Yup, this sounds exactly like they just don't want to technically take the shot on Joe. I would not shed a tear at all if Maddon WAS actually fired, but that they're treading so carefully with this just gets my doom boner going in that it makes me think they don't want the fans getting surly over both firing the WS manager AND having a disappointing offseason. Like, they WANT to fire him, but they don't want the extra fan blowback. Plus the PR hit they're going to take when Russell gets brought back, just to complete the trifecta.
