    If you want to get extra depressed, think about how some of the players that the Cubs didn't want to give up for him are potentially going to be some of the reasons why they've decided they can't afford Harper.

    They would if they believe he's permanently broken and want to get KB level assets for a player who's never going to be KB again. If they don't think that, then there's absolutely no reason to trade a player of his caliber right now unless they're getting someone they believe to be better right this minute in return. Bryant for Yelich then?

    I too hope that this year's baller FA class is inexplicably dragged down in cost like last year's FA class was dragged down because it sucked, and because teams didn't want to spend too much in the face of the baller FA class that is happening RIGHT NOW.

    Eh...some of the results haven't been good. But how many people at the time those decisions were made thought they were bad? Sometimes the right decisions don't pan out. I don't know what the story with Hickey is, and having to replace him after a year surely isn't ideal, but it definitely seems out of the ordinary and not something that can necessarily be pinned on something Theo should have foreseen. Theo's next presser:

    Yup, this sounds exactly like they just don't want to technically take the shot on Joe. I would not shed a tear at all if Maddon WAS actually fired, but that they're treading so carefully with this just gets my doom boner going in that it makes me think they don't want the fans getting surly over both firing the WS manager AND having a disappointing offseason. Like, they WANT to fire him, but they don't want the extra fan blowback. Plus the PR hit they're going to take when Russell gets brought back, just to complete the trifecta.

    I almost feel like the FO wants to go in a different direction with the manager but don't want to fire the coach who won the franchises first championship in 108 years. Yeah it seems like they’re trying to smoke Joe out with this move Yup, this sounds exactly like they just don't want to technically take the shot on Joe.
