  1. I wonder how much Theo is actually involved in that? Is it like a "Co-GM" situation? Or do they just meet about things and then Theo lets Jed actually do the trade haggling? Does Jed have to run a big trade through Theo first? Just curious about the logistics. Based on an interview I saw/read earlier this season with Jed Hoyer, he stated that they basically split the duties based upon which one has a better relationship with the GM they are dealing with. It also sounded like they try to build a consensus on decisions. I think it is safe to assume that Theo has final say. So we all agree that Jed will do the initial haggling and then Theo will finalize the deal. Kind of like a car salesman and the boss. I doubt that's how it works. Jed and Theo probably set the acceptable range at the start and modify if necessary but the idea of Jed hemming and hawing before going to the boss for approval is ridiculous.
  2. I wonder how willing they would be in parting with Eovaldi since he's contributing to the big league squad. I'd love to get Zach Lee, if possible. I'd love Eovaldi but I agree. A team that needs SP probably isn't looking to move a current SP.
  3. my god, by september he'll be hitting .450 He's 22? I realize it's the PCL, but I thought people were talking like vitters was dead.
  4. Would you want to trade positions with any of them? We get an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick, they get our big-market resources at the MLB level? Do we get the Cardinals WS trophies and best fans in baseball?
  5. Because if Reed Johnson could sustain a 26% line drive percentage, he'd be a superstar on a $25 million/year contract. .390 BABIPs don't get sustained no matter what the LD% is. So he's been really good, albeit at an unsustainable level, for a couple months? That's not the same as "look at BABIP and immediately say he's been lucky" which has become all the rage.
  6. If we're to believe this last page of the thread, the Rangers should probably hold out for the inevitable Strasburg/Harper package. Would you trade Profar for half a year of Hamels? No, but depending on how you value them I don't think it's outrageous at all for him to be traded for Garza. Let alone Castro too
  7. No, you can't. I had the same thing happen with a rain delay and Wilson throwing <10 pitches. I wasn't allowed to use his start the next day, which would have been my 8th.
  8. I don't think it's always that cut and dried. It's a balance that the FO has to strike. There are certainly situations in which it would make more sense to take the second BPA where the talent difference isn't so great and the cost difference is significant.
  9. I like Murray so pulling for him.

  11. http://www.bleachernation.com/2012/07/05/the-cubs-were-the-runners-up-for-yu-darvish/ I'm saying it's a token bid considering it was around 15 million; he says it wasn't because we were tops in the second tier and that nobody expected him to get around Dice-K's number because he might decide not to sign if a team did that. While I vaguely remember a rumor about that, I think it was well-expected that he would get around Dice-K's s posting fee or more, even when the bidding was over and we were waiting. I mean, if you told us the 15 million number around that time I think we would all say that would be a token bid. I think we knew it would take around Dice-K posting bid money to win, and that's exactly what it did take. Thoughts on whether or not you think it was a token bid or serious, if you had to pick one or the other? PS - not trying to discredit Brett or anything, the site is awesome. Just playing devil's advocate since he made it seem like the answer was obvious, and I thought it was pretty obvious that it was the exact opposite. It would have taken a Dice-K bid for the cubs to win the bid bc one team was stupid. It would have taken Texas 1/3 of what Dice-K got to win the bid.
  12. Maybe I missed it but do we know who else bid (beyond Texas, Toronto, and us) and what those other bids were? If there were several teams around $15m and one that more than tripled the market, I think one team just didn't know the market well. That or the other teams colluded to make there appear to be a bunch of interest in the top available Japanese pitcher, which seems unlikely.
  13. Ha. N&G thinks an argument isn't worthy of his time. Never thought I'd see the day. I thought it was pretty well accepted that part of an evaluation of a GM includes evaluating trades after the fact. David seems to have the contrary view. I guess I'm not sure why this isn't a valuable discussion to have on the board.
  14. You said, "can't," sarcastically, so I used the word, "can." You're reading far too much into that. You said "process >>>> outcome" when I attacked wsr's post about using trades to evaluate GMs. Your post leads directly to the conclusions I'm inferring. So if you think otherwise, why not just state what you think?
  15. Can? It does. Entirely ignoring the results in the context of a baseball trade is stupid.
  16. Process >>>>>>>>> Outcome Oh, that's right. when you evaluate a process, you entirely ignore the outcome. don't collect information about the outcome b/c that can't inform your process evaluation. Who said its about ignoring the outcome. You place that outcome along with the vast set of outcomes from similar scenarios and continue to go with whatever the results say is the best process. I'm willing to bet when you stack this trade against all the similair trades like it, the results say this type of trade is at worst neutral, even if this one flopped. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk WSR did. And when I asserted that it was ridiculous to not judge GMs in part based on the outcomes of their trades, David posted his little comparison above. So WSR and David stated or strongly implied that you ignore outcomes.
  17. Process >>>>>>>>> Outcome Oh, that's right. when you evaluate a process, you entirely ignore the outcome. don't collect information about the outcome b/c that can't inform your process evaluation.
  18. Wait, you can't judge a trade in hindsight or blame a GM for how a trade turns out? You wanna think about that one again?
  19. For starters, anything that gets Dusty's panties in a bunch is a plus, though it comes at the hands of LaRussa. Secondly, Phillips and Cueto were pretty key players in the brawl that knocked LaRue into retirement (though it could easily be argued he should have hung up the spikes years ago). So yes, if I was LaRussa, I would still hold a grudge. Phillips has no argument to be included (or at least, not a persuasive one). But Cueto should have been included and TLR should stop acting like such a brat. Even after he retires he annoys me with his petty bs.
  20. Uh yeah well... he only made it through three times last night. What's up with that? Somewhat concerning: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/jeff-samardzijas-seesaw-season/ Really? Given his use history, I'd be surprised if he didn't struggle in the 70-100 pitch range in his first full year back at SP.

  22. http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/11536/rizzo-takes-blame-for-apparent-castro-gaffe we may be entering "if it seems to good to be true" territory with rizzo here. but i sure hope not. That's it. I'm changing my son's name to rizzo.
