    The fact that the baseball budget will remain the same and it appears we can't spend as much on IFA or the draft would seem to suggest so. If the baseball budget is staying the same and we can't spend as much on the draft or IFA, that would indicate to me that the ML payroll would be able to be increased by the $8-10M that isn't being spent there.

    I think Levine is being fed information (or instructed to leak it) as a smoke screen. The numbers just don't jive unless the Darvish suggestion is 100% on the money, which it well could be.

    The Score just had a guy on from Seattle who pretty much said Ruskell would be the worst possible option for the Bears GM. A quote "Find me 5 guys he drafted that you're proud of". As bad as Seattle has been the last few years, I guess it wouldn't surprise me if you couldn't find 5 good guys from his last few drafts.

    Generally, I completely agree with you. One small point though, the Cubs had the expectation of Soriano not sucking when they were paying $19M a year. So, if he's not living up to his end, I see no reason the Cubs would have to live up to theirs in terms of playing him every single day when he's bad.

    And that goes back to what SSR said, I'm not sure I really buy defensive metrics for a 1B. Nor do I think they matter a ton, especially in comparison to pretty much every other defensive position on the field. And as long as he's not running into outs stupidly on the bases, is that really costing you that much? A lost run is a lost run, doesn't matter what position it's at. At least, as I understand the metric. Right, but in a situation where that one run really matters (at least late in games), you pinch run for him and mitigate some of that problem. Admittedly, him not scoring from 2nd on a single in the 4th inning could cost you a game, but again, he fills such a huge hole that I'm willing to deal with the downside to get the big bat in the lineup. He's certainly a flawed player, but when a guy has an OPS/OPS+ like he does every year, that's just kind of a risk you're either willing or not willing to take.

    Stop boiling it down to just his offensive numbers as if his major negatives as a baserunner and fielder don't matter. He's so bad at the latter two that they significantly bring down his value. It's as silly as turning a blind eye to anything else. Like saying a pitcher just wins or something. Yea, he can hit, but it's not like those other negative things he's doing aren't happening. His value is a combined product of all these things. He was worth 2.1 and 2.7 WAR those years, regardless of how good a hitter he still managed to be. Well, considering how bad the current Cubs are at hitting a baseball, particularly over a fence, I really don't care about the base running and defense as long as he's not David Ortiz bad in the field or worse than any of the Molinas on the bases.

    I think if he'd asked for this contract 4 years ago you'd be hearing a lot more of that. The fact that he wanted 10 years when he'll be 32 in the 1st year of the deal kind of takes some of the heat off ownership because that would have been a terrible business decision for the Cardinals. I also think she should just shut the hell up, but Ballgame does make her a more sympathetic figure.

    Nobody here wants that, as best I can tell. It's a figment of your imagination that you keep perpetrating as fact. It's the reality of the situation that the Cubs are in right now. At some point they have to take the plunge and bolster the team through significant FA signings because their farm system ain't producing enough talent right now to either make their team or make enough impact trades to fix things. The problem is also that the forecast of significant offensive FA being available is pretty barren for a while once Fielder is signed. I agree completely with the first two sentences. Where we differ is, the fact that the forecast of significant offensive FA being available is pretty barren for a while doesn't convince me that signing Fielder to a contract I think will be a mistake, and will hurt the team in the long run, is a wise choice. That's the thing though. The Cubs are a large market team with a large payroll and some big contracts coming off the books. They can afford a less than ideal contract here and there without terribly hamstringing themselves like a lot of other teams would. That's why I'm okay with overpaying for him by a not outlandish margin.

    This. 143 lifetime OPS+? Yeah, that's good enough for me. You're turning a blind eye to his WAR? I'm highly skeptical of how much defense will really be a factor for a guy playing 1B. At SS, 3B, or CF, yeah, I'm totally on board. But I'm not going to prefer Pena over Fielder because Pena can't come close to matching Fielder's production at the plate.

    I'm okay with overpaying to a point. 6/$150 with some sort of vesting option for a 7th year is about as far as I'd be willing to go, much like others have said. His abilities really are pretty scarce right now, especially without having to gut the minors to get something close to what he can do.

    Everybody who is worried about overpaying for Fielder: what the hell do you expect? It's the nature of the beast. Instead of getting hung up on how many millions per WAR he's going to cost, you have to realize that you need that big bat in the middle of the lineup when the rest of it is so devoid of production. And to think you're going to pay market value per WAR for a guy as good as Fielder is just not realistic and it never has been for top end guys (outside of a hometown discount type situation, a la CJ). If he ends up costing a couple million more than he's worth, who cares? The Cubs are a major market team with smart people in charge who will be able to work around the issue and they have plenty of money anyway. Sign him (obviously within reason) and be done with it. He solves a few problems and makes filling out the rest of the lineup a whole lot easier.

    Not sure if you're serious or not, but I'll answer since nobody else did. Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory steroid that slightly suppresses your immune system and cortisone works in a similar manner and neither jacks up your testosterone level. The crap Braun is accused of taking is an anabolic steroid, which does jack up the testosterone level, either directly by what's taken or by taking a precursor that turns into testosterone.
