  1. 8 losses. 5 overtimes. 26 points. I can't even take this anymore.
  2. I own a "They Gone! Since 1917" shirt that I bought for fun last summer. Naturally it's worth nothing now. Plz buy a shirt that notes the Cubs haven't won since 1908. Now. I'm working on it.
  3. Thirded. I never have a right to whine ever again if they win because so many have unfortunately lived their whole life through without seeing it. :?
  4. For which team is pitching not the key? Other teams rely on pitching as well. And other teams have weak offenses. But few have the chance to be as good as the Cubs good be if all goes well. And few have less reason to believe that all will go well in the pitching staff than the Cubs do, as well.
  5. I'm not Vance, but Philly would be stupid not to accept Williams, Pie and Hill for Abreu. Boston's in a different spot. They don't have to deal Manny, since they can afford him, but if they can fleece a team, they'll deal him. My guess is it would take Lee, Williams, Cedeno, Hill and Harvey with the Cubs picking up at least 75% of his salary. And I wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pole. Did I read that right? A month ago the BoSox were all anxious to deal Manny, Clement, and cash to the O's for Tejada. But now from the Cubs they'd demand Lee, Williams, Cedeno, Hill and Harvey? I thought it was supposedly a Manny/cash for Tejada deal straight up and never heard Clement's name. Of course I could be wrong.
  6. The Cubs don't eat salary. They were adamently opposed to the idea until the Sosa situation came up. Unfortunately, the Cubs like Jones. Hendry likes Jones. He's not going to trade him. He didn't sign him with any intention to trade him. Jones could repeat his mediocre career stats every year and Hendry would be ecstatic. He wanted an athletic RF, not a productive one. Hendry needed a RF this year and had to give Jones a 3-year deal to match other offers. If Pie is ready next year, he will be the athletic and productive RF that Hendry wants and Jones will be traded. As much as Hendry likes Jones, he is gaga over Pie. This is a good point. Jacque Jones may fit the Jim Hendry mold pretty well, but the fact is that Hendry likes Pie as much or more than he liked Corey Patterson. Once he feels Pie is ready I'm sure Felix will get every chance to get a starting job.
  7. I thought they were going to try and lock-up Pierre long term. This doesn't mean they can't. They've done this lots of times _ avoid arbitration and then sign a guy to a multiyear deal in spring training. they did it last season with Aramis, and nearly gave me a heart attack when they waited til opening day to sign him long term to that goofy contract. BTW, Bruce, has there been any indication of Aramis wanting to exercise that opt out clause? Ramirez repeatedly has said he wants to stay with the Cubs. There's been no talk of him opting out, but if he hits 40 HR and drives in a ton of runs with an OBP of .356, all bets might be off. I'm sorry Mr. Miles. I understand that you write for an established newspaper. How do you know what OBP is? Nicely played. Stick with the Daily Herald, the only paper in town that routinely gives OBP figures in stories and dares to dip in to the dangerous waters of sabermetrics. No way. You should be more like the guys on ESPN 1000 and talk a lot about pitchers' W-L records. RUSS ORTIZ 2003 CY YOUNG AWARD WINNER DUDE HE WON 20 GAMES OMG LOLZ!!!!!11111!!!!ONEONE
  8. I own a "They Gone! Since 1917" shirt that I bought for fun last summer. Naturally it's worth nothing now.
  9. I agree with Truff re: not reading too much into it. Aaron Rodgers didn't get a single Division I offer out of high school, and LaDainian Tomlinson was ignored by just about everybody except for WAC teams because he didn't start till his senior year.
  10. Well, my prediction of "No one will pick the Cubs to win the Central" was clearly off.
  11. My best friend, who happens to be a Cubs fan, has that shirt. When I asked him why, he said, "Well, it's true!"
  12. I can't imagine, with a name like "Pujols", where they might come up with a joke to put on a shirt. :P
  13. It is 12, SSR. BSU does lose as Flames mentioned, giving up 6 points in a row after having the game tied. Still no road wins on the Cards' MAC resume, as well as knocking them from contention for a top-2 slot in the pathetic MAC West.
  14. What did I say? 7 losses by 23 points. Two blatant fouls on Quinn's last play go uncalled and ND loses another one. It's like rooting for the Cubs all over again.
  15. This is interesting. I didn't realize that ND ever really had a shot at Mustain. I'll trade him for Jimmy Clausen, though.
  16. JH convinced teams to give him guys with upside for nothing. KW would, if this trade went through, have convinced Philly to give him an already established star for slightly more than nothing. I don't know if that would speak more to KW or whoever Philly's GM is, but it's definitely not quite the same as what JH did in 2003.
  17. I say WV by 13. You would think. But ND has a habit of playing just well enough to lose by single digits in the conference this year. The only question tonight is what big possession will Notre Dame screw up to lose the game in the closing seconds.
  18. Over/Under for how many points ND loses by to WV tonight: 4.
  19. All of ND's expected recruits appear to have signed except for one. ESPN has them listed as the number 5 class in the country. Very nice for Year 1 of full-on Weis recruiting.
  20. No possible way. Refuse to take anything less than Prior from us, then gladly take a 50 year old pitcher and a strikeout artist who's had two good seaons this millennium, AND throw in a prospect? That would be one of the most lopsided deals in history.
  21. I was deeply impressed with the Bulls tonight, particularly how Kirk Hinrich led that amazing comeback and how Tyson Chandler got (almost) every big rebound, including giving the Bulls a whopping four chances to hit a three-pointer on that last possession. Even though this ended up an L, I think the team took a big step tonight. Let's not forget, this road trip is still very much a success if the Bulls split the next six games, and they're capable of winning up to five of the games (under no circumstances do I see the team beating Phoenix). I'm still confident about the Bulls' chances if they can get out of this road trip bloodied but unbowed.
  22. It's amazing, Louisville was ranked as high as 4th this season, and they might not even make the conference tournament in the Big East. Conference is STACKED. Final Four last year + get most of your good players back (exception F. Garcia) + C-USA to Big East = no top-12 conference finish. Last week, Seton Hall, a middle of the road Big East team at best, walked into Raleigh, home of the 3rd best team in the ACC (NC State) and crushed them. Georgetown beat Duke, which no one other than Va Tech has even come close to this year. The conference is obscene.
  23. Easily Jackson. Every time I watch another game he does, I laugh aloud at 5 things he says, at least.
  24. the MVC is very very good this year...they should get 4 teams in the big dance this year in UNI, SIU, Creighton, and Wichita St. I would not have been that embarassed to lose to UNI, they are going to win at least one game in the tourny this year...mark it down. I'm still pissed at UNI for not becoming my Cinderella Sweet 16 team last year as I predicted.
