    I would be very sad to see Z go, but at the same time if the deal were good I would do it. I really think there would be a good market for him. I just really hope that if it happens it doesn't end badly.

    I think Z might be gone regardless of what he does or doesn't say. If this is what makes it happen, then Hendry can kiss my ass. Z is the only one making any sense, because it's certainly not Quade or Hendry. And what type of message does this send the team? Show some fire and demand some accountability and we'll ship you out of here? For those who regularly read the Chicago media, is Sullivan the type that would speculate like that without facts?

    On the second point, you're exactly right. I stand corrected. But Lopez? On the first point, this is why I say that you stand the catcher up, put up four fingers and walk him. He was itching for anything he could put his bat on and he found something a little too close. He made a great play, but that's why you intentionally walk Albert Pujols.

    We disagree on that point, but even more than that is how he did it. He pitches to Pujols on Saturday, an unintentional intentional walk. IMO, if you're going to walk him, then walk him. Don't play around with that BS or you might get burned, as the Cubs did. After the game, he publicly says he might have to rethink his strategy in that situation. Sunday after his closer fails to work Theriot correctly and blows the save the same situation arises with the same result. Pujols home run, Cards win. On top of that, he yanks Marmol there for Lopez to pitch to him?!? Just dumb, dumb baseball.

    Very true, but you have to draw a line at some point. Stupid baseball is stupid baseball, regardless of the record. If Quade ever wants to hold players accountable, he has to practice what he preaches. Manage smart, play smart. Nothing good comes from bad baseball, day after day.

    I will be curious to see what Quade says when asked about this. This team is does not field a good lineup, true, but game after game this team makes the kind of decisions which lose games. I have to believe Z was calling out everybody, from the top down to Marmol. I'm sure ESPN will paint this as Z being Z, complete with a montage of his blowups. The problem is he's exactly right, in his message and how he delivered it. Somebody should be pissed.

    I agree with that. I would hate to lose Marmol but he might be our most valuable trading piece (besides Castro). I guess I should've clarified this as deadline deals. You wouldn't part with Soto? I like him too but I guess I would be ok with a good deal, say to maybe the Giants.

    Now that the club is 10 games under, I have to wonder who is off limits for a trade. My absolutey no: Castro Would have to be a really good trade: Marmol, Soto, Brett Jackson, McNutt, Cashner (would be selling too low but with high ceiling)

    Kerry deserved a no trade clause. That contract was friendly enough for the Cubs. Olnley essentially said that Kerry might be willing to go to a winner. I know he wants to be in Chicago but I have to wonder if that might change due to this train wreck.

    I just saw Buster Olnley say that if Kerry Wood were willing to waive his no trade clause, the Diamondbacks might be a destination. I'm in full sell mode at this point. What type of prospect would he garner?

    I guess I don't understand the grad transfer rule (i mean, why the sec would outlaw it). If a kid graduates and is sitting on the bench for your school, why not let him go play a 5th year somewhere else? he's given you the 4 years he committed to giving you and he earned his degree. you shouldn't control him anymore. I like the new restriction. I'm not sure exactly why the SEC ruled this way, but just maybe it was about the kids already on campus. Also it opens the door to some pretty loose definitions of student athlete. One example: Entering last season Ole Miss had a QB in waiting in Nathan Stanley, who went through spring practice and fall drills as the starter. Jeremiah Masoli, who had been dismissed from Oregon for disciplinary reasons, swoops in at the last minute and asks if he can attend Ole Miss to enroll in their Parks and Recreation program. He was cleared to play exactly one day before the season opener and quickly becomes the starting QB. According to the NCAA, “the waiver exists to provide relief to student-athletes who transfer for academic reasons to pursue graduate studies, not to avoid disciplinary measures at the previous university.” Perhaps this was to avoid the whole mess in the future. Reason #573 why Houston Nutt is a shifty slimeball.

    This time in 2002, Cubs were 22-35 with a -49 run differential, en route to a 67-95 finish, and Sammy's numbers that year were at the top end of what we can reasonably hope for from Pujols. Baseball boners that year were pretty scarce. Then the very next year they were 5 outs from the World Series. I guess this should give me hope.

    I understand the points made, but I just would not have pitched to him. But even then, don't unintentionally intentionally walk him. If you're going to walk him, just put him on.

    Agreed. However, my point is that I though the managerial decision stunk. The ideas can coexist. And I understand it was a tough break. My point is that you take that completely out of play and put four fingers in the air.

    Serious question... What did you think of the intentional walks Barry Bonds got a few years back when he was on that roid induced tear? Several of those were in similar situations.

    Pitching to the best hitter in baseball needing a home run or pitch to someone who has been one of the best hitters in baseball this year needing a double to win. Does walking Pujols really increase the Cubs chances of getting out of the inning? Yes, absolutely it does. You can't let Pujols beat you there.

    He's been less than great but the problem is Jim Hendry. Always has been, always will be. No argument from me on that. There's a serious lack of talent, true. But what talent the Cubs do have can't run bases, can't work a count, can't hit a cut off man, can't situational hit, and sure as hell can't stay away from the best hitter in baseball when your object is to put him on base. With Quade, I worry about the young guys becoming stupid baseball players. And that would make them untalented AND stupid. Rant over.

    It was a great swing on a good pitch, granted. But this is why you intentionally pass him. Don't even fool around with it. It's a no-brainer to me. The decisions made from Quade this season amaze me.
