  1. A four pitch inning with three hard-hit at-em balls. Not too often you see that.
  2. actually he's hitting .403 when putting the first pitch into play, so i'd say that swinging at the first pitch has made him a .300 hitter. I feel that occasionally the world needs a reminder that there are time when the first pitch is a very hittable pitch, but the batter just doesn't get good contact.
  3. So with a win we clinch not worst record in the NL? That's been clinched mathematically earlier this week. They just clinch not worse than the Nationals. Even now, for the Nationals to finish with a better record than the Cubs, they have to finish the year 34-0 while the Cubs finish the year 0-35. That would put them at 79-83, which wouldn't be the worst record in the NL. Not to nitpick, but 0-35 the rest of the way would put the Cubs at 78-84. ;) I mean to nitpick, but "them" refers to the Nats.
  4. I'm pretty sure at least Babe Ruth has done that. Probably plenty more in the early 1900's. Since the WWII era, though, possibly not.

  6. If the Cubs defeat the Nats today, the Nats will officially be unable to finish with a better record than the Cubs this year.
  7. I don't think it's that the Cubs are magically hitting well on the road and poorly at home, just as I don't think the Cubs were hitting magically well at home and poorly on the road earlier in the year. The Cubs are simply a solid hitting team that coincidentally had rough stretches on the road early and at home of late.
  8. Using Harden on short rest is never, ever a good idea. Let alone anyone else. So if we have Lilly, then Harden would have 4 days rest right? Yes, a 4-man rotation in the playoffs is what almost all teams do, except for the Arizona Diamondbacks back in 2001 or something.

  10. Say what you will about Shawn Estes, he pitched like garbage the rest of the year, when it also really counted.
  11. I would think Dunn would be about as close to a pure hitter as you could find these days since there's very little pitching or fielding in him.
  12. In my opinion, it's OK to start talking about magic numbers when the first team can be eliminated that day. So, next week sometime pending Washington and Seattle.
  13. If the Cubs somehow completely choke and miss the playoffs, I might just have to stop following sports altogether for a while.
  14. Henry Blanco has played a part in the Cubs success this year. I wouldn't put Theriot in the top 10 of the team MVP. I will not doubt he's been having a fine year by his standards, but he's one of the least productive offensive regulars on the team despite the sexy batting average Which isn't to say Theriot is hurting the team, either. He's just not helping as much as most of the rest of the lineup and rotation, which is a good problem for the Cubs to have.
  15. No team in the NL has had a +200 run differential in 10 years. In 1998 both the Braves and Astros did (In 2004, the Cardinals did have a +196 differential). In the AL, though...the Red Sox did it last year. The Mariners actually had a +300 differential in 2001.
  16. You, sir, know how to handle a high bar.
  17. Cardinals at less than 1% chance to win the division. Even worse than I had them a couple weeks ago when I was called a biased homer. Well...you are a biased homer. Even if you were right. :)
  18. I think it's amazing the turnaround Baker has brought in Cincy this year. At the beginning of the year, they looked to have a solid staff ace (Harang) with three young additions to the rotation that would make it dangerous (Cueto, Bailey, Volquez). On top of that, they had a power hitting lineup that rivaled anyone's (Dunn, Phillips, Griffey) with top young prospects ready to step in and provide even more offensive power (Votto, Bruce). In four short months, Harang is basically ruined, Volquez is showing signs of wearing down, Bailey's been jerked around, Bruce spent 3 months in the minors deferring to Corey Patterson, and Dunn and Griffey are gone. But the bullpen...that pen is one of the best in the NL, so mission accomplished.
  19. You dont think that Theriot has played a part in the Cubs success this year? Im not saying hes worthy of the award, but he is having a very good year. He has been the most consistent offensive performer on the best team in the NL this year. As for Berkman vs Pujols, Pujols might have better counting stats at this point, but Berkman is outperforming him. Creating more runs, winning more games, better in the clutch. I don't like doing this, but to reiterate my previous post: Pujols has him beat in everything that matters and some of what doesn't: HR, BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, EQA, WARP-1, WARP-2, WARP-3, better team. Berkman has the advantage in games played, hits, runs, 2B, rbi, and SB. Berkman also has the advantage in RC and WS, which are of course cumulative stats. Both Pujols and Berkman are close enough in all the statistics that either would have a decent argument in a statistical comparison. Of course, the MVP voters are really only concerned with AVG/HR/RBI and team wins.
  20. Yankees fans may have, but I don't consider it that big a deal. There are some years where any team from the other league is overmatched (and some times they still win, as in 2006).
  21. The question is, are you rooting against the Red Sox because they're a more dangerous potential World Series opponent for the Cubs, or simply because you're just sick of the Red Sox "Nation"?
  22. The 125 game start of 77-48 is equal to their best start in 39 years. The last time they started better than this was 1929, when they were 84-41 at this point in the season.
  23. See, now the thread has devolved into mob mentality. Clear difference.
  24. The foes list doesn't work as well if people keep quoting the posts.
  25. Ah, right. I even went and counted the 26-25 when he didn't start, and still missed the 2 game difference.
