    I just think he feels that the whole world thinks they never paid attention to it in the past. I know, I know, the evidence suggests they didn't, and I've told him that. Things started to change, though in a serious way during the organization meetings in the fall of '06 (wow, after Dusty was gone!), when they really started to acknowledge the importance of OBP. What worries me is I've yet to hear a good thing about Wasserstrom. He has no background in stats, moving to his current job from the media relations department. Maybe he's grown into the job along with the organization, but I fear his work includes way too much small sample size/fluke splits rather than helpful stats. They should hire Mephistopheles. it is a shame that guy got banned. nearly every prediction i can remember him making looks pretty awful right now. i'd love to hear defense for some of them. -barry zito pitching like a #1 starter again -jr towles being the most valuable rookie -brian mccann settling in as .270, 18 hr guy -khalil greene repeating fluke season -brandon phillips regressing hard

    i'd disagree about McLouth. he's very much for real.

    I'm too lazy to put a bunch of research into it right now, but I feel relatively confident in saying that the Brandon Phillips' and Josh Hamiltons of the world are very much the exception, and not the rule. I think "crappy teams" make these kind of moves all the time - we just don't hear about them unless they blow up. i fully understand that there'll be players like Joel Guzman, Brazelton, Jerome Williams, Burroughs who don't benefit a whole lot from a change of scenery. but you don't really lose much in finding that out, and you have such a substantially higher potential payoff than you do when you sign John Mabry.

    I don't see why crappy teams don't pick up the pieces of every prospect who's had a rough initial showing at the MLB level causing teams to sour on them. At least you have so much more potential upside for example, going after McPherson, Ensberg or Marte than proven lousiness like Jose Castillo. Brandon Phillips, Josh Hamilton have also shown how these moves can really pay off big time. And I'm guessing Felix will too down the road.

    i think you're confusing dayn perry with mike celizic i dont really know what type of in-depth sports analysis you'd expect from MSNBC nobody in the country would even know who this guy was if he werent constantly ridiculed on a blog

    i'm still going to reserve judgment on Felix until he gets any semblance of regular PT in the majors. it's not entirely his fault he's been railroaded by Piniella. he starts hitting well over a 3 week span and promptly gets demoted.

    Chamberlain is better than Marmol. IF he is its' only by the smallest of margins. Its bigger than the smallest of margins. did i read this right? Marmol is the best reliever in baseball. Nate McLouth is the only player who has any clue how to hit him (4 RBI of his 5 ER).

    the biggest problem i have is that seemingly every other 1st round pick has gotten off to a terrific start. knowing what we know now, would you rather have Vitters or Wieters? Porcello? Parker? Laporta? Heyward?

    .312/.427/.526 career performance in the minors. you grow into a little power with those hitting skills and you've got an allstar.

    it was just a general comparison. the Padres, talent-wise, don't even compare favorably to the team with the worst GM in baseball. or would you disagree?

    god awful? wrong year, i said is. i dont really have anything against depodesta, but i think it's incredible that he is treated as being beyond reproach. we all like him because his philosophy differs from the norm but what has he done to earn such adoration? the Padres right now have the fewest wins in baseball and some still pine for him to take over as the GM for the team with the most wins in baseball. i understand thats a bit of an oversimplification, but a better question might be- which team, purely talent-wise, is set up better for both now and the future: SD or SF? at least the Giants (with likely the worst GM in the game) have a ton of quality pitching talent both in the majors and minors, yet the Padres are going to hold a garage sale for their pitiful collection of useful talent this summer for the trade deadline. teams will get a chance to haggle for their 27 year old AAA players back. "i'll give you 50¢ for this Scott Hairston..."

    well its comforting to know that he realizes why the team he helped put together is so god awful

    i don't know why everyone is overlooking the Reds. despite Dusty, they're the only team I have any concern about keeping the division race close. they have a ton of talent, which will only improve once they replace Griffey with Bruce and Belisle with Bailey.

    there's a lot to be said about a guy who can carry an entire category at a really thin position. and while 12 HRs last year doesn't really stand out, there's only 4 SS worth owning who were markedly better than that (i'm assuming Greene, Peralta, Hardy aren't owned, and Guillen sheds his SS status after the year). he's a small detriment in RBI and about neutral for AVG but he more than makes up for that with his terrific run totals and ridiculous SB. as he showed in 06, he has legitimate top-5 player in fantasy baseball upside. he's still only 24 need i remind you, oh how i'd love to get my grubby mitts on him in a keeper league.

    i don't believe you've ever engaged me in any type of arguments or ever expressed disagreement with any points i've made. actually, i don't believe i've ever noticed you engage in any baseball related discussion on here other than flaming or trolling. if you're of the opinion that no points i make are rational, by all means point out the flaws in my logic that you perceive. otherwise, a blanket statement like this just comes across as an pointless generality with little basis.

    in the minors, his BB rate was actually better than Crawford's but slightly less than Reyes had. at any rate, Gomez put up virtually identical numbers to both in the minors, making up for a poorer BABIP with better ISOs. He also showed better prowess on the basepaths, stealing more bases at greater success rate. The only caveat is that he was a year older than the other two players mentioned at each stage in the minors. and when you look at what he's done at the pro level this year (at age 21), it matches right up there with Reyes' and Crawford's age 22 seasons. also from an observational standpoint, he has much better bat speed and better foot speed than these two. i don't really see what's ridiculous about the comparison.

    weird comparison. Chris Young walks a lot and has speed but it doesn't really compare to Gomez's which is game changing. He'll likely settle into similar production as Reyes and Crawford, which has a lot of value but his upside is to be better than both of those players. As for Martinez, he likely ends up at LF or 1B. He'll have to hit a ton to bridge the gap defensively with Gomez in terms of value where he has the ability to be GG once he starts taking better routes. There are also legitimate questions about Martinez's power potential. never would have happened. it's unconceivable that a team is going to give up 2 top-50 prospects just for the rights to pay a guy $140m.
