  1. That's just silly. Once Toronto falls out of playoff contention, they'll be itching to get rid of Burnett. If he's healthy and pitching well, he'll opt out of his contract at the end of the season, and they wouldn't get any compensatory draft picks for that. If he's not healthy at the end of the season, he wont exercise the opt-out, which puts Ricciardi (whom has already publicly traded jabs with Burnett) in the situation of having an injured ace making twelve million for each of the next two years. Burnett's contract is going to screw Toronto one way or the other. Letting Ricciardi name his price would be utterly foolish. Play hardball in negotiations and walk away with a good chunk of your top-tier talent still intact instead. i know what you're saying, but there's going to be plenty of interest from other teams for him come july. i'd be sure to come out on top in the sweepstakes, he means that much. and besides that, we don't have too many prospects i'd hate to lose.
  2. if we've got designs on the playoffs come july i'd really let ricciardi or beane name their price in prospects for Burnett or Harden. we only have 1 guy in the rotation who can be overpowering in a playoff atmosphere. i know Hill has flashes of brilliance, but I don't feel good about having him as the #2 in a short series. Burnett and Harden inspire a lot more confidence and that's worth a whole lot to me. it's not like we don't have a full stable of pitchers who can start if one gets hurt.
  3. sure i'll do it
  4. yeah they're really going to regret having him under their control throughout his prime. lord knows years 26-31 are when players start to really suck and make you regret signing them. i'll give you a break though, i'm sure you just read others opinions on contracts and tried making your own conclusions. Breaking News: Cubs sign first round pick to a 6-year ameteur contract "wow 6 years is a bit much..."
  5. i was using the numbers from the MLB experience last year.
  6. Keeper. Sleeper. Keeper as in a player that may not be an awesome fantasy player this year but has a good shot of being one in the future. Sleeper as in a player that not many people would expect to be good and thusly would be available via the waiver wire. right, and that doesn't change what i said. i can't really imagine barton ever being fantasy relevant in a 5x5 and miller's a long ways away from even being startable. love him.
  7. i really wish aramis would have hustled out that HR instead of picking up his paycheck
  8. I don't think Beane would have much say in whether a sequel gets written or not. Of course, I was kidding. Out of curiosity, what about Moneyball do you think set the organization back? Giving away business secrets, for lack of a better term. He revealed his strategy and lost the OBP undervalued market, having to resort to the whole sinkerballers and superlative defenders strategy which hasn't really worked so well. He's bright and he'll find a new niche to exploit, such as AAAA guys, but Depod and Towers are hitting that one hard too. Right now he's left to the Beinfest model. Which will be impossible to succeed with if he's not getting superstars in the draft, which has been the case the past few years. Just a lot of solid unspectacular contributors. But recycling the Swishers and Harens he drafts should allow him to float around .500 or a little better every once in awhile, which might be a good achievement given his payroll.
  9. it's the same idiocy, different manager. it's like the time where piazza's arm was so bad he couldn't throw guys out on pitchouts and dusty tried bunting over corey patterson with piazza behind the dish. the other team plays a horrible, horrible catcher and you don't run. it's as stupid as swinging at the first pitches daniel cabrera gives you.
  10. i can't really see the reason for writing a Moneyball II unless Beane craves the extra further admiration wants the organization set back again.
  11. What do you see in Miller and Barton that I don't? Miller won't soon have the wins, Ks (and probably WHIP) to make him fantasy relevant and Barton probably won't ever hit 20 HRs and he's in a nasty lineup that will inhibit runs created. From my perspective it seems youre confusing their fantasy value with real life value.
  12. i have little doubt it'll hold up, but the cards are going to be so awful the FO will just say screw it and theyll do the surgery in august to get him ready for 2009 when they wont contend either but they think they will
  13. thats the line im trying to get from him in my dynasty mode of mlb 2k8
  14. awesome
  15. this is bizarre timing after the 93 win prediction from BP or whatever
  16. tigers fans realize their bullpen will be nasty until zumaya returns to full health
  17. pie has a higher strikeout rate - 22.73% to 24.39%. that's marginal. hits balls hard less frequently - pie had substantially better LD% has had no success at the major league level - small sample & .273 BABIP. kemp should send some luck (.417 babip) felix's way and we'll think he's great. and has not shown the ability to consistently hit for a high average like kemp has? like hitting .300 in the minors, with a better BB:K?
  18. utterly ridiculous. a high school half pitcher-half right fielder. yeah, we wouldn't have had any problems developing him into a useful major leaguer...
  19. fuku really got down the line in a hurry
  20. if i'm rostering a player in a keeper league it's going to be one that has top-35 draft pick upside for next year. i don't know of any regularly-available FA who has more upside. if upton, bruce, longoria or maybin are available then sure-pick one of them up. but since he's talking about keeper sleepers i assumed they weren't. i don't see why gomez isn't capable of having a rookie year mirroring that of jose reyes or carl crawford.
  21. i wish this team didnt draft so poorly
