    You know, I was actually thinking about that the other day. There are some similarities between the two situations. A lackadaisical manager, a fairly young team, Juan Pierre leading off, a capable 2nd baseman, D. Lee, and the potential for a whole lot of pitching (if and when it gets healthy). Not that it is probable or even remotely likely, but it gives you a little something positive to think about. Unfortunately, there isn't a potential ML ready superstar at AAA.

    Couldn't agree more. And if a player can't handle a little criticism, how is he going to respond in a high pressure game situation. If a guy can't take it, I don't want him on my team.

    I think he is being given a pass for several reasons. 1-He doesn't make a ton of money. 2-This is really the 1st time as a Cub he has had an extended cold streak (I think). 3-He's not a guy who has ever been accused of not hustling or working hard. All things other guys getting critcized don't have going for them. He's the kind of player most fans on this board would like to have in a Cub uniform, save the occasional diarrhea of the mouth.

    This guy isn't on the fire Baker tomorrow bandwgn? I don't know what his problem is, especially after the good questions he would ask a prospective manger, but he should be on the fire Baker YESTERDAY bandwgn.

    I like the term Boers and Bernstein use. Whena team is this horrible and actually amusing to watch, they call them "fun-bad". It's really fairly amusing.

    pull the plug on hill? who do you suggest to take his spot? he's certainly outpitched guzman. and for all the fawning people do over marshall, it ain't like he's setting the world on fire either. hill is the least of the cubs' problems right now. I think he meant pull the plug on the team. i.e. Firesale and play the young guys.

    He's still the hitting coach for most of the veterans. Clines is the hitting coach for most of the younger players, I believe. Really? I didn't know that. And I'm simultaneously stunned and outraged. And incontinent. Matthews proved his infinitesimal worth already. Why contnue to let him instruct hitters. The Cubs are so bad they're making you urinate on yourself? :shock: Really, that's just beyond ridiculous, something has to be done immediately.

    Here's how: Dusty is an enabling, excuse-making, buffoon of a manager and has no idea what the heck he's doing in the dugout. No to harp on things, but he literally cost the Cubs a chance to go extra inning yesterday with his ridiculous bunt calls.

    This is an effect most often seen in basketball teams because one player can have so much more of an effect. The remaining players up their level of play for a short time but run out of gas after a few weeks, maybe a month. With the Cubs, the pitching held them in there for a couple of weeks with the offense getting an occasional timely hit. Now the pitching is crap, there is no hitting and you get what we're seeing. When Lee comes back, you'll most likely see a couple of week surge and then the fall back to reality. This team wasn't good enough to begin with and to expect them to sustain the pace they were on without Lee, Wood, and Prior and the leadership those guys provide is just false hope. I'll get off my soapbox now.

    I don't think any of them want to be out there any more. Yesterday's loss may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. Hopefully today's pathetic display will be the one that breaks Dusty's.

    Or at least Murray or Sucliffe. They should let Len and Bob start drinking after the Cubs fall behind by 5 runs. Why should they wait that long, it's just a matter of time before it happens anyway. Let 'em have fun from the get go.

    Well, when the bullpen is this overused in a stretch like this, I guess you can't expect a whole lot different results. Has there been more than 2 games in this stretch where the starter has gone 7 full innings?

    Future trivia question? After Green's AB, I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes.

    And may I ask why you think of that? Solid but not spectacular Minor League numbers, where he was slightly old for his leagues. Very low K rates(and corresponding K/BB ratio) at the big league level, and nothing completely great with opposing batting lines. He gets a ton of groundballs, but it seems to me his ceiling is that of a Jon Lieber, which seems to fall short of the hype he was receiving in the thread thus far. Didn't Jon Lieber start to have star like numbers before he blew out his elbow? You could certainly do a lot worse than a Lieber like ceiling for a run of the mill guy like Jones and another player, be it Guzman or someone else.

    Yes, there could be a silver lining. ...yeah right! Dusty didn't give up the 3-run homer. We should be booing Dempster. Yeha, dempster gave up the HR, but when was the last time he pitched. That would be Dusty's fault. It's also Dusty's fault for bunting Pierre to 2nd w/Piazza catching. Just dumb, dumb and a whole lot more dumb. The game would at least be tied at this point if not for DUMB.

    It is however Dusty's fault that his highest OBP guy was hitting 8th today. Just one of many dumb decisions he makes on a regular basis.

    That's not the point. It may not have made a difference today, but on an everyday basis, it will cost you a ton of runs because you have the pitcher and not an RBI guy hitting behind your highest OBP guy. It's the kind of dumb thing that Dusty seems to do on a regular basis with no rhyme or reason that makes most of us insane.

    Don't they have a pretty solid near-ready guy at AAA? Edit:Brad Eldred?

    It could be argued that the Cubs would actually win in that senario. Actually, the fans would win in that case because all of the players would have to be replaced. At this point, I would consider that a good thing (minus those on the DL, of course).
