  1. I was with some Philly fans this weekend and man, have they given up on that team. They are truly sick of it, and want to blow the whole thing up. And I think ownership is sensitive to the lack of interest in the team now. I think Burrell or Abreu could be had. Well being realistic, Pie isn't going anywhere. Neither is Hill in all probability. Is their a package we could possibly put together good enough to net either one? The answer is definitely yes. And I would not have a problem trading Pie and/or Hill.
  2. they are listing the roster now
  3. I don't believe it has anything to do with caring. I just don't think they are capable of being any better. That's the depressing part. Certain players, to me, look like they dont care. Maybe it is just lack of talent, but they almost seem unwilling to work the pitcher. They hack and hack and don't make adjustments. New coaching staff next year plz. Again, I don't think it's caring. That's the type of player they are, and the organization likes it that way.

  6. Pierre has been at least as bad as Jones. Then you have Neifi, Hairston, Mabry and Blanco who have all been awful all season long and are getting the bulk of the bench at bats. And every other bench "contributor" has been just as awful. Of guys with 15 or more at bats the Cubs have 7 with an OPS of 617 or lower (most are lower than 600).
  7. I wouldn't say that's the alternative. The most realistic alternative is to follow them, but not blindly. I find it very difficult to just start rooting for a team I have no emotional investment in. I think if I lived in any city other than St. Louis I could "adopt" the hometown team as my "second" team and root for that team as well as the Cubs...alas, rooting for the cards would be like rooting for Clubber Lang in Rocky...you hate them...they aren't nice...you dont' like their fans...but deep down you know they're probably going to do all the right things to kick your arse. (I hope arse fits within the family board guidelines) I've lived in NY over a decade and still haven't come close to such an adoption.
  8. I find one of the easiest things to do during a game is to turn the channel. But one of the hardest is to refuse the urge to turn back.

  10. I don't even bother pretending I won't watch.
  11. I can't accept that....there must be another way... You could buy the team and force the change yourself. Or, you could stay a fan but just vent your frustration with the stupid philosophy whenever you get a chance. Guess which plan I've used.
  12. go big or go home
  13. Sarge lost that job, but inexplicably stayed on. Now it's Clines' problem. They won't lose their jobs over this issue until the powers that be see it as an issue that needs to be dealt with. Plate discipline is a foreign concept to the Cubs front office, unless you consider plate discipline to be the discipline to swing at anything remotely close to the plate. It's an organizational problem, not just a single coach problem. Please don't take this as a sign that I like Clines and want him to stay aboard.
  14. We've given up less than 7 runs 2 times in the last 6 games. We've scored more than 2 runs 1 time in the last 6 games. And yet we stand at 14-11. As I said it could be far worse! It could be, and it will be if things don't change for the better really soon. The overall record is a nice distraction from the troubles that are hounding this team, but that doesn't mean those troubles don't exist.
  15. I'm frustrated, too, and I think as little of Dusty as anyone else. But changing the batting order won't help much. No matter how they're ordered, they're still the same players. Hendry (and to some extent, ownership) are to blame for what we're seeing now. Exactly. This was a poorly constructed group of hitters, it's not the order. Lee's abscence makes it worse, but really it's just exposing the weaknesses that were already here. Walker's surprising .357/.439/.500 makes up for a lot of what Lee would have brought. This has been a team with a weak offense for several years now, and it's had the same problems year after year, no walks, and low OBP. And to fix it this year, they decided to go with less power. Until they recognize the flaws in their strategy, and implement a plan to fix them, this offense will always struggle to score runs, regardless of weather, winds or health.
  16. What does that mean? Means that he came advertised as the next great thing but can't get it together at the major league level. I know Guzman's sample size is small to this point, but I see similarities nonetheless. Great arm strength but too much nibbling, too many walks, little confidence. That's about the most ridiciulously premature giving up on a prospect I've ever seen. Pitchers don't show up with all their guns blazing. It's very rare for guys to have much success in their first few games, and it's not rare at all for them to give up lots of walks, hits and runs.
  17. I've never understood wearing the visiting team's colors to a game. It's fine to root for your team, but why make yourself a target? Cubs fans are more docile than Philly fans, but I've seen a beer or two thrown at fans wearing the wrong hat before. I've never understood the people who view visiting fans as targets. I've been to several stadiums wearing Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks colors. The most I've dealt with is a disparaging word or three. But it's usually the pathetic cowards in a group of cowards who choose to throw something at the smallest opposing fan they can find.
  18. Um....NOOOOO. I'd prefer to not increase Guzman's chances of getting injured. He should have never started the inning. Um, he only had 90 pitches and was pitching well. He's a big boy, only a few months younger than Z... not like he's a 19-year old out there. He's a big boy with a terrible injury history who struggled along in all but 2 innings this outing.
  19. Why not? That's his job. It's the 6th and the Cubs were already down 4. They haven't scored 4 in a game since last Friday. You don't waste roster spots with extra relievers unless you are going to use them.
  20. I believe it has a lot to do with their ridiculously over aggressive approach. Soft-tossers get you out by having you swing at their pitch. The Cubs, as a rule, will swing at any pitch.
  21. He was a good option in Oregon's offense but was pretty inconsistent. Better receiver than blocker. This is part of the problem with TEs. All of them are better at something and worse at the other. There are a very small number of all around TEs. For the most part they provide a limited role in any system. Unless you can get the best of the best, it's wasteful to spend high picks on them.
  22. Nobody said that. he gave an example of Dusty not giving young players a chance and chose a vet instead by saying Dubois had a great April and Hollandworth a bad one, thus implying, if not explicitly stating, that Dubois was benched in favor of Hollandworth after said April. maybe not in so many words, but he did say that. Saying he played one guy over another isn't the same as saying he stopped getting any time. If one guy gets preferential treatment and more chances, the other guy is still going to get some PT.
