  1. yeah its not like Floyd, Danks, Quentin were ever highly regarded prospects or anything
  2. it was just a general comparison. the Padres, talent-wise, don't even compare favorably to the team with the worst GM in baseball. or would you disagree?
  3. he was 3rd in all of baseball in pitches thrown last season
  4. god awful? wrong year, i said is. i dont really have anything against depodesta, but i think it's incredible that he is treated as being beyond reproach. we all like him because his philosophy differs from the norm but what has he done to earn such adoration? the Padres right now have the fewest wins in baseball and some still pine for him to take over as the GM for the team with the most wins in baseball. i understand thats a bit of an oversimplification, but a better question might be- which team, purely talent-wise, is set up better for both now and the future: SD or SF? at least the Giants (with likely the worst GM in the game) have a ton of quality pitching talent both in the majors and minors, yet the Padres are going to hold a garage sale for their pitiful collection of useful talent this summer for the trade deadline. teams will get a chance to haggle for their 27 year old AAA players back. "i'll give you 50¢ for this Scott Hairston..."
  5. well its comforting to know that he realizes why the team he helped put together is so god awful
  6. i don't know why everyone is overlooking the Reds. despite Dusty, they're the only team I have any concern about keeping the division race close. they have a ton of talent, which will only improve once they replace Griffey with Bruce and Belisle with Bailey.
  7. there's a lot to be said about a guy who can carry an entire category at a really thin position. and while 12 HRs last year doesn't really stand out, there's only 4 SS worth owning who were markedly better than that (i'm assuming Greene, Peralta, Hardy aren't owned, and Guillen sheds his SS status after the year). he's a small detriment in RBI and about neutral for AVG but he more than makes up for that with his terrific run totals and ridiculous SB. as he showed in 06, he has legitimate top-5 player in fantasy baseball upside. he's still only 24 need i remind you, oh how i'd love to get my grubby mitts on him in a keeper league.
  8. i don't believe you've ever engaged me in any type of arguments or ever expressed disagreement with any points i've made. actually, i don't believe i've ever noticed you engage in any baseball related discussion on here other than flaming or trolling. if you're of the opinion that no points i make are rational, by all means point out the flaws in my logic that you perceive. otherwise, a blanket statement like this just comes across as an pointless generality with little basis.
  9. in the minors, his BB rate was actually better than Crawford's but slightly less than Reyes had. at any rate, Gomez put up virtually identical numbers to both in the minors, making up for a poorer BABIP with better ISOs. He also showed better prowess on the basepaths, stealing more bases at greater success rate. The only caveat is that he was a year older than the other two players mentioned at each stage in the minors. and when you look at what he's done at the pro level this year (at age 21), it matches right up there with Reyes' and Crawford's age 22 seasons. also from an observational standpoint, he has much better bat speed and better foot speed than these two. i don't really see what's ridiculous about the comparison.
  10. weird comparison. Chris Young walks a lot and has speed but it doesn't really compare to Gomez's which is game changing. He'll likely settle into similar production as Reyes and Crawford, which has a lot of value but his upside is to be better than both of those players. As for Martinez, he likely ends up at LF or 1B. He'll have to hit a ton to bridge the gap defensively with Gomez in terms of value where he has the ability to be GG once he starts taking better routes. There are also legitimate questions about Martinez's power potential. never would have happened. it's unconceivable that a team is going to give up 2 top-50 prospects just for the rights to pay a guy $140m.
  11. Keep on sticking your head in the sand, there. wow that was kind of uncalled for probably should stick to soccer talk
  12. great BB:K rate and a doubles machine in the minors he's clearly grown into power, which is not terribly uncommon. some guys i can think of are Garrett Anderson, Holliday, Chris Duncan, Cano, Beltran, Hunter, Carlos Guillen and I'm sure hundreds of others as well. last 109 G (437 PA): 80 R, 24 HR, 66 RBI, 20 SB, 0.287/0.368/0.558 good for a full season pace (621 PA) of 114 R, 34 HR, 94 RBI, 28 SB i like McLouth a lot
  13. Reyes is by far the best player in the trade, and the rest of the players don't reconcile out to much. You'd make a mistake to accept it.
  14. The Twins got screwed in the deal simply by not getting the best prospect in the Mets organization. Seriously how do you even discuss the trade with the Mets with Fernando Martinez not being in the discussion. They didn't do bad, but would have been better off working something out with the Red Sox. while it's probably a bit short-sighted, it's easier to sell the fanbase on a trade if you have at least one of the players playing everyday at the pro level. i also think Gomez is the more valuable player long-term than Martinez.
  15. thats an encouraging outing for Petrick Harvey...is there such a thing as a 1-1/2 A player?
  16. 2 instead of 1, but whose counting? i guess i should be concerned your evaluations and predictions are always so spot on Thats only because Kosuke is a good baseball player where as Soriano is not.
  17. If Soto's foot doesn't catch Paulino's? If Soto's passed ball doesnt lead to a run? (I'm not trying to pick on Soto, I swear) If our best starter pitched like an ace? If our best reliever pitched like the shutdown pitcher he is? There are a lot of what ifs. It's really not a big deal. Teams lose games all the time. This particular loss we just happened to have multiple failures from our normally reliable players. then we might possibly have another notch in the win column and win the division by 9 games instead of 8 or whatever
  18. i dont know many 5 year olds strong enough to break wood bats over their knee
  19. oh nasty dont do it
  20. No, it's ok. They gave up the best pitcher on the planet and got Carlos Gomez. Did you know he hit for the cycle?!?!!?!!11!!11!!1!!!ONE! kind of early to make a judgment on this trade, most of the players havent even made the majors yet the Twins had zero leverage and probably made out with a really good haul considering. the other offers of Hughes and Melky or Lester, Masterson and Crisp certainly don't look any better. Santana was due for a 20m+/year extension and would only approve trades to a few teams. they could have done far worse.
  21. what's more impressive Bourn's 36/37 SB% the last two years in only 284 PA or He still has an everyday job with .522 OPS
  22. articles in the TB newspapers at the time suggested the Rays were heavily considering taking Harvey #1 overall. Lou said he had never seen somebody put on such a power display in batting practice.
  23. It works for everyone, you can't just take a guys road splits and count them as his true value. what a novel concept! Old news to some of us... viewtopic.php?f=6&t=48174&p=1749774#p1749774 please stretch first and be extremely careful so you don't pull something trying so eagerly to pat yourself on the back i'm sorry i couldn't stomach reading nine pages of that bonerfest
