  1. On a day where the wind is blowing straight out, a 4-run lead is nothing. For all the times the Cubs have come back from 2-3-4 run deficits early in the game, one would think that there would be occasions where the reverse would happen. Last I checked, though, the wind is still blowing out, and the Cubs are still the highest scoring team in the NL. Does that guarantee victory? Absolutely not. But it's not absurd.
  2. Without a doubt. Yes, how dare people expect to win a game against the worst team in baseball after leading 4-0. Ridiculous. How dare people expect Cub pitching to be perfect every time out, even against the worst team in baseball.
  3. Quick, name a better option vs. a lefty off the bench without burning the backup catcher.
  4. There's no reason we should lose even one game to these morons. 2 out of 3 in this series is not ok. Even the Nationals, the worst team in baseball, are winning more than one of every 3 games. Even the Cubs, the best team in baseball, are losing more than one of every 3 games. Expectations right now are unfairly high.
  5. Some people's expectations are waaaaaaaaay too high for this team right now, to the point where they are completely incapable of enjoying anything but a 10-0 blowout.
  6. hence, the WBC ETA: I mean World Baseball Classic, not Westboro Baptist Church Not sure I'd put it past the Westboro Baptist Church to jump on this cause. They could picket...I dunno, independent minor league games full of washed up ex-major leaguers?
  7. There are occasions when the first pitch thrown is a very hittable pitch. Agreed, thats why its weird to have such a low BABIP on first pitch hits. I'd wager a guess that this stretch is more of an anomalous blip than a trend. That they're still winning 80% of their games while being unlucky with BABIP and RISP just speaks to how good this team is, really.
  8. I'd go with most cost-efficient free-agent signing, sure. Certainly better than Soriano, Blanco, or pick-your-reliever.
  9. What's BABIP? I may have an idea but don't want to sound like an idiot. Which asking about it might make me sound like an idiot anyways. Batting average on balls in play. It generally mirror's a team's/player's line drive percentage plus a percentage.
  10. There are occasions when the first pitch thrown is a very hittable pitch.
  11. A four pitch inning with three hard-hit at-em balls. Not too often you see that.
  12. actually he's hitting .403 when putting the first pitch into play, so i'd say that swinging at the first pitch has made him a .300 hitter. I feel that occasionally the world needs a reminder that there are time when the first pitch is a very hittable pitch, but the batter just doesn't get good contact.
  13. So with a win we clinch not worst record in the NL? That's been clinched mathematically earlier this week. They just clinch not worse than the Nationals. Even now, for the Nationals to finish with a better record than the Cubs, they have to finish the year 34-0 while the Cubs finish the year 0-35. That would put them at 79-83, which wouldn't be the worst record in the NL. Not to nitpick, but 0-35 the rest of the way would put the Cubs at 78-84. ;) I mean to nitpick, but "them" refers to the Nats.
  14. I'm pretty sure at least Babe Ruth has done that. Probably plenty more in the early 1900's. Since the WWII era, though, possibly not.

  16. If the Cubs defeat the Nats today, the Nats will officially be unable to finish with a better record than the Cubs this year.
  17. I don't think it's that the Cubs are magically hitting well on the road and poorly at home, just as I don't think the Cubs were hitting magically well at home and poorly on the road earlier in the year. The Cubs are simply a solid hitting team that coincidentally had rough stretches on the road early and at home of late.
  18. Using Harden on short rest is never, ever a good idea. Let alone anyone else. So if we have Lilly, then Harden would have 4 days rest right? Yes, a 4-man rotation in the playoffs is what almost all teams do, except for the Arizona Diamondbacks back in 2001 or something.
  19. Using Harden on short rest is never, ever a good idea. Let alone anyone else.
  20. Say what you will about Shawn Estes, he pitched like garbage the rest of the year, when it also really counted.
  21. I would think Dunn would be about as close to a pure hitter as you could find these days since there's very little pitching or fielding in him.
  22. In my opinion, it's OK to start talking about magic numbers when the first team can be eliminated that day. So, next week sometime pending Washington and Seattle.
  23. If the Cubs somehow completely choke and miss the playoffs, I might just have to stop following sports altogether for a while.
  24. Henry Blanco has played a part in the Cubs success this year. I wouldn't put Theriot in the top 10 of the team MVP. I will not doubt he's been having a fine year by his standards, but he's one of the least productive offensive regulars on the team despite the sexy batting average Which isn't to say Theriot is hurting the team, either. He's just not helping as much as most of the rest of the lineup and rotation, which is a good problem for the Cubs to have.
