"Putting something up for sale" can drive down the price, because potential buyers know the owner wants to get rid of the item. GMs talk all the time about not shopping guys, but they'll listen for offers. Unlike most businesses, a ballclub carries an emotional premium for rich guys who want to compete, and win in full view of the public.

He's shown me plenty in the minors, and hasn't enough opportunity in the Majors to show me much of anything. I don't know if Hill is going to be great, good or even average, but I'd like to see him get more of a chance. It's sink or swim time. I agree with you. Don't forget he's 28 years old. He's as old as Kerry Wood for god sakes! So now you're just making up ages?

Struggling with control is part of the struggles of a young pitcher. It's not worth the argument because you haven't made a lick of sense if you insistence that Rusch is the only option.

The Bears actually did something like that once. I forget the specific year, but they were interested in Mark Carrier and one other player (I forget who). So they went to each player's agent with an offer and told the agents that whoever accepted the offer first would be drafted. Carrier accepted the offer first and was drafted. That is different. Teams do that with the #1 pick a lot. And with the Bears pick it's not like they offered 5th rounders the chance to be drafted in the 1st if they agreed to a cheap deal. They were deciding between two appropriately slotted players.

I don't want Rusch starting tonight, but again who else do we have? What do we do Bring up Hill for another walk filled start and send him back down? I mean what choice do we have... You have the choice of calling up the kids and actually giving them a chance to work through struggles. It's pretty simple really. Rusch is not the only option.

Bias against young players. A crappy veteran can be crappy as much as he wants and people will always want him starting over a kid who might struggle.

If that happens, I honestly believe he would wind up dead in a hotel room somewhere. We're talking about baseball players, not tough guys. This isn't the mob.

Sounds like they're pretty determined to take Bonds down. Sounds like a fallback defense option by a defense lawyer. People have said from the beginning this was all about Bonds and trying to keep him from the record. Yet every week somebody else takes a fall.

I still can't understand why people thought he'd come back so quickly after having a cast on his wrist.

But the point is he shouldn't have been picked 13th. He should have been picked about 140th. Maybe there's a nice list of guys picked around the 13th pick that turned out good, but that doesn't mean you can just throw any name at the 13th spot and say he's got the same chance as all the rest.

Two $12+ million free agent signings? I doubt it. That would be a SLG team with no OBP, and the Cubs would be back to the problem of lots of solo homeruns. You'd have to slot Jones over to center and Murton into right to keep at least 2 reasonably priced players on the roster to offset all the big ticket items. In that case Murton is the only realistic leadoff option as everybody but DLee would be a threat for a sub .330 OBP. -
He'd still play pepper with the pitcher, 2nd baseman and 1st baseman.

.050 more points in OBP, and he'd be coming out of Petco and into a more hitter friendly environment.

In a word, no. Carlos Lee has never in his career had 35+ HR and 100+ RBI. He's terribly overrated, especially by Cubs fans who think his success vs the Cubs makes him something special. Career OPS+ of 111, high of 123 at 28. He turns 30 this year and a 4-5 year contract will take him well past his prime, which wasn't all that special to begin with. He'll be a classic case of getting overpaid for a team stat (RBI, which he doesn't have a good track record with anyway - only 2 seasons of 100) and long past his best days. -
The team is back below .400 right now. I said a couple days ago that if there was any hope, they had to win now. Playing .500 until the cavalry shows up won't be enough. The Cubs would now have to play .700 ball to get back to .500 overall by the All Star Break. They've have to play .617 ball just to get to 52-53 by the trading deadline. If they play .600 ball until the end of the season, they'd finish at 85-77, probably with no hope for the playoffs. They have to play .644 ball to get 90 wins. That's a pace for 104 wins, which this team was never close to being. It isn't technically over. But time is running out quickly, and a couple of series wins now and again isn't going to get this team where it needs to go.

I know that's what the staff at Baseball America suspects, but that might not be the case. Samardzija wasn't guaranteed to be there in the 5th round. It's possible they're just very high on Colvin. But everybody was predicting that's what they'd do. I think it's pretty hard to come up with a different storyline than what Jon is laying out.
