  1. You obviously haven't read too many game threads this year. My favorite: the "BE HURT THERIOT" comment(s). :-s I mean whatever people want to give Cedeno a bit of a chance too The hysterical hate for Cedeno was a lot louder than this and a hot less-than-half season of hitting in the PCL has everybody sold on him and singing his praises and praying for severe injury of the incumbent? wow, if that isnt the definition of reactionary i do not know what is.
  2. there's been a substantial amount of complaining, a polite term, about his inclusion in the lineup and his good play has not quelled that one bit. exhibit A: quotes i cited in my initial post
  3. you're kidding me. it isn't? thats what he's been thus far this season. yet the despisal of him on here is so intense that we've still got non-stop complaining about his inclusion in the lineup. i really can't relate to the loathing of a player on your team who has produced well for you thus far and given full effort. if he's back to a .672 ops again soon then the complaints may become more valid. and a .364 slg. all hail the savior.
  4. he shouldn't even be given a chance to keep it up god i hate his white ass so badly if i see him start another game for this team i am going to start bleeding out of my eye sockets
  5. .288/.354/.424 coming into the game with plus defense at the SS position. GET THAT WORTHLESS TURD OFF THE BASEBALL FIELD BEFORE HE DOES ANYMORE DAMAGE TO THE CITY OF CHICAGO AND THE ENTIRE NATION
  6. i'm pretty glad they've gotten off to such a strong start. this will surely delude LaRussa into thinking they're a contender and further delay the rebuilding process they should have started last August. there is absolutely no plausible scenario where they're still challenging for the division come July.
  7. The next 3-4 years, who would you rather have: Conor Jackson or Billy Butler? R-HR-RBI-SB-K-BA-OBP-SLG My thinking is that Jackson is closer to his prime and will be better the next two seasons, does Butler have a high enough upside to warrant choosing him over Jackson?
  8. to increase your chances of winning the game. he's more likely than not going to get you out anyways. might as well make it a productive one. thankfully your hysterical wit remedied this one
  9. they were 16 games over .500 in one-run games too? you're being intentionally dense. if you have a team with a good run differential and good execution of fundamental play, you probably have a WS contender. i can't believe this is so controversial, but the groupthink evident in this thread is that the 2nd aspect is simply BS. it's really a bizarre bias. You are being intentionally illogical. There's no evidence whatsoever that strong fundamentals equals one-run wins, but you assert it as if it is unassailable fact. If they were so good fundamentally in those games, shouldn't they have won by more than one run? Or is it non-fundamental to manufacture a run when you are already winning 4-3? unassailable fact? i had said "probably". not sure what you're referring to. situations usually dictate what to do in different situations of the game, that's a big function of the manager.
  10. romantic? i dont even like the white sox. i'm not all that big a fan of small ball. i've just argued that it can be very beneficial in certain situations. the SB% and other stats you're mentioning you get a distorted picture of the truth when looking at the totality of the production. you have to take into account there are situations where the probabilities change. meaning, i don't see much problem with the KC Royals running at will with their speedy players. the negative effect of a CS is much less pronounced than having say, a guy getting caught with Ortiz and Manny coming up to the plate. the situation for the Royals is that they don't have enough power in the lineup to make the penalty for this as severe. i don't think all outs are created equally. if you're facing Joe Nathan with bad hitters, bunts or steals are probably going to be the smartest way of trying for the tying run.
  11. right, I agree with that. but if you're able to hit behind the runner, lay down sacrifice bunts, get runners in from 3rd with 1 out, etc. you're going to win close games at a better percentage. if you watch games allowing yourself some subjectivity this becomes evident before long. ok, fine. collective concensus, if thats the term you'd prefer.

  13. thats the best reasoning you can give for it? boy are those teams who exhibit great fundamentals really lucky. 2007 diamondbacks...horseshoe...ass...
  14. They were 35-19 in 1-run games and outproduced their expected W-L by 8 games. That indicates to me they excelled at fundamental play and situational hitting (and featured a strong bullpen). They were 35-19 in 1-run games because they had 12 pitchers pitch out of their minds and their offense couldn't score many runs so they were drawn into close games. the astros pitchers pitched even more 'out of their minds' and their offense 'couldn't score many runs' even worse yet they managed a modest 25-21 record in their games.

  16. there is more than one way to score a run, and win ballgames. but the posters in this thread exhibit so much unbridled arrogance and pomposity that they must be authorities on the matter. no point in having any discussion on the topic, really...
  17. hmm i thought i made a coherent counter argument but everyone seemed to gloss over it
  18. getting pushed into the goalie constitutes goaltender interference?
  19. the problem is that you're looking at this in terms of aggregated production. winning 10-1 doesn't benefit you in the standings anymore than 3-2, i know this is nothing groundbreaking to say. but for a team that does benefit from a strong pitching staff it might be prudent to have players who can more consistently score runs. i know this is going to incite loads of chuckles because now i sound like joe morgan, but it should be obvious that offensive production via bunt singles, stolen bases, sacrifices are more easily achieved when you're facing tough pitchers than swinging away trying for hits. that's just playing situationally, getting what the defense gives you. of course, if you don't have a strong pitching staff the weaknesses of podsednik types are greatly exposed, as you'll need to score more runs to keep up with what your pitchers are surrendering and don't really have the option of situational small ball. you guys are going by the sabermetric book too much in this topic.
  20. supposedly steve phillips offered david wright in a jose cruz jr. deal to the blue jays but was turned down by ricciardi, who is loved on here
  21. his OBP isn't ~.330
  22. wow i really can't believe the reactions to that play. guys like holmstrom do this every game, theyre just less obnoxious and obvious about it. but you hear all these canadian talking heads saying they're embarrassed for the game of hockey, sean avery's family and the entire human race. give me a break. not just that play. he's still talking about brodeur's divorce, 5 years after it happened? avery's a scumbag. that made me laugh, reminds me of Slapshot where Newman's taunting the goalie

  24. i'm not as impressed with his defense as others are. like the range, not the arm.
  25. wow what a defensive meltdown by the capitals
