  1. Ozzie Guillen doesn't know anything more about being a foreigner than A-Rod or Nomar does. The guy has a crapload of money and one of the easiest jobs one can have. He doesn't know what the hell being a foreigner is like anymore. I'd say more but I'd probably get banned. Summary: Ozzie's an ass.
  2. It's Wood's return in late June at Wrigley. I was at that one. :) Cubs win it 3-2 on a Todd Hollandsworth single in the 9th.
  3. What a load of crap. What would NBC know about sports anyway, considering they let MLB, NFL, and NBA walk over the last seven or so years in favor of the Gravity Games and Arena Football?
  4. Unfortunately, I only went to three Cubs games in my life that Sammy played in. One, in May 2000, Sammy hit a solo home run (his 10th of that season) and the Cubs lost to Pittsburgh 4-2. One of the other two happened to be his disastrous 0-5, 4 K performance against San Diego on 8/12/04 which earned him a chorus of boos from the crowd, including my best friend who I was at the game with. I firmly remember refusing to open my mouth and boo. Even with all the stuff he has done or allegedly done, the man has done too much for the Cubs, and for me, for me to dislike him.
  5. Reposting my farewell from the thread in Transactions. Questions may exist about his character or his possible usage of performance enhancers, but I don't think there are many people who would dispute that, for his accomplishments alone, Sammy deserved a happier ending than this. Sammy, I don't care about Game 162, or the cork incident (on which I wholeheartedly believe you) or the so-called "crappy" 2004 that so many players in baseball would have killed for, or the fact that you couldn't speak English at a court interrogation disguised as a Congressional hearing. The fact is that you were a huge part in me becoming a Cubs fan, and you carried me through many a crappy year in the late 90s - early 00s. And for that, I'll always be grateful. :)
  6. That actually happens all the time in football, but I haven't heard of that in baseball. My favorite story of that is when Steve Beuerlein signed a one-day contract with Carolina to retire as a Panther. :D
  7. Somehow Notre Dame and BSU won on the same night. Neither impressive - ND beat a USF team that is winless in the Big East 62-55, and Ball State beat the worst team in the conference by a 63-60 margin - but both go up in the W column.
  8. I doubt there is more than one person who is honestly expecting 30 starts from Kerry, including Hendry himself.
  9. I like Dempster more every time he talks.
  10. Zambrano can win a whole batch of Cy Youngs before it's all said and done if the Cub offense can learn to score runs when he is on the mound. The fact that he's lost 15 pounds eases my mind a LOT on whether the extra month of work will affect him.

  12. Lucky they're in a fairly easy block. They've still got supposedly easy wins over Kazakhstan and Slovakia to come (although the Slovaks did beat Russia today).
  13. Did the commentators just talk about skating bears??? Oh crap, Latvia ties it up on a power play.
  14. This is a seperate rant, but my roommate's absolute obsession with my Madden football game is keeping me from watching US v. Latvia hockey, and it's pissing me off.
  15. I was at that game! As was I. Woody was ON. The crowd stood and cheered every time he got 2 strikes on someone from the 3rd inning on.
  16. Boy, its nice to see all Cub fans are not Edward K... and she doesn't even have a good rebuttal... This awfully sounds like someone from NSBB... I'm surprised she even chose to answer the question.
  17. Shouldn't it be that any player is eligible UNTIL there is substantial proof they've used steroids? Your idea seems sort of backwards. That's the way it SHOULD be. Year - HR 1993 - 33 1994 - 25-prorated to 40 over 162 games 1995 - 36-41 over 162 1996 - 40-52 over 162 1997 - 36-41 over 162 1998 - 66-age 29 1999 - 63-age 30 2000 - 50-age 31 2001 - 64-age 32 2002 - 49-age 33-53 over 162 2003 - 40-age 34(hit in the head with pitch affecting his approach at the plate)-47 over 162 2004 - 35-age 35-45 over 162. Why that almost looks like a natural progression or something. Babe Ruth was roided out of his mind. You're funny. Show me a list of players to put up Sosa's lines. On that list, those stats can't come from 1998-2001. Greg Vaughn, Brady Anderson, Bret Boone, and many others have put up FAR more suspicious stat lines in their careers than Sosa, who was a 30-HR hitter as soon as he started playing full time.
  18. Why men's figure skating? It would be an absolute shock if anyone not named Plushenko won this thing. I'm interested to see (spoiler alert) how Bode got disqualified from the combined.
  19. Ah, the cork incident. Let me ask you a question. Do you have a problem with Gaylord Perry being in the HOF? Because Perry was busted (on more than one occasion, IIRC) for throwing a spitball. It was rumored he threw it much of, if not all of, his career. Yet nobody ever seems to remember that. He got in no problem, as I recall. This isn't excusing what Sammy did, however. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Sammy shouldn't get in ever, I am just saying that I think he should have to wait a year because of that incident. I've heard much evidence to suggest that the only help corking your bat gives you is in your head. Not excusing it, but just an interesting point.
  20. I heard that MLB.TV even blacks out Chicago games in the Chicago area, making it completely useless if I were to get it. Is this true?
  21. Having both of our catchers in it will be a little odd, who's catching spring training games? Other than them and Lee who else is playing in it from the Cubs? Maybe we'll call in Jose Macias as our emergency catcher. As for who else is playing - I know Z is planning on pitching for Venezuela, but I believe those are the only four.
  22. Most Valuable Player, not best numbers. Without Sammy, the 98 Cubs would not have made the playoffs. McGwire's numbers were superior, but the Cards did not make the playoffs. Sammy was more valuable than Mac. In my opinion, it wasn't even close. I'm so tired of this argument. It's not the most valuable player to their particular team. It's most valuable. Period. As much as I love Sammy, McGwire should've won the 98 MVP. It's an individual award and team accomplishments should not play any factor whatsoever. If the team had nothing to do it, then call it the Most Outstanding Player, not the Most Valuable Player.
  23. Not by a long shot. Not even CLOSE. Unless you've forgotten who was batting directly behind Sammy in 1998. Hint: Henry Rodriguez.
  24. If he retired before this season, there wouldn't appear to be anyone on the ballot of consequence with him. Jim Rice's tenure on the writers' ballot will be over by then, Mac will be in as well as Gossage, and other than possibly Larry Walker I can't think of any future HOFers who have retired in the last two years.
  25. My favorite part of going to school here is that we aren't close enough to get CSN Chicago, but we are close enough to have any Cubs game scheduled to be on ESPN blacked out. I love the politics of regional TV.
