  1. Effectively, every win gains a game on half the league so a net half game gain on the league, and every loss loses a game on half the league so a net loss of half a game on the league. To be in the wild card conversation, they'll need to gain 4-5 games on the league as things stand, so the Cubs will have to play 8-10 games over .500 for a stretch to be in the playoff hunt. Alternatively, for the division, they just have to outplay 4 teams overall, so in a weak division, the potential is there to contend without being quite as good. In that sense, they need to gain on the Reds and Brewers now, so with them playing each other, the Cubs only gain by winning their own game.
  2. Benetti is the best broadcaster the Sox have had since TV came out.
  3. In fairness, that makes him the White Sox second best position player. Only Luis Robert has a higher fWAR.
  4. Fun fact: If Cleveland wins today, there will be just 4 teams under .500 in the AL. Now, you may think that's because the AL is dominating the NL this year, but that isn't the case. The AL is 225-241 in interleague play this year. So, in fact, the NL is dominating the AL this year. So why are there so many AL teams over .500? Because 3 of the 4 AL teams below .500 are so far below .500 they're propping up the rest of the league. The Royals, A's and White Sox are a combined 112 games under .500. The AL plays those teams a lot more than the NL, so everyone in the AL looks good.
  5. Had the Sox broadcast on last night (we don't get Marquee and I'm in no hurry to order it a la carte), and Steve Stone was billing this matchup as "two of the league's premier pitchers"....which, in itself, is effectively a slider low and away. In fairness, during the 8th inning he was also discussing how the Cubs were out of the race and almost certainly sellers, while the Sox were one good week away from turning this thing around and getting right back into the race.
  6. Cubs are quietly within 4.5 games of the Wild Card in the NL, as the Reds, Phillies, Marlins, Giants and Diamondbacks all have effectively the same record now. Cubs won't catch the Braves or Dodgers, but nobody else in the NL seems all that much better than the Cubs this season. Still, they'd need to get a few games clear of .500 before really being considered a playoff contender.
  7. Fortunately, nothing has changed in 20 years, so everything is exactly as it was then.
  8. Oh look, Pulisic is starting against Real Madrid and had a first half assist on a corner.
  9. The Cubs have also passed the Padres for 6th in the WC standings. Still trail the Reds, Giants, Dbacks, Phillies and Marlins, would need to jump into the top 3 to get the spot.
  10. Not really. The pen is middle of the road in MLB, 19th of 30 in WAR, 17th in ERA, 16th in FIP, and 15th in xFIP. Close losses have very little correlation with bullpen strength.
  11. Padres are in a similar boat as the Cubs, two teams that have just continued to lose lots of close games and win blowouts, which would suggest a regression to the mean at some point, but it's kind of running out of time for it to happen in a way that matters.
  12. Taillon has allowed 3 ER in his last 17 innings.
  13. Sadly, Sloth died of a cocaine overdose in 1989.
  14. The only question I have coming away from this is, did Roldan do enough here to ensure he never plays meaningful minutes again for the USMNT?
  15. Penalties again. Is there anyone on the field that can take them for the US? Ferreira and Mihailovic are gassed, Vazquez, Cowell, Busio are subbed out. This has all the makings of a Jordan Morris/Christian Roldan shank to lose it.
  16. The US back line has been atrocious all night, laziness from Yedlin led to the Panama goal. Fortunately Ferreira has been awake, and has had the only decent attacking chances for the US since about 30 seconds in.
  17. A giveaway so bad by Roldan there at the end of regulation that if Panama had converted, it should have been the last time he saw the field in a US jersey.
  18. Much better from the US in the 2nd half, most telling is that Panama has begun to resort to CONCACAFing.
  19. This first half is as bad as I've seen the USMNT play in a long time after the first 30 seconds
  20. Wild day at the Gold cup results in Guatemala coming from behind to win 3-2 and win group D. Had the game ended in a tie, Guadeloupe would have won the group and Guatemala would have been eliminated. Canada beat Cuba 4-2 to finish 2nd and will face the USMNT next. In group C, Costa Rica won 6-4 to finish 2nd in the group and will face Mexico next. Panama has clinched the top of the group and their game doesn't matter. QF matchups: US v Canada Mexico v Costa Rica Panama v Qatar Guatemala v Jamaica
  21. The bar for US strikers has been so low that "scores hat tricks against CONCACAF also-rans" is way, way at the top.
  22. Canada somehow draws both Guadeloupe and Guatemala in the easiest Gold Cup group, paving the way for a 2nd place finish in the group and a QF game against the US.
  23. Watching these Gold Cup games mostly because I'm oddly curious who the 4th best CONCACAF team is right now (USA, Mexico and Canada seem to have separated themselves as the top 3 at this point). Costa Rica looks like the 4th best team in their Gold Cup group. Whenever they aren't playing at home, they're awful. Jamaica looked interesting against the US B team, but just won their first game in a year Wednesday. Honduras doesn't look like a finalist for WC26 qualifying (which, remember, will not include any of USA/MEX/CAN) El Salvador just lost to Martinique I guess Panama looks okay, but they routinely toss up a stinker against an inferior opponent.
  24. Nashville hockey journalist went around Nashville yesterday talking to random people on the street about the draft, and I think this fan Kyle from Chicago has some good things to say:
  25. 6 it is then. Just repeat it against T&T and they'll win the group, facing the 2nd place team in Canada's group in the knockout (though, Canada drew the worst team in their group, so the 2nd place team could be Canada).
