  1. He was also BA's #1 GM candidate last March. Count me as in.
  2. Who knows how accurate any of that is, but I like just about everything in there. Especially the part regarding Ricketts "eating money" in trades.
  3. I think we should start a third thread about trading Zambrano. I do think a team like the Yankees, Diamondbacks, or Rockies could overpay for Z. I could see the Tigers or White Sox overpaying if things get tight in that division. The biggest thing in the Cubs favor is that there are several races becoming more an more competitive, with less teams completely out of it with value to trade. Let's hope there are several 3 team races at the deadline. Tigers, Indians, White Sox Texas, Seattle, LA Angels New York, Boston, Tampa Arizona, SF, Colorado That's not even counting Wild Card teams. I cannot imagine the Cubs would ever trade Z to the Reds, Brewers or Cards. Z in a Cards uni would make me vomit.
  4. Agreed. I almost commented on the rest of your post, but then I would be sucked into the Pujols discussion again and I won't allow that to happen today. 8-)
  5. Are we not in rebuild mode? If not, then why not? Maybe it signals that everyone is being evaluated for jobs next year. I love Z, and I personally think he is much more than a #4 starter, but if the Cubs could get some value for him they have to do it. We have the 2nd worst record in baseball. There are plenty of holes to fill on this team and unfortunately you have to trade value to get value. And trading Z creates another hole which is why Im in the dont trade Z camp. Again, it depends on what the Cubs would get back. If it were a good deal, I say they have to do it. Losing Z does create a hole, but that production at that salary? If the right deal with a contender is there, get some value back and use that salary on something else. I just don't think Z being paid $18M next year is what a terrible team should do. I like it ONLY if they get a good deal.

  7. That's weird. The crappier the results have gotten the less you dislike Hendry? I like what he's done as far as getting rid of older veterans and rebuilding the farm system. The Wilken hire was genius for/from an idiot. While I generally think Hendry is a little too old school to be a GM nowadays, I do think he's setting this team up very nicely for post-2011. The farm system is on the up and up, the club is seeing some contracts go away, there's a young stud player at the ML level, there's "glue" veterans who'll still be around, there's a young pitcher in the rotation so that Z and Dempster doesn't go straight to Cashner/McNutt/whoever without a bridge player.... Also, my gut says that Hendry gives us a good chance to sign one of these 1B. It's probably just a kook theory, especially in this day and age where every theory is like that, but I do find myself believing it. You had me until "glue".
  8. He was there all last year and they sucked. He was here in the early part of this season and they sucked. His glueability and leadership skills are not what is missing. It's the lack of good baseball players that hurt this team. No, I can't agree with that either. It has definitely been one problem, but certainly not the biggest problem. Players who can actually play baseball help.
  9. Kind of a fluff article, but I agree with just about everything he said. Among them:
  10. Crazy talk. And people are looking WAY too much into this. Of course the Ricketts are going to stand behind Hendry and Quade publicly right now when pressed. Yep. The moment he even hints at questioning Quade and Hendry, it means that they are officially toast. Hell, they probably (hopefully) are anyway, but I doubt Ricketts wants this to play out in the press.
  11. Yeah, but when he is your best hitter in the outfield, I think that speaks volumes. Our starting outfield has 30 combined RBIs this season. I don't mind Reed, it's just a reflection of how banged up we are from an already weak club.
  12. Dewitt, Montanez and Reed Effing Johnson in the outfield. Holy crap are we bad!
  13. Entirely possible that there's a ton of speculation there, but I don't think that it says that the Sox/Cubs series turned on the light bulb in Rickett's head. We were all embarassed that week as we have been all year. That series is as good an example as any of how pathetic the Cubs are, and he is a Boston writer. That writer might be a hack, but there might be some truth to the article. There has to be something to it one would think.
  14. I have hoped that this all along was Rickett's CEO style. I have to believe that he is in fact not a dumb person, but wanted a bit of time to evaluate what he had in place. I am quite sure that he sees the empty seats. If there is any silver lining in this trainwreck of a season, it may be that this is the year the Cubs started to run like a real organization. There are a few signs that could lead one to believe that a organizational change is happening. In a few months we may actually be excited to see an actual philosophy. Maybe I am drinking the Kool Aid, but I still have some faith in Ricketts. 15. First time I've used the "Foe" button here. Now if everyone stops quoting him we'll be fine.
  16. While on the topic, it is time again to remember the best rant by a Cubs manager ever: NSFW!!
  17. No. Don Baylor came after Riggleman, beginning a string of overhyped overpaid name managers (although I was a fan of his when they went looking). Essian was in the early 90's. You're right. He was after Zim. I know he was managing Iowa then the Cubs after a midseason firing. Wow, doesn't history repeat itself!
  18. I was just trying to think of some of the worst Cubs managers in my lifetime. Remember Jim Essian, with that stupid tip of the cap whenever a player hit a homerun? I believe he followed Riggleman. http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-snc4/50412_35758852498_4019003_n.jpg
  19. Who would be out there to manage this team next year if (when) Quade is shown the door? Larry Bowa? Ryno? (Please no) Bobby V? Torre? Brenly? Why do I think Larry Bowa could be the guy they would pick?
  20. They could just outlaw the SEC. Then maybe the Big Ten might win a title.
  21. http://allindstrom.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/baseball-luda-200x200.jpg I'd need to see Ludacris's splits before I'd consider that trade. Thank you, thank you, thank you for that. I almost pissed my pants.
  22. I think there are several teams that would take a 1 year rental on a front line pitcher during a great season, then hope to sign him after the season. If the Yankees and Boston stay this close all year you never know.
  23. I don't know if the Cubs would, but that would have to be very interesting for both teams.
  24. I am definitely not trying to suggest we should trade Z. I just hope this doesn't spur some bad blood played out publicly to where the Cubs have to trade him for bad value.
