  1. I think a "worst-case" scenario for the Cubs would be Phillies-Brewers-Dbacks in the playoffs, simply because I think those are the best three teams in the league after the Cubs. If, somehow, a combination of the Mets-Marlins-Dodgers-Cards made the playoffs, it would make the path to the World Series statistically easier. That said, I think the Cubs could and would beat a Webb-Haren-Johnson-Rain playoff rotation, as well as a Sabathia-Sheets-Parra-Sabathia-fast track to injury playoff rotation. Just as easily, though, the offense could go into one of those crazy post-ASB-like droughts, and lose to anybody. Gotta like the odds, though. So, I guess my "preference" would be the Cubs making the playoffs with the rotation set the way they want, and everyone healthy and producing at expected levels.
  2. It's a timing mechanism for him, just like any hitter that steps or taps their foot when they swing. It doesn't really help anything but timing, but trying to make the play without it, and he's useless.
  3. Jason Marquis creates angst, Alfonso Soriano takes it away.
  4. A guy like Dunn would be exactly what this team needs. A legit 40-HR guy to put in the middle of the lineup. Unless the Jim Edmonds rejuvenation serum holds up another year.
  5. Actually, LaTroy did that plenty in 2004. He was fantastic, as long as it wasn't in the 9th.
  6. We'll definitely re-sign him next year, probably try the platoon with Pie out again. He may not be Carlos Quentin or Josh Hamilton, but he was one hell of a pick up off the trash heap. He's maintaining his solid numbers against lefties, and that's good enough for me. I'd rather Fukudome gets moved to center for a platoon so that a big bat can be added as a corner OFer to slide into the #3 slot and Lee hits #2 or #5. It all depends on whats available and how much Mr. Cuban wants to spend. Personally, Id like the put all our free agency eggs in 1 basket this offseason and go after K-Rod, however, I dont think the Angels will let him go. He'll get a record shattering contract for a reliever for sure. That is seriously way beyond the last thing we should even consider doing. Yeah, that seems like a terrible idea. But if there's anything the Cubs need, it's a third closer.
  7. Just for kicks, after 32 games over .500, we go all the way back to the 1945 Cubs, who finished the year 98-56, or 42 games over. I really doubt this year's Cubs can top that.
  8. Probably 2004 sometime. Didn't an ESPN announcer say that the other day was the first time they had been 21 games over (or whatever it was at the time) since 1969? They ended the 1989 season 93-69, so up to 24 games over, it'll be 1989. 24 games was the high water mark for that season, though. Before that, in 1984 they were 90-58 at one point, so up to 32 games over. Beyond that....it's been a while (1969 high water mark was 83-51, 32 games over).
  9. Not often you get Soriano, Theriot, and Lee all out in an inning, and still give up 8 runs.
  10. Can't think of a way I'd rather respond to a 4-run inning than with an 8-run inning.
  11. Let's go, Soriano. Can't leave runs there in scoring position...
  12. Marquis could go a long way toward overcoming that last half inning by keeping this half inning going here.
  13. Although, rarely have I gone so quickly from a sense of excitement to disappointment when I got an alert of "Lee 3-run HR in 3rd".
  14. So, three straight fastballs to Lee...probably not a good plan.
  15. Earlier in the day, it appeared that NSBB lost its connection with its mySQL database (possible server down or moved?). As far as max user connections, I'm not sure if that's something Tim can set himself or if that's a constraint of the ISP of this site.
  16. I'm not sure how much that means in terms of Anson being the face of the Cub franchise, however. He played long before they were even known as the Cubs. This is why I'm much more apt to label Williams/Sandberg/Banks/Santo/Jenkins/Sosa as the face of the Cub franchise.
  17. I'd be in favor of moving to two leagues of four divisions of four teams each. The only thing that would be particularly important to preserve would be the truly classic "storied" rivalries of the Red Sox/Yankees, Cubs/Cards, A's/Angels, Indians/Tigers and Dodgers/Giants. Heck, bring back the Phillies/Pirates rivalry that was diminished when they split them into different divisions. AL East: Red Sox, Yankees, Orioles, Blue Jays AL West: A's, Angels, Mariners, Expansion Portland/Vegas AL North: Indians, Tigers, White Sox, Twins AL South: Rangers, Royals, Rays, Expansion Indy/Charlotte NL East: Phillies, Pirates, Mets, Nats NL North: Cubs, Cardinals, Reds, Brewers NL West: Dodgers, Giants, Rockies, Padres NL South: Braves, Marlins, Astros, D-Backs As long as we're aligning mostly according to geography instead of how good teams are right now, that would probably work just fine. If they feel the need to expand one team in each league (which they really shouldn't care, since prior to the last expansion, teams were added to the same league i.e. Marlins/Rockies), move a willing NL team to the AL, like the Astros to the AL South to fuel a rivalry with the Rangers or something.
  18. So, when they do the Cubs, who are your three Cub franchise players? Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Hack Wilson, Gabby Hartnett, Tinker-Evers-Chance, Sammy Sosa, Fergie Jenkins, Three-Finger Brown, quite a few names to choose from. Without too much thought, I'd probably go 1) Ernie Banks, 2) Ryne Sandberg 3) Ron Santo, but one of the pitchers likely deserves to be in there as well.
  19. cash That guy was involved in a lot of trades over the years.
  20. This seems amazing to me, considering this time period was also during the prime years of Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente and Hank Aaron.
  21. If you swing at the first pitch after a 4-pitch walk, it had better give a good result. That was not a good result.
  22. News flash: The Phillies also can not pitch.
  23. Yeah, Pujols is one of the better 1B defenders. Votto and Loney clearly have better range, but are much worse fielders. Pujols has about the same range as Lee. According to RZR, though, Lance Berkman has been the best defensive 1B in the majors this year.
