  1. No team in the NL has had a +200 run differential in 10 years. In 1998 both the Braves and Astros did (In 2004, the Cardinals did have a +196 differential). In the AL, though...the Red Sox did it last year. The Mariners actually had a +300 differential in 2001.
  2. You, sir, know how to handle a high bar.
  3. Cardinals at less than 1% chance to win the division. Even worse than I had them a couple weeks ago when I was called a biased homer. Well...you are a biased homer. Even if you were right. :)
  4. I think it's amazing the turnaround Baker has brought in Cincy this year. At the beginning of the year, they looked to have a solid staff ace (Harang) with three young additions to the rotation that would make it dangerous (Cueto, Bailey, Volquez). On top of that, they had a power hitting lineup that rivaled anyone's (Dunn, Phillips, Griffey) with top young prospects ready to step in and provide even more offensive power (Votto, Bruce). In four short months, Harang is basically ruined, Volquez is showing signs of wearing down, Bailey's been jerked around, Bruce spent 3 months in the minors deferring to Corey Patterson, and Dunn and Griffey are gone. But the bullpen...that pen is one of the best in the NL, so mission accomplished.
  5. You dont think that Theriot has played a part in the Cubs success this year? Im not saying hes worthy of the award, but he is having a very good year. He has been the most consistent offensive performer on the best team in the NL this year. As for Berkman vs Pujols, Pujols might have better counting stats at this point, but Berkman is outperforming him. Creating more runs, winning more games, better in the clutch. I don't like doing this, but to reiterate my previous post: Pujols has him beat in everything that matters and some of what doesn't: HR, BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, EQA, WARP-1, WARP-2, WARP-3, better team. Berkman has the advantage in games played, hits, runs, 2B, rbi, and SB. Berkman also has the advantage in RC and WS, which are of course cumulative stats. Both Pujols and Berkman are close enough in all the statistics that either would have a decent argument in a statistical comparison. Of course, the MVP voters are really only concerned with AVG/HR/RBI and team wins.
  6. Yankees fans may have, but I don't consider it that big a deal. There are some years where any team from the other league is overmatched (and some times they still win, as in 2006).
  7. The question is, are you rooting against the Red Sox because they're a more dangerous potential World Series opponent for the Cubs, or simply because you're just sick of the Red Sox "Nation"?
  8. The 125 game start of 77-48 is equal to their best start in 39 years. The last time they started better than this was 1929, when they were 84-41 at this point in the season.
  9. See, now the thread has devolved into mob mentality. Clear difference.
  10. The foes list doesn't work as well if people keep quoting the posts.
  11. Ah, right. I even went and counted the 26-25 when he didn't start, and still missed the 2 game difference.
  12. Lieber being on the postseason roster itself would be something bad. :)
  13. The Cubs have played 73 games with Soriano starting in LF, and 51 games without him. So, any stats that don't equal out to 73 with him and 51 without him are basically made up. According to Baseball Reference: When Soriano plays: 51-24 When he doesn't: 25-24 Yes, that's when he starts. I'm not sure how many games there were when he came in late in the game.
  14. The Cubs have played 73 games with Soriano starting in LF, and 51 games without him. So, any stats that don't equal out to 73 with him and 51 without him are basically made up.
  15. The Brewers have actually played a lot better since CC joined the team. They're only further back in the division because the Cubs have played even better.
  16. Reed Johnson has also played a mean LF. DeRosa's a bum out there, though. The Cubs are only 8-13 with him out there. Also, when Lee hasn't played 1B, the Cubs are 1-4.
  17. Did they show the last gymnastics events on TV yet (women's balance beam, men's highbar)? If not, they should at least be more fun to watch tonight.
  18. It's still possible that he's one of the top 5 players on his own team, though. Depends on how much you value Wood or Marmol. Zambrano, Dempster, Ramirez, Soto have all been fantastic this year.
  19. Going by statistics that attempt to equate pitching to offense to defense, the most valuable player for the Cubs has been: Win Shares: Zambrano with 17, followed closely by Ramirez and Soto with 16 Runs Created (which ignores pitchers batting): Dempster with 87 followed by Ramirez with 84 VORP: Dempster with 44.6, then Zambrano with 38.3, highest batter is Ramirez at 33.1 And this is just for the Cubs, not the whole league. Statistically, the MVP should be Pujols or Berkman.
  20. If you're limiting MVP voting to the best players on playoff contending teams, you're looking at Pujols, Braun, Utley, Wright, CC, Webb. If you're actually looking at the best player, Berkman or Pujols should win.
  21. Except if the Cubs won this year, there'd be 99 years between championships. OK, make it 100 wins for AVOIDING 100 years between championships. Actually, it'd be 100 years between championships, from 1908 to 2008. There are 99 years of drought, though.
  22. Ping is arguing that Dunn is taking hittable strikes early in the count in the name of patience, and that is detrimental to his productivity as a hitter. I'm not sure the point of arguing otherwise. Of course it's detrimental. Now as to the question of whether or not Dunn would actually change his approach and maintain solid contact were he to swing earlier in the count, that's largely conjecture.
  23. Getting ground balls is only good if you have a good IF defense behind him. Brandon Webb and Orlando Hudson are a prime example. Despite some of the comments on the range of the left side of our infield, Dempster's performance is certainly a point in Aram and Theriot's favor. Err...the Cubs defense is the most efficient in baseball. Theriot has limited range, but Ramirez is very good. DeRosa and Lee aren't too shabby either. Going forward, do you think it will remain that way? Our team isn't exactly young. Going forward over the next month? Of course. Over the next year? Most likely. Three years from now? Who knows? What does anything have to do with the defense going forward, though? The question was regarding the Cubs defense behind Dempster to this point, which has been fantastic.

    Golf

I played in a scramble a few weeks back. Our foursome finished 8 under for 18 holes. I had two shots count, both 50ish yard pitches. I love scramble golf.
  25. I never even mentioned Marquis as an option. He isn't one.
