consider is with DLee coming up with the bases empty so often, they likely pitched differently to him than if there were men on.
  11. If there was 2 outs and it was a pop fly, the runner would have scored. I don't see how anybody can have a problem with the right call being made.
  12. I know there has been extensive research done on this, but I just find it hard to believe that batting order doesn't affect a game. How does Neifi possibly batting 5 times and Murton and Barrett possible batting 4 times not affect the game? How is Derrek Lee coming up with the bases empty the same as him coming up with a man on? Now maybe over the course of a season the numbers would tend to even out. But I'll never be convinced that the batting order does not affect a single game. I don't think anybody ever said it can't affect a single game. You could have a day when your 5, 6, 7 and 8 hitters get hot and score a bunch of runs together. You may not have scored that much if they were in a different order. The point is, Neifi shouldn't be anywhere in the lineup. The fact that he's probably going to bat 2nd doesn't piss me off nearly as much that he'll bat at all.
  13. She's written about living on the northside and hating having Wrigley in the neighborhood as well. Which explains her ridiculous opening to the article.
  14. I find it very cool that I'll be able to attend back to back Bears games for the first time in my life. Although the Meadowlands ain't that cool. The question is, do I road trip up to Foxboro to see the third straight? And of those 3 games, how many, if any, will be moved to primetime Sunday night? The favorites to move to the night game on those 3 nights will probably be: Week 10: Chi @ NYG (assuming both teams are good) NYJ @ NE WAS @ PHI DEN @ OAK Week 11: IND @ DAL MIN @ MIA (culpepper vs former team) OAK @ KC PIT @ CLE SD @ DEN Week 12: CHI @ NE PHI @ IND PIT @ BAL OAK @ SD I think there's a good chance at least one of those three road games moves to Sunday night.
  15. Batting 2nd doesn't really matter. Batting order has been shown to not really affect runs scored over the long haul. What matters is who is in the lineup. And Neifi has no business being in any lineup. Best case scenario is he has a fluke couple games when he does start, but that Dusty doesn't turn those fluke good games into the scores of terrible games by playing him every day. Neifi had a great April last year. But he sucked overall, and his non-April numbers were depressingly terrible.
  16. Looking at the photos up on the website, it looks like the seats on the right hand side of the bleacher boxes will not be able to see the extreme right center field corner, up against the wall. I think most bleacher seats have a blind spot somewhere along the fence. You might miss a catch on the warning track, but you can miss those from a lot of spaces.
  17. I think the Cubs would be starting Rusch with or without Prior. They like Glendon. They like paying Glendon and they like playing Glendon. Why? I do not know, maybe Hendry and Baker's brains are as fragile as Prior. That's what's annoying. The Cubs demoted Williams for a bad spring, but never even considered the same for Rusch who was just as bad. Williams is young and unrproven, so they weren't sure if he could maintain that bad spring into the regular season. Glendon is proven, so they know he can maintain his bad spring in the regular season. Or something like that.
  18. I believe it was just two years ago that he missed a significant portion of the season with a knee injury. 2003, missed half the year, wasn't any good the rest of the year.

  20. Cause he's a freaking coddled momma's boy who probably doesn't even have input on 80% of his household expenses.
  21. Is Rusch available?
  22. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/multimedia/index.jsp?sid=t451 Is it on or no? Games for Apr 6, 2006 Time ET Game Watch No media available for today.
  23. Why can't they beat up on the division? @ GB is winnable, Detroit @ home is winnable, and playing in Minnesota in their coaches third game at the helm is winnable. The toughest game might be @ Detroit late in the year, but if they are out of it by then, that could be a pushover. I think they have a chance to be 3-0 heading into the Seattle game, they should be no worse than 2-1. They could be 5-1 heading into the bye week, without luck. Then they get the 49ers at home coming off the bye. Miami at home is tough, but winnable. The three straight road games is tough, but it's nice to have the Jets in the middle. I think they should be 6-5 or better heading into the week 13 matchup against Minnesota. Then it's a matter of finishing off that last stretch, with 3 home games, including against Tampa in the middle of December.
