  1. Steele gave up 3 ER over 5 1/3 innings against the best offense in baseball. Saturday was a bullpen day, there really wasn't a starter. Friday, Hendricks had one bad inning.
  2. As we all expected coming into the weekend, the Cubs gain ground on every NL playoff contender with their series win over the Braves.
  3. At least in contrast to the previous games against the Netherlands and Portugal, the USWNT was the dominant team in the game, just couldn't finish. Desperately needed Swanson out there. Shame, but Rapinoe and Morgan did as much to help the USWNT this World Cup as Carli Lloyed did from the booth.
  4. One goal over the last 300 minutes of field play. What is this, the USMNT?
  5. Cubs' win probability chart during the game: There was no point after the bottom of the first inning where it went below 75%.
  6. Side effect of all this winning lately: The Cubs have now caught the Diamondbacks and are within 1 game of the Marlins and 1.5 back of the Reds in the Wild Card race.
  7. Beating up on bad teams and teams with horrible starting pitching for 3 weeks was fun, but the Braves aren’t in the same league with the Cubs. I had a feeling we were going to humble them real quick. Our offense rakes 1-9 and when they really turn it on, my god they are unstoppable.
  8. Arizona, Arizona State and utah to the Big 12, leaving Stanford, Cal, Wazzu and Oregon State looking for friends.
  9. Cubs only scored 5 runs last night, got to shake things up in the offense.
  10. I for one am quietly awaiting a scenario where the Big Ten invites 4 more teams (let's say, Oregon, Washington, ND and Clemson just to round it all out to 20), then splits into two divisions, the Big Ten and the Pac Ten.
  11. Aggressive ignorance is the most annoying trait in online discussion.
  12. Per Fangraphs based on season to date stats, the Cubs now have 69% odds to make the playoffs, which is...nice.
  13. For me, this is the gravy series. Anything they get this weekend is gravy. Even if the worst case scenario happens, they get swept and CIN/MIL both sweep their opponents, the Cubs are still just 5.5 games out of first and no team left on the schedule is good.
  14. 42 of the Cubs 81 home dates are day games. Other teams have around 30 day games for their home dates.
  15. As bad as the USWNT has looked, I'd rater be them than Canada, Brazil or Germany right now, I guess. What a weird World Cup. Only CONMEBOL team to advance was Colombia. Three CAF teams advance (Nigeria, Morocco, South Africa). Jamaica advances but Canada does not.
  16. Hey, they definitely won an extremely weak division in 2021 (and were thus throttled by the Astros in the playoffs).
  17. Correct. Preseason projections had the Cubs as a borderline .500 team, which is why their playoff odds based on those projections is a bit more bearish (but still a real chance). Based on their current performance, the Cubs are the best team in the division, so the chances they make up 3 games on the Reds and Brewers right now is better than 50/50.
  18. The Cubs play 6 more games this season against teams with a better run differential than them (just the Braves). They've already played the Rays, Rangers and Dodgers and went 7-5 against them.
  19. Those are based on projections sourced by current 2023 performance, rather than preseason projections. Based on those, the Cubs are currently favorites for the division.
  20. An unfortunate side effect of digging themselves a 10 game hole early in the year is now they need to just plain pile on wins to catch the league, even if they have been one of the best teams in the league for 2 months now. Today isn't a must win, but there aren't many chances to directly affect the Reds trajectory, so taking advantage of one here is a bigger deal than, say, losing 2 of 3 to the Braves this weekend.
  21. To be fair, the best team in baseball always plays at Wrigley.
