    Fred Couples and his constant back trouble comes to mind. He had a shot at being an all time great if that hadn't greatly hampered him.

    Wasn't he on a lot of shitty teams that didn't win many games? I mean, wins back then obviously meant you were a really good pitcher.

    Wells was never highly regarded (IIRC) and was clearly pitching over his head. No, he was actually decent but got hurt and was never the same. Never great, but a solid back end guy who lost some velocity after the injury and demonstrated how thin the line between success and failure is in MLB.

    He was an injury guy too. I think he had bad ankles and was unlikely to be 100% again, which is why SD gave him up for Edmonds.

    Has there been any player anyone can think of that had good pedigree, put up minor league and major league struggling stats like Vitters and the light just clicked turning him into a starter or even good player? I know he is what he probably is and hes not necessarily young but he's also not necessarily for sure too old to improve. Is there anybody we can compare Vitters too that can give us any sort of hope. I know if possible its a 1 in 1000 chance of probably happening but still. I dont know why I even care but I guess I used to like Vitters a lot as a prospect around 08 or 09 ? Ryan Ludwick? Dont believe he made his ML debut until he was 29. That was about the only name that came to mind, but his struggles were much more related to injury than being bad at baseball.

    While I get the sentiment, there are definitely lots of people who really do hate him. And they are terrible human beings. I think the implication here is that they aren't actually people.

    Why offer him a contract? They saw a way to use information obtained to try to get the best possible draft results. They did knowing they had a handshake agreement with Aiken. I'm somewhere in the middle here. I kind of understand the Astros point of view in trying to minimize their risk after the abnormality was discovered. You planned on getting 2 pitchers for $8MM, but now you have doubts about the durability of one of them, so rather than just take a blind chance, you try to hedge your bets by getting him to sign for less and pick up an additional high upside arm as insurance in Marshall. On the other hand, what's the point of making the "official" offer at 40% of the max when you're making an unofficial offer of $5MM at the same time? That's the part I don't really understand. I also think it would be a great idea to allow the teams to pull in maybe a half dozen to ten guys for medical evals pre-draft like they allow a certain number in the NFL draft.

    Any particular reason for thinking they like Bell so much? I'm keeping Alshon for my 9th round pick (ridiculous value there) and can either keep Jamaal Charles for my first rounder or Bell for my 11th rounder. As for the original question, I'd be pretty tempted to go with Harvin because I'm just not confident in anybody coming off an ACL and I thing Patterson is going to have pretty inconsistent numbers.

    One hesitation and Bonifacio beats it out... nothing wrong with that play. The problem in the inning was our best hitting striking out with the bases loaded. It is much dumber to rely on a mistake by an opposing major leaguer in order to have success than having a good hitter not make an out. The problem with your theory here is that Bonifacio isn't really a good hitter, at least not outside the month of April this year.

    Lack of confidence in the guy calling the plays is the biggest reason for me to vote that way.

    That's the thing though, people aren't expecting him to have much success right away because of pitch recognition issues and it will most likely take him a bit to adapt. I wouldn't be surprised if he spent most or all of next year in AA unless the pitch recognition switch suddenly and magically flips on for him.

    Wow, definitely surprised by the Almora move. Edit: And I say Javy and Soler are up in mid August as long as Soler continues to hit well in Iowa.

    No, there are people saying that while he does have a smaller than normal UCL, according to people who are experts (Dr. James Andrews specifically), there's nothing indicating that it makes him a higher risk for blowing out his elbow and he'll still get a very large signing bonus.

    Baez could pretty easily struggle for 500 PAs to fully adjust to MLB pitchers. It could take 1000 for all we know, if 'caring' about winning in 2015 is the top priority, Baez should be the one traded considering his floor and the other options. Sacrificing a year of team control for the difference in "Javy MLB PA 201-700" and "Javy MLB PA 1-500" is a really, really bad idea. What in his adjustment phase at every single level leads yo to believe it will take 500 or 1,000 PAs to adjust? If getting the adjustment out of the way now leads to him hitting well right off the bat next spring so we don't start out losing 2 out of every 3 games like the start of this year and stay in contention because of it, yeah, it's completely worth it.

    He's not hurt and doctors who know what they're talking about have said as much. He's not at any higher risk of blowing out his elbow than any other 18 year old flame thrower. He'll get his money, and a lot of it.
