  1. Very nice win. I've got no problem pulling for the Pirates in the playoffs.
  2. Waive after wavie does not mean star after star. It means that we will no longer be sifting though other peoples trash to field a team. We will have a group of kids getting their first shot at the major league. Think about it, since Kerry Wood how many exciting prospects have we had? Cruz, Prior, Zambrano, Patterson, Hill, Choi, Pie and Castro. Did I miss anyone? That's about one guy every other year. I see it setting up as two or three guys a year for year after year (though not next year). If you're not talking about stars, the quartet of Guzman/Hill/Marshall/Marmol all got some buzz. Soto definitely did by the time he came up. Cedeno, Gallagher and Cashner. Out of everyone listed there, Guzman was the only one in the status area as our current big 4. Alcantara and Edwards have more buzz than anyone else on that list as well, although Cashner and Gallagher could be considered in the same general range.
  3. If we're going to use Strop as our closer next year, I don't understand why he's not being used that way currently.
  4. [expletive] with Kyle, suffer the consequences.
  5. So, do we keep both Sweeney and Bogusevic next year?
  6. Kyle, heading towards the projecting wins thing soon enough, is projecting 8 wins from a bench and bullpen too much? What's fair for those?
  7. By the way, instructs are informal . AZPhil keeps stats, most teams won't release them. Plus, you may have extra guys hit, other odd things like that too. Very strict pitch counts. FYI, it was during an instruct game that Javy did his famous "I'll do WTF I want" thing.
  8. Oh yeah, with the amount of players and all they even get some split squad games in. Not sure, but I think they get in 30-40 games.
  9. Honestly, I want to be buyers at the deadline next year. A big FA addition and a trade for a pitcher(or hitter if FA is Tanaka) could put us in that territory. Without even raising the payroll from where it is now.
  10. My post was in no way anything positive about Ricketts, by the way. Just means that we've got such a low payroll, a few big money additions won't stretch the payroll much. And we'll be contending. The first time Ricketts will truly get tested won't be until we need to start buying out FA years of guys that aren't even here yet. How Ricketts handles the 2014 payroll will go a very long way in how I judge him. I know there are 29 other teams out there, but there is no excuse not to go get one of the big FA this offseason. We can certainly afford to trade for a guy in his arb years too. If instead though, payroll drops to 90ish or lower, I'll join Mojo with the forehead heroin.
  11. First, the renovation is going to cost 500, not 300 mill. More importantly though is its pay as you go. It's not like they're just forking over 500 mill. In fact, they're trying to do a lot of it that's revenue earning up front, so it basically pays for itself. Not to mention, with a renegotiated TV deal coming very soon as well, the Ricketts won't be spending anything close to 500 mill out of money they already have. Their financial situation may very well be rosy, but it's not available to anyone other than Joe. Who's not even a sports fan. We are sorely counting on the revenue making parts of the renovations and the TV deal to eventually move our payroll forward. And with the amount of solid, cheap players we've got on the way, a big time addition or two in the next few years won't even move the payroll needle anyway.
  12. My first inclination when I saw that was to see who went behind him, but I couldn't find any results.
  13. Not sure where to put this, but Tim Dierkes says Javy recently changed agents. Unsure who he was with, but now he's with an unknown guy.
  14. My guess is if Olt has a solid spring, he's in the majors, Alcantara, Baez, and Villanueva at 2b, SS, and 3B for Iowa, with Bryant at 3B in Tennessee. Vitters is dealt and Watkins is in Iowa as a utility guy, learning to play OF.
  15. Sneaky, great point. Honestly hadn't looked very deep into that.(obviously) It's cool we have guys with versatility, because even with some guys certain to not pan out, for 7 positions, we've got Castro, Rizzo, Junior, Olt, Javy, Alcantara, Villanueva, Bryant, Soler, Vogelbach, Almora, and Candelario as legit options as future starters.
  16. John Manuel from BA.
  17. Law said CJ could be a potential star in his chat today. Same dude that called out Manuel yesterday for taking CJ over Syndergaard asked Keith, who said he understands Manuel's reasoning.
  18. So with Garza being the top FA SP on the market, teams flush with new MLB money and an inherent league-wide need for pitching........Garza MAY get 60 mill.
  19. Wow, reading Manuel's chat, he thinks CJ is a top 5-7 SP in all the minors and likes him more than Syndergaard.
  20. Uh, you think Garza is getting a contract for under 50 mill?
  21. I think they will try to trade a lot of cap space. Yeah, that's possible too.
  22. Do you truly understand how posting works? One, you only pay the fee IF you sign the player. Two, the players actual contract is generally less BECAUSE of the posting fee. The posting fee on Darvish was around the same money as his contract. On top of this, they are currently in talks to redo the system anyway, giving the player a larger cut. As for choosing between Garza and Tanaka, who both likely will get total outlays between 80-100 mill? Garza will be 30 with quite a few red flags arm-wise. Tanaka will be 25. You want the older pitcher at the same money? Me neither.
  23. We'll still have the same amount of IFA money, just capped at a max of 250,000 per player. I can see them loading up on a ton of 150-250k pitchers. Quantity approach the year after quality approach. With 16 year olds, I'm fine with this.
  24. I think Theo misjudged Chicago politics, probably believed Ricketts that the renovations would move quicker. The new CBA definitely caught him by surprise. Add in a big pay bump, a new title, being burnt out in Boston, hating Lucchino, and the allure of breaking another curse- I think it was pretty easy for him to convince himself the monetary issues would work themselves out.
