  1. i can't think of a major league pitcher who got this late in a game with a no-hitter and was removed. i think you just have to let him go for it, and if he gives up a hit then take him out immediately. while santana isn't a big part of the mets' future, he is signed through next season and if he keeps pitching really well, he could fetch a really nice prospect package. And that's the part that would make it tough for me. That's almost something where the GM just calls down to the dugout and says get him out before he gets hurt and destroys his trade value.
  2. Through 8 at 124 pitches I believe. Tough decision for the manager at this point. I wouldn't want to be in his shoes. Santana was struggling with his control a bit and looked like there was a lot more effort than earlier in the game that last inning.
  3. I don't think they will. They've got somebody up in the pen already.
  4. Good, but what the hell right does Selig have to do that? He's not an employee of MLB is he? He gets his paycheck from CSN/WGN I would imagine.
  5. Before this season, I would have taken some more consideration on this. I definitely wanted to see him get more time at SS, but was worried he was going to wind up at 2nd or 3rd. As it stands, I'm gaining more and more confidence that he was be an asset in the field at SS rather than just average or below average. The only shortstop in all of baseball that is on the same level in terms of value as Castro is Tulowitzki (I can see an argument to be made for Andrus). I do believe Trout will be a great player and a better hitter than Castro. There's a good chance he'll have more defensive value as a CF than Castro at SS. However, a guy like Brett Jackson (assuming he develops into what he's been projected to develop into) is not as hard of a fall-off at CF as the next guy in line behind Castro (Alcantara? Hernandez?). I pick Castro. I think this pretty much hits the nail on the head. It's much easier to find an above average guy at CF, or just about any other position outside of C, than it is to find an above average guy at SS. That said, I would take Castro pretty much every time as well.
  6. In the accompanying chat, Kevin Goldstein had this to say: I agree with everything Aaron says about Castro offensively. Defense, not so much. I predict he'll be a third baseman during the last half of this ten year period, and the stolen bases will dwindle. I thought that was interesting given the variety of opinions on his defensive development. And Sutcliffe picked Shark at #26.
  7. We shouldn't have any sort of replay because the rare bad call isn't worse than the cheapening of virtually every cool sports moment involving a close play. So you're okay with Lawrie getting tossed from a game on at least 2 calls that were so completely awful that most blind people would have gotten them right? I mean, there comes a point at which the stupidity/incompetence of the people calling the games has to be remedied in some way. It seemingly gets worse every year.
  8. http://espn.go.com/blog/sportscenter/post/_/id/58085/sports-science-dive-or-run-past-first-base OK, smart guy, since I'm blocked at work which one is faster?
  9. I know Banedon is the only one that agrees with me, but I think it is faster to dive head first, since you immediately gain 6'. However I don't think the risk of injury outweighs the extra .01 second you gain. . If you're 12 feet tall. This would actually probably be a pretty interesting thing for the ESPN Sports Science guy to break down.
  10. People continue to suckle on Dumpster’s teat as if it were Salma Hayek’s. He gave up 6 hits, 4 walks, and 6 ERs in under 5 innings today, but it’s not his fault. Couldn’t be. No, instead the sucklers look at his sub 3.00 ERA, his still sparkling 1.15 WHIP, his anemic run support and declare him the best EVAH. I gave up this battle long ago on message boards, but the fire still burns. Dumpster puts the over in rated. If only the Cubs could somehow maroon him on Gilligan’s Island. Or at least Des Moines. One last year and perhaps, finally, we’ll be done with him. Free at last, Free at last, thank God Almighty, they’ll be Free at last. First, there is no over in the word rated. You're doing it wrong. Second, where the hell were you when he was allowing 0 -2 runs in 7+ innings per start the first month and getting no run support? He's had 3 starts of nine now that weren't GREAT. Go away.
  11. What did the Sox get for sending him to San Diego?
  12. I was just about to post the exact same thing.
  13. He gives up 2 runs in the 2nd and you say he "fails to show up."? That's pretty dumb. I was just trying to beat the Dempster haters to the punch. At least he brought his bat.
  14. He gives up 2 runs in the 2nd and you say he "fails to show up."? That's pretty dumb. I think he was saying that out of frustration as he went 3 balls on the last guy after having already walked a couple (plus the HR). Yeah, he's definitely struggling to find the zone right now. 45-25 pitches-strikes thru 2. Not exactly ideal with the less than great offense and a bad bullpen.
  15. What's the cutoff on it being a good play? 75% success? He just got back to that at 15/20 on the season.
  16. Well, Dempster did get the start, so that makes sense!
  17. What if one is saying both? I've tried to make it abundantly clear that I don't think Castro hitting third is somehow critically damaging his approach or setting him up for failure in the long run; my reasons for not wanting him hitting third rest primarily in that I don't think he profiles ideally as a #3 hitter and the Cubs are, despite how good he is, selling themselves short if they want to try and shoehorn him in to that role. My concerns about how the traditional expectations of a #3 hitter might be playing to the more detrimental aspects of his approach at the plate are effectively just window dressing; they're not the main reasons I don't want him hitting there, but they are a reason down the spectrum. Now, I'm not saying this is a sure thing; I could easily be completely wrong and hitting #3 has absolutely nothing with some of the things we're seeing so far this year. Ultimately it's just another reason for me to toss on the heap of reasons why I'd rather see him hitting #2 or even leading off. Yes, this. He's trying to be a run producer instead of maximizing the possibility of getting on base. I don't think it's hurting his development at all, just repressing some of his OBP potential for the moment because he's pressing a bit.
  18. Hitting it to that part of the park makes me feel better about his approach. Although it is Suppan out there so who knows.
  19. What the [expletive]? By tormenting, I mean pointing out the stupid [expletive] he says with equally stupid nonsensical [expletive]. It's amusing, but after his 3rd reply, I'm bored with it.
  20. Yes, this I can agree with you on. Much of anything else, not so much. Damn even my baseball stuff? Things I choose to edit out for no reason? You have a way of writing that makes my head hurt. The minor league stuff is okay when it's not completely out of left field. N&G tormenting you doesn't help either, but you have to learn to not poke a bear with a stick at some point.
  21. Yes, this I can agree with you on. Much of anything else, not so much.
  22. .... and if frogs just had wings, they wouldn't bump their little butts on the ground !!! Hey, at least mine isn't in fantasy land!
  23. Now if they'd just given Castro the night off and had Barney at SS and somebody with less range at 2nd, that play never happens.
  24. I see everybody is amped up for this game. :?
