  1. Shhh...it's all part of his cover as a seemingly harmless leadoff hitter.
  2. I think it was a Saturday Fox game...it was definitely in May though. No, I think it was a Sunday WGN game. And I also believe that it was Mother's Day, just like it was Mother's Day when Sammy got beaned by Solomon Torres. It was also Mother's Day when the wind was blowing out at Wrigley in 2004 and the Cubs and Cards had a homer-fest that ended up getting wiped out by rain. That day has been a very strange one in Cub history. IIRC, that was a cold day as well and the RF for the Cards ended up hurting himself pretty badly...his name escapes me... maybe Eli Marrero ? That's the one. Ended up getting shipped to Atlanta that offseason in the deal that brought Ray King to STL, IIRC. Alou had two homers in that aborted game and I think Edmonds did as well. It was 11-9 Cardinals in the 4th when the game was called.

  4. I won't care either way. We'll have won the damn World Series.

  6. And then they immediately end their slumps or have career years on the South Side? I do see your point that he likes guys with low value. Of course with that payroll, you sort of have to do that.
  7. I agree with naming Murton the starting LF for sure and Cedeno the SS if we don't get Tejada, but remember that Atlanta only played all those young players because their regulars were ravaged by injury.

You trying to say he's not athletic? Have you seen him?
  9. Ok, do the Sox look at what the Cubs might want and just chase after those guys lately, or what? Tejada, Kotsay...
  10. The mayors office. I wouldn't even be that surprised.
  11. That was the end of the 2001 playoff run no matter what the standings said after that. Sub in Bill Mueller for Ron Coomer in all those June-August games and we make the playoffs for sure.
  12. I don't care if Hendry overpays if Tejada gets us to the playoffs.

How can anyone think that an event that Greg Raymer can be the world champion of is a sport? :?
  14. Wow, sign him back up!
  15. We all know that Jenks was good because he lit his arm on fire. We need to teach our young relievers how to do that.
  16. I agree that Kotsay would fit as an OF, but I don't want him in the number 2 slot... Walker
  17. Cubs and Sox head to head for Tejada, huh? This could be interesting...
  18. Bad enough the Sox trade their very worst starter and get one that's better, but if they get Tejada I am going to punch something (preferably a White Sox fan when they rub it in my face).
  19. How many runs did KW score? How is that relative? He is the one who put the team together. Nor did I say it took 11 men to win the WS which is what I am responding to. Frankly, I'm surprised how some of you are completely discounting what he did last year by calling it pure luck. Sour Grapes. Some of it was luck however most teams that win the WS are lucky. So KW deserves no credit for building the WS roster and hiring the manager? Wasn't it a batboy or something that told Guillen to pinch hit Blum in Game 3 of the World Series? (I definitely heard Guillen say this in an interview on ESPN) Sign him to a contract because he helped win a title!
  20. If Burnitz had hit 45 home runs and hit .300 in RF for the Cubs in 2005, would that make signing him when you could have gotten a much more dependable Alou back for just a little more a smart move? If Neifi somehow hits .285 next season with a .350 OBP and 15 home runs at short, does that make signing him to a 2 year, 5 million deal after having a sub-.300 OBP in 2005 any smarter? If we traded DLee for Jose Reyes, scored 80-100 runs fewer than 2005, and won the World Series anyway behind career years from Wood, Williams, Rusch and Novoa, would Hendry be smart for making that move? I'm not saying Kenny Williams is Forrest Gump up there, but the White Sox's championship this season was earned by eleven men: those Sox pitchers that all had great years.
  21. Bulls lose 100-97. Still encouraging that we hung in right to the end despite Shaq's dismantling of our defense. That was something we could never seem to do last year.
  22. Wow you won't let this thing die will you?
  23. His risks paid off and he deserves credit IMO. To me, it's that simple. If Hendry took some risks and they paid off he deserves credit for them too. I agree with YearofDaCubs, this is a big issue for me. I value GMs for their ability to find the diamonds in the rough with no predictable course for success. If it's about identifying the most productive player regardless of salary or other teams (who can also statistically identify the same player), then have a computer do the work and maybe a sales guy on the front end to talk to the players. Ndistops stated five good moves Williams made. Are they all lucky? Williams deserves more credit than that regardless of his track record and even if it's one year. It's not even like they were the wild card, they had the best record in the AL. Actually, I stated five moves that we on NSBB would have blasted Jim Hendry for making (and rightfully so). The fact that all five of those moves turned into gold does not say as much about Williams as it does about the fact that even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while, even a broken clock is right twice a day, all the other similar metaphors that have been used already in this thread.
