  1. If you were Piniella would you put more of an emphasis on OBP for the 8 spot in the order with Soriano hitting lead-off compared to a traditional leadoff hitter? I don't know. Of course, I wouldn't have an OBP albatross in the lineup (Izturis). He can only hit 2nd or 8th. I'd rather have him hit 8th and screw up Soriano's RBI chances than to hit 2nd and screw up Lee and Ramirez. If Izturis can guarantee even a .320 OBP, I'd settle for him hitting 2nd and Derosa 8th. But at the .280-.300 crap he's been putting up....Izzy is a liability.
  2. Just because .328 is average for a leadoff hitter doesn't make it a good idea to get that out of that spot. As much as we complained about Dusty, I would say over 1/2 of ML managers would put a speedy basestealer #1 over a guy like Murton. Again, that doesn't make it a good idea. .340 should be the bottom of acceptability from a leadoff hitter's OBP.
  3. I think the Cubs are giving up too many future arms and the Braves aren't getting enough to help them right now. Also, would Tampa want Laroche? How about: Cubs get A Jones. Tampa gets Davies, Saltamalaccia, and Prior. Braves get Baldelli, E. Patterson, and Ohman. They were only giving up 4 of their top 10 prospects, and best 2 arms! I was thinking something with Prior, but was thinking he would have to go to the Braves.
  4. Also, .370 is a great OBP from the leadoff guy. .360 is ideal. .350 is respectable. .340 is the lowest a leadoff guy should be before he isn't an asset at that spot. For Soriano, I'm hoping for .360, expecting .340.
  5. For the record, the Nats got a .362 OBP out of the #2 spot last year. Felipe Lopez and Vidro hit got most of the ABs there and put up .363 and .410 OBPs respectively. They didn't get great production out of the #3 hole until they put Zimmerman there, but they had pretty good production out of Nick Johnson at cleanup. So, it's not like the guys who hit around Soriano were horrible.
  6. What about: Laroche, C. James, and Moore to TB. A Jones to Chicago Baldelli, Gallagher, E. Patterson, and Veal to Atlanta naw, Atlanta probably isn't getting enough in return.
  7. What makes you think that the Braves would want Beltre and his contract for Laroche? The Braves have tried Chipper away from 3B before, and they put him back. They want to move Laroche because they have an ML ready option right behind him (whose name escapes me right now). I think Laroche would be shopped to Pittsburgh, LAA, Tampa and others.
  8. The Angels are almost a mirror image of the Cubs, but have a better farm system, which will possibly save them. Team with money to spend, but not much of an idea on how to spend it.
  9. I'd hope so, but that just doesn't seem like Lovie's style. But then again, the pieces are in place. 1. Month of indifference 2. Reminder of last year 3. Vs. Green Bay 4. Lots of doubters (but maybe they want it this way) 5. Prime time It's hard for me to really put a finger on what Lovie's style is, with regards to this situation. Obviously last year they treated the last game like a preseason scrimmage. But that doesn't mean Lovie is stuck on such a plan. The one theme they've had down the stretch is extreme caution as it pertains to guys who are already banged up. If you're the least bit questionable, you're sitting. Lots of guys who sat probably would have played if there were more meaningful games. But I have to believe most of those guys are healthy now. I could see Lovie wanting the DC and OC to throw in a couple wrinkles to make the opposition think about what might be in store come Jan 13/14, but I'm guessing they'll keep the overall strategy rather plain. But that's really all you need to beat the crap out of Favre and the Packers. Being that he is a new coach, I think he's gonna try a lot of different things. Resting players last year didn't work, I think he will throw everybody out there for at least a half this game.
  10. I'd like Soriano to hit 2nd. There is a precedent for players of this caliber hitting #2. Sandberg hit 2 for the Cubs for most of his career, and was at least the 2nd best offensive player on all his teams. The Piniella Mariners hit Griffey #2 coming up and then did the same with Arod, with Griffey moving to 3rd. I'd love to have DeRosa able to leadoff (if he hits like he did last year, he can be a good leadoff guy). Derosa Soriano Lee Ramirez Murton/Barrett/Jones (really no preference on the order) Izturis
  11. Ok. What about a 20-6 halftime score and an opening drive TD by the Bears to start the 3rd quarter says that the Seahawks were in that game? I'm not disputing that the Bears aren't likely to beat Seattle as bad as 37-6 if they played again, but Seattle was never in that game, and has to be a longshot, at best at this point, to beat the Bears.
  12. I like partial points too. Straight up is easier to figure out though. I like the money idea, though.
  13. Obviously the NFC isn't as strong top to bottom, but I really dont' get how people can say the AFC is so much better. Bears absolutely demolished Buffalo, who until this week had playoff chances. Bears went into NY and beat a likely playoff team in the jets. Weak teams like the titans have a chance to make the playoffs. Yes in general the AFC has more strong teams, but it isn't like they are dominant over good NFC teams. and to say the Bengals woudl have breezed through the NFC to an easy first seed like that guy did is just a good example of the low standards for journalism - I'm suprised he didn't write about the QB controversy in Chicago, or how Tank Johnson trains dogs to kill The Bears are at least better than every team in the AFC from the Colts on down. Yes, they are a better team than the Patriots.
  14. New Orleans not only has the no.1 offense in the NFL, but the no.1 pass offense as well. The Bears are ranked ninth in the league in pass defense, and are getting progressively worse. Rattay threw for 250+ with 3td's and then Kitna threw for 280+ with 3td's in the Bears last two games. Our offense is ranked higher than your defense, and our defense is ranked higher than your offense. The cold weather is what scares the crap out of me. Hester was player corner in both of those games, which he won't be doing in the playoffs (please God). Having Vasher and Tillman both playing will be HUGE. You have to take into consideration that not only were the Bears missing a starting CB each of the last 3 weeks, but they are a good run D playing against a teams that can't run at all. Both were playing from behind also. Of course, the pass numbers were gonna be inconsistent the last few weeks.
  15. Why do you think that? They've already beaten the Eagles, who were 4-1 at the time and still had McNabb and they have also beaten the complete crap out of the Cowboys this season. The Saints got Dallas' worst game of the season. Granted, a lot of that was the Saints doing, but they won't play that poorly again (especially after the crap they laid last night). The Eagles game was close, despite the fact that the Saints got up 17-3. The Eagles became one-dimensional and were playing from behind all game.
  16. I can't see losing to Dallas. NO maybe...but really I think the NFC is the Bears' to lose. Philly is the team that worries me the most in the NFC. QB who can run. A WR in Stallworth who can make yards after the catch. Blitzing D that can give Rex some trouble. Very good defensive backfield with 2 probowl caliber players. I do think the Bears LB's can shutdown Philly's 2 biggest threats, LJ Smith and Westbrook. And I think they can run against the Eagles. But it's the team I fear most. I still think NO will be a 1-and-done team, especially since they will meet Dallas or Philly after the bye. If you pressure Romo, Dallas will lose.
  17. I don't see any irresponsibility here. Plenty of teasers are reported during the hot stove season. Besides, Carroll has sufficiently put himself on the line. If no trade occurs, or no report is later made that such a trade was close, Carroll has opened himself up to criticism (if not dismissal) for his flimsy reporting if he cannot defend his tease. This isn't much different than what is posted on websites like MLBtraderumors etc. Or someone saying, I have a funny joke to tell... If you have no intentions on mentioning who it might be, why bother unless you're making it up? Yeah, I don't understand how it can be 3 big names, but he doesn't mention any of the names. The Randy Johnson thing isn't even "close" but his name is mentioned. I don't see how anything could be close and not a single word has been leaked about a big name being traded.
  18. When's the last time Tillman missed a game? Who's starting at tackle?
  19. Sheets is just like Mary, when he's healthy, I think he's a number 1. That particular post confused me as well-I think he meant though that those 4 are not bad for being 4/5ths of a teams starting rotation, not that each of them are 4 or 5 starter quality. Yeah, Sheets healthy is a #1. Capuano is a legit 2. Bush was very unlucky and could easily be a great #3. He had a sub 1.14 WHIP (7th in baseball just behind Brandon Webb). Better K and walk rate than Webb, with the major difference being that Bush is much more of a fly ball pitcher. He was excellent at home this year and bad on the road. If he evens that out as I expect, he could easily have an ERA around the 4.0 mark. I don't like Suppan much, but the Brewers could have the best rotation in the NL if they sign a guy that can eat 200+ innings at a league average level.
  20. If you just look at the excess pitching, I still don't see the Yanks accepting that deal. Right now, you have the Sox rotation as Buehrle, Contreras, Vasquez, Garland and Floyd. If you're talking a Danks, Massett and Crede.....I don't think that's enough for the Yanks. *not to mention, I don't think ARod would waive the no-trade.
  21. I talked to him today.. haha.. well every day cuz we work together. He's mulling it over. I like the deal personally (either with Crawford or Dunn), but he hasn't really mapped out his keepers yet. He said he'll let you know soon. Well, just traded Dunn...so it would have to be Crawford.
  22. BTW, can somebody get Matt to respond to my trade. Talking to you, Don. :D
  23. Raw Dawgs trade cap casualty Adam Dunn to Quakers for Chad Tracy.
  24. IU beat Western Michigan tonight. Although, not a landmark victory, the Hoosiers are on the right track. -4 straight games with 11 or fewer turnovers, after averaging about 18 thru the first 6. They have outrebounded all but 1 of their opponents (tonight's game). They have held 1/2 the teams they've played under 60, and all under 70, an average of 59 points allowed per game. Sampson is starting to get the boys to play together. If the players from last year's tourney team can get consistent (Ratliff, Wilmont, Calloway), and 1 more big man can at least show up every game, IU can surprise in the Big Ten. Ohio St and Wisconsin are obviously the class of the conference, but hopefully they can come together enough to be in the Illinois and MSU tier.
  25. I actually like Cliff Floyd. But I like him more as an alternative to Jones than to Murton. I see Jones and Floyd as similar players, but with Floyd being much for of a OBP threat, something that the Cubs need...while Jones has more power. An OF of Murton-SorianoCF-Floyd is a slight upgrade from Murton-Jones-Soriano. Of course, you still need the RH compliment and a darn good 4th OF.
