  1. Hooray for news that has absolutely nothing to do with anything. It's a fun fact. [-X
  2. Lou Piniella gave $2000 to Bush/Cheney in 2004: http://herndon1.sdrdc.com/cgi-bin/fecimg/?24990263189
  3. I don't have his phone number, but this is his home address: 1005 TARAY DE AVILA TAMPA, FL 33613-1045
  4. theriot the last 28 days: .370/.452/.480/.932 yeah, that's a guy you want bunting. why not bunt with lee and ramirez in similar situations, whille you're at it? As I said before, different situations for different management. No, I wouldn't bunt with Lee or Ramirez. Would I for Theriot in the right sitation (to get Lee, Ramirez and Fukudome possibly runners in scoring position when playing for 1 run to extend a possible weather delay) - yes? Theriot sucks, he still can't hit, sample size....."yeah, tha'ts a guy you want bunting." So, now he's good then? Which one is it?
  5. And for anyone with a BP subscription, here's an article on bunting in close and late situations: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=2869
  6. it's not going to happen. marquis will finish the season as a starter. Yeah, his numbers look a lot like Steve Trachsel's, and we traded for him last year. [shudder]
  7. No, that is why sacrifice bunts that aren't executed well are stupid. no, bunting with your #2 hitter is stupid. or, having a #2 hitter who you'd rather bunt with in that situation is stupid. That makes no sense. Bunting with your #2 hitter - essentially trying to put 2 runners in scoring position for your 2 best hitters is stupid knowing full well this game may be called very soon? http://www.tangotiger.net/RE9902.html Slightly more runs expected with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs than runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. plus that assumes that the bunt is executed properly. there's a much better chance of a failed bunt that results in a double play, pop out or fielder's choice than there is of a throw into the stands or theriot beating the ball to first. so actually the decision to bunt is going to cost you even more than that very small amount. Do those numbers factor in when you're essentially playing for 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th type situation to win (5th here because of the rain), your 2 best hitters coming up, Shawn Estes being the opposing pitcher, etc? All situations in every game played between 1999 and 2002. You could look up particular situations at Baseball Reference if you like.

  9. Not to mention that Theriot has always hit lefties MUCH better than righties.
  10. If Soriano were a team player he'd bunt Marquis over.
  11. Someone needs to punch Lou in the face.
  12. Haren isn't left-handed, so I'm not sure why I'm seeing Reed Johnson on my TV.
  13. Fontenot has been swinging a pretty hot stick this season. And the Cubs only have about 2 other bench players. It sure will be nice to go to 13 pitchers when Eyre is back.
  14. Check out Lieber's career platoon splits: http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/psplit.cgi?n1=liebejo01&year=00 What David said is right. It's dumb to start him against a team whose best hitters are left-handed.
  15. I wouldn't want Hill, Lilly, or Marshall to face the Brewers. They hammer left-handed pitching. Throwing Dempster or Lieber against the Reds is almost as bad, though. The Reds can't hit left-handed pitching at all, but they do pretty well against righties. I'm all for using the starters creatively and looking for the best matchups, and it can be done without guys going 9 days without pitching.
  16. can he do that? If Theriot can then I guess it is physically possible. Theriot can will the ball over the fence.
  17. Bobby Bonds had a higher OPS as a 5 hitter than he did as a 1.
  18. Ridiculous. Hill is a frigging major-league pitcher. He should be able to throw strikes after skipping a start. There's plenty of evidence that shorter periods in between starts are beneficial for starting pitchers.
  19. Torn ACL = out for the year.
