  1. I agree...though I think it would be cool if the Wings/Hawks brought them out once a year for a game. Are the Wings doing the same thing? I like your idea btw. I dont know...I usually just traverse through a couple of Wings boards, dont read the local newspapers that much. If they are it hasnt been a posted topic. The Wings dont currently use a third jersey either. I dont remember them ever having one. If they do its been a long time since it has been used.

  3. I agree. I've been on other teams boards and those teams fans have similar complaints then Cyno has with refs. So I agree, the NHL refs are without a doubt the worst refs is major sports, and I wish Betteman wouold get on the ball, and improve the quality of refs. NBA, College Basketball, College Football NFL refs and MLB Umps are bad as well. Yes, but NHL refs are by far the worst in Major Sports. i don't see how you could reasonably conclude this. then again, you're you. The only other pro sport that I watch is Baseball. From a completely subjective and non fact based point of view, I think NHL officiating is not as good as MLB. Funny that you say this, cause one of the reasons that I find NHL officiating bad is that it seems subjective and not consistent.
  4. NHL refereeing is notoriously bad. It is the non-objective way that you complain about the officiating. It is bad for everyone.
  5. i think ovechkin is probably the most "exciting" player, but datsyuk is probably a better all-around player. datsyuk isn't marketed because he isn't particularly marketable. he's not talkative or a good quote -- and he's russian -- so he doesn't get press. it's a shame, but as you say, it happens in every sport. Datsyuk just reminds me of the Bill James/Rickey Henderson quote. if you could split him into 2 players you still might get 2 all stars out of it. for somebody who puts up points like he does, he plays phenomenal in his own zone. I have wondered how Holland and the Wings European scouting team rates players. They have been hugely successful with Euro players. A common attribute that they seem to have is that they are hard workers. Datsyuk combines great skill with hard work.
  6. the game between the Caps and the Pens was very good. I watched that one instead of the Hawks. It was carried on Yahoo. I think the Crosby stuff is over-hyped, but that kind of stuff is done in every sport. Sadly what it does is create casual Crosby fans instead of NHL fans. Magnum...I dont know if Datsyuk is the best player in the NHL. He is very dominate and I wonder why he doesnt get marketed more. No matter what you think of him he probably is the most exciting player to watch in hockey and usually makes at least one top ten play every game. You would think the NHL would be putting him in the spotlight a little more.
  7. I am glad the Wings won tonight. I dont think there is any team I dislike more than the Ducks. Winning goal was questionable though.
  8. Bruce I am glad to hear that you take time and reflect on this issue. I really do hope that all HOF voters do the same. I also have a couple of questions about your votes. I obviously dont agree with you on all of them but I really wanted to hear your thoughts on these questions. 1. Why no Alan Trammell? I think it has been asked already, but he is a very good candidate. 2. You sight World Championships as part of you reason for including Jack Morris. I have heard from others that is one of the reasons that Santo doesnt make it. The Red Sox never won a title during Rice's career and I think only made 1 WS during his prime(he was hurt and didnt play that postseason either). I guess my question is if Rice is a border line candidate, what other aspects of his career did you use to vote for him?
  9. I'm not sure to what degree I agree with him, though he's probably referring somewhat rightfully to the general opinion that Hansbrough and Stephen Curry are the generally agreed-upon two-man race. Blake Griffin Damn it, you're right. I knew I missed one. It doesn't matter anyways, Psycho T is winning this again. They outta have an asterick for the studs who were screwed out of this award by the media's love for Pscho T. Michael Beasley not winning last year is just awesome. Yeah you were hands down better than the kid were going to give it to, but oh well. Dont worry, in 10 yrs when Beasley is still a good NBA player, only Jay Bilas is going to remember that N Carolina's radio color guy was National Player of the year in 2008.
  10. Illinois has been on probation 3 times to my knowledge, twice for football (late 80's, 2004ish) and once for basketball (mid-90s). You can fault Bob Knight (err, I mean Coach Knight) for a lot of things, but running a clean program was always priority #1. Kelvin Sampson, however, is in himself a dirty program. they also had a huge scandal in the 60s that put both FB and BB on probation. I am not trying to validate Indiana, just pointing out that Illinois has had a pretty shaky history and has no room to trash other programs.
  11. while talking to an Illinois fan, I had to hear how dirty, rotten of a program Indiana is. Anyway, I am sure that I have read somewhere that Illinois has been put on probation more than any other school in NCAA history. So I tried googling this and could find no history of these types of things. Am I wrong about this and does someone know where I could find a history of schools on probation.
  12. For various reasons I think all All-Star games suck. If MLB didnt bring so many players and try to get them all in, it would be ok. NBA, NHL, and NFL dont even resemble an actual game. I actually enjoy college fb all-star games more than any of these. Probably because the rules may be simplified, but the players are usually giving a good effort to improve draft position.
  13. That may be true. I don't know how the rest of the roster is filled in after the fan voting. Campbell is 4th in the league in scoring by defenseman with 28 points. Keith has 23. Campbell is a +7, and Keith, as I said before, is a +24. Both deserve to be there. We should be focusing on Toews for taking Keith's spot. +/- is kind of like RBIs in baseball. Not really a good stat to show how good an individual player is, more of a reflection on the team as a whole. Also, a reflection on the matchups that certain coaches pick. If there is only 6 d-men on the all-star team, I dont think both Keith and Campbell should be in. I could probably make a better case for excluding them both.
  14. I think the reason that Keith didnt make it is because the Hawks fans stuffed the ballot boxes with the wrong defenseman. The NHL chose the names that would appear on the ballot. If Keith was put on their instead of Campbell, he'd be the one starting. I guess I should follow the all-star game process a little more. Personally I think it is an awful game and really dont care who makes it. So how does the ballot work? Only one d-man per team on the ballot? Keith has been a good d-man for several years and certainly should be included on any kind of credible ballot. Ok I looked up the actual ballot and now care even less about the All-star process. Why is the ballot so limited? and who makes the decision on who gets on the ballot? edit...also if Hawks fan didnt stuff the box with an undeserving starter(Campbell), than Keith may have made the game. So my initial remark still stands.
  15. I think the reason that Keith didnt make it is because the Hawks fans stuffed the ballot boxes with the wrong defenseman.
  16. I go back and forth with Hendry a lot as a GM. Overall he has been pretty successful if you measure the teams record with past GMs. However this is measuring him with a low bar. Also similar to Brian Cashmen, is his apparent success more of a matter of having a larger checkbook or is it because he is truly a good GM. I tend to think the larger checkbook has more to do with it.
  17. I think Crosby has to get a suspension for what he did last night. I think for his own safety at some point the NHL has to suspend him. He also needs to be told that playing dirty is not the same as being tough. also the Penguins announcers from the Youtube clip obviously didnt watch the same fight I did. What Crosby did was not standing up. It was attacking someone while he was trying to win a face-off.
  18. I think he only has one year left on his deal. I really think his career is over. I have no great argument for this, except I just dont see him as a player who will get himself into shape to play.
  19. I dont know what you are talking about with officiating? As for Salary Cap, the Wings have had the best player development system in hockey for 20 years. Most of the money they spent pre-cap was for retaining their own players, who had earned it by being winners. mostly cynosure. the RedWings have a wonderful combo of free agency and player development. when the time ran out for them to spend ~$15-$20M on goalie, they fell back on zetterberg, datsyuk, etc. no organization has done a better job better job of developing cheap euro talent than the red wings. I think it starts with leadership. I think Lidstrom really gets those Euro players to play well in the Wings system. Lidstrom played with the likes of Yzerman, Larionov and Fetisov, 3 other great leaders. Zetterburg and Datsyuk are picking it up now. Guys like Franzen, Samuelsson, Kornwall, Filpula really respond and give a great effort. I also think that is a reason that Hossa wanted to play there. One thing that was said in the broadcast today that I agree with, is that the Wings best players are the hardest workers. That is something that has been a constant over the last 15 years.

  21. Like I said... I think we might even have overdraft fees, that's how broke we are. Trade Khabibulin now that he has value...I know its a gamble going with Huet, but I dont think you are going to win the cup as the team sits today. Plus isnt this Khabibulans last year under contract. Probably not going to resign him anyway.
  22. Maybe moving Eager up to the 2nd line would help. I think players like Franzen and Cleary really add a lot to the Wings on their top lines. I really think picking up someone like Bill Guerin would really help the Hawks this year. Dont know how it would work with their cap situation though.
  23. You know how you would have not been robbed. Beating an Oregon St. team that managed to score 3 points against Pitt. Another year, another no championship for you. Soooooooooo sad. Oregon State is a good, consistent program though. And they beat Pitt without the Rodgers brothers (Quizz Rodgers was Pac 10 player of the year). I don't see what's such an embarrassment about losing to them. Well, Penn State beat Oregon State 45-14. And USC beat Ohio State 35-3. Citing the results of those two games means nothing because they cancel each other out. agreed. the transitive property doesn't apply to sports I think it is obvious that USC is head and shoulders above everyone in both conferences. If you took the Pac 10 vs the Big 10 2-10, it would be close or advantage Big Ten.
  24. Maybe its just the ones that I know personally. Though most PSU fans do look down at OSU as a renegade program, when their own program has been pretty shady the last couple of years.
  25. Agreed, I think USC is just as good as Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida. Even though I always cheer for Big Ten teams. I am kind of glad that USC is drubbing PSU. 1st reason, help create BCS controversy. 2nd reason, help PSU fans get over their we are superior to the rest of the Big Ten attitudes, though their team has done nothing to have this attitude in the entire time they have been in the Big Ten. LOL. What PSU fans think that? Most of us start the season assuming we're going to be 8-4 with a trip to the Alamo Bowl. We lost to Michigan 10 straight times. Who the hell are you talking about? THEE Ohio State University fans are the insufferable douchebags As a fan of none of PSU, Mich, or OSU, I find all 3 fan bases to be pretty insufferable. Yet Michigan and OSU as teams have been consistently good. PSU is probably on the same level as Iowa and Wisconsin as a team. It just seems that most of their fans havent realized it yet. edit: maybe not you in particular but some others that I know.
